I read it like this.. For my unconquerable soul, I thank. It is not out of depression but of courage. This for me is a poem of courage not of fear. Your interpretation of the first few lines contradict with the conclusion.

When clouds start forming in the sky, the shadows start forming on the surface of earth. So we can say that shadows are looming on the surface.
Similarly in this poem, the shades of horror (deep fear of the about to come pains and hardships) are looming on the poet, that is hovering over his mindset and trying to overwhelm him.
