Great video! I’m here from watching the film The Lighthouse (2019) filmed on B&W Kodak XX and custom lens filters to achieve the orthochromatic look. Great flick and insane cinematography.
I've completely fallen in love with Ortho over the year. I got my Ortho back from dr5film and I was absolutely blown away when David there developed it as a positive image. Got some really nice macro shots of produce cross-sections, such as tomatoes and carrots where all the details have just popped. Taking this film down to southern red-rock Utah has also been stunning.
Wasn't in the show bible but glad it made it into the series! I def wanna pop with O80. The bloom is sick, I love the shot at 6:10 - and overall really interesting grays, great shots dude!!
I really like Ortho 80 even if I did shoot my first roll with a red filter on that I forgot was there and everything was underexposed. But yeah it's very cool in Medium format and being able to load it into the developing tank under red light is awesome.
Oh my God I didn’t even think about that possibility! That might change everything!!!!!!! And damn that sucks about the red filter those filters can be really really tricky
Searching for this video was an interesting thing. I really like Ortho, as I told you on Instagram, I'm vibing much more with Tri-x atm, but, as soon as I'm done with my rolls I will give Ortho a try! Also, I'm digging the new setup!
Awesome I’m glad you like the new setup. I’m definitely going to be playing around but I like it. Yeah I love tri-x as well! But someday ortho will happen I know it :)
Hey Kaleb. Firstly, great to see you caught up with the folks and enjoyed your Route 66 foray with Jason. Great viewing by the way. I like the Ortho 80. The way you shot it. It was made for your compositions. Like you my "go to" is 400TX. Another is BwXX.
Thanks!!! It was such a fun fun time! I’m glad you dig the video and you know I also love me some BwXX …. That stuff is so so good. Thanks for all the love
I am a fan of ortho 80. It works a treat in my 35mm pinhole camera. Not being sensitive to red light also makes it easier to handle in the darkroom. Thanks for the video.
Your vids make my day 🥰. I don’t like Ortho 80, but largely because of price. The results are solid, and unique but it’s a bit steep 💵/roll. Love the subtle references too. Did you add in the birds chirping in Farley, or was that nat sound? Thanks 🙏 again 😊!
@@BadFlashes whaaat. The world is so small. Man. Really love your videos and glad I found you and Jason. Just ordered my first medium format! Getting the Mamiya 645!!
I've been sittin on a roll of this for awhile. Want to shoot some golden hour portraits for the reasons you liked the photos of your brother so much. I reckon they'll be so dreamy and epic. Making up for the loss of soft colors you'd have at golden hour with color film.
Thinking strongly about getting a roll of this in 620 for my DuoFlex and give the old girl a spin. I wonder if it might not be a good film for cyanotypes as well.
Overland Camera is like 20 min from my house! I know the owner through Northland Camera Club. Are you local to KC? I will try Ortho... good video... Back in the day I used to shoot a lot of Agfa 25 and at the other end of the scale... Kodak 2475 with it's grain the size of your fists... I'll be hitting the streets of KC soon with a Seagull twin lens... perhaps, with a fresh roll of Ortho.
Oh that’s awesome!!! Naw I’m not local anymore but all my family is :) That’s awesome you know the owner! I should try Agfa!! Give Ortho a try let me know!
i shoot that film stock quite a bit after just running a roll through my OM1 on a sunny beach day last year without knowing really anything about it. those were my favorite shots of the whole vacation. especially on portraits it makes the summer skin even darker and the white eyes pop out like crazy. i try to keep the pictures fairly dark overall though. the grain in 35mm ist much more noticeable imo, that's potentially no surprise though.
@@BadFlashes oh absolutely. as i understand you‘re suffering from a secere shortage of film cameras you should for sure consider it. 28mm f2 is such a beast on it. i get along better with rf focusing though.
I've been talking about how I love ortho 80 so much to everyone in my film circle, and they just kind of shrugged it off. Glad to see more people are shooting it now. I just hope it doesn't become the new HP5+
I used Ortho 80 recently for the first time also. I never experienced those blooming effects, but maybe that night be because I my images in a different environment. They were also on 4x5 which maybe also could have cause the film to react differently? Anyway, feel free to check the images out on my video.
I really like the feeling that you get in a lot of your photos... I'd love to see what you could do with Ektar at night. I think you would get some incredible shots with that
The price hike is a bit odd given it's not a new emulsion (just new in 35 and 120) and also an older style emulsion? But at the same time that cost gap isn't toooo bad for me given I develop my own BW. I'm finding for color my hidden pricey costs is the developing. I _can_ do it myself (I even use fancy Kodak Flexicolor chems) but the lab just still does it better. And if I'm shooting something important, good to have a well calibrated lab handle it. That's been where the cost of film really hurts - for me anyway.
Okay, I am back for another episode of commenting as I watch. here we go....Oh yes. Love Ortho Plus. Used a 35mm roll at Christmas last year in KC and one of my favorite black and whites to date. Def can't wait to shoot a roll through the 645. Oh, now we arrive at the photo store.. I just got a lens there a while back for my 645. It's a great little shop. JOES! a must-stop in KC for some BBQ. Wow, had no idea that the Ortho meant anything in the film name, I'm dumb. Thanks for that explanation here. I am just now putting this together that you're from KC/KS, which I should put together with the trips, Boulevard gear and love for tank 7. LOL Back to the film, I loved the film for how it dealt with the highlights, it's so good! I like those images of your bro in the barn as well. The light is so good! I loved ortho 80 for that same reason, it's got a different look to distinguish itself. Great video as always!
Hahah for the win! I can always count on some great commentary from you! Love it!!! I’m glad you dig ortho as well and yeah that shop was pretty cool! And yes…. Blvd Tank 7 definitely happed a ton! As for the bbq. I think slaps is a bit better but this was yum yum 🤤 Thanks again for all the love 🥰

Finally getting back to film after 20 years & been trying everything I can get my hands on…ortho 80 just moved up to the top of the list!

Aw thanks!!! Totally try it!!!! 🤩🥳
Thank you for sharing, I have bought this kind of films, but ever use it. Now, that lools much better. I love it!
Oh yeah go shoot it today!!!!!! :)
Haven’t shot ortho 80 yet, after watching this i definitely need to try it. PanF 50 is currently my favourite b&w film. Awesome video btw.
Thanks so glad you dig it!!!! PanF is great! love that one tooo

I'm eager to try the ortho especially since my local camera shop just received some! Speaking of bloomy film have you ever tried the fomapan line ?
I haven’t. But I think that’s my next venture. People seem to like it! :)
Just shot my first roll or Ortho Plus and I can hardly wait for it to dry so I can scan it!
Nice! 😊
Didn't know this existed :O
What does the red light do to black and white film?
You can use a red light when using ortho film Bc it’s not sensitive to the red light spectrum
Thinking strongly about getting a roll of this in 620 for my DuoFlex and give the old girl a spin.
I wonder if it might not be a good film for cyanotypes as well.
Oh I don’t know about that… but it’s great film
I’ve shot a couple of rolls in 35mm and I’m a big fan. Honestly though, for that price I’m going shoot PanF.
