  • A young girl is caught between friends.
ELEVEN is used with permission from Abigail Greenwood. Learn more at imdb.com/name/nm3441128.
Emily is an 11-year-old girl trying to navigate a social dilemma. She's caught between two friends: there's her friend Brooke, with her giggling group of cool girls. And then there is her friend Rebecca, whose status with the "in crowd" is tenuous and provisional at best -- or nonexistent at worst.
Director Abigail Greenwood and writer/producer Kate Prior's honest, emotionally engrossing drama looks at the social politics that rise up among young adolescents, just at the stage in life where children begin to individuate and form identities of their own.
Part of this psychological work is defining one's self socially, but when the politics of being a "cool kid" begin to bubble up, it often reveals aspects of a burgeoning self that may surprise and even disappoint ourselves. We may give lip service to the idea of "being yourself," but in the face of powerful peer pressure, authenticity is much harder to practice.
Greenwood's film captures this tension beautifully, rendering the story with wonderfully adroit performances, especially between the two leads, Sasha Dingle-Bell and Astrid Lewis. One character can navigate with the in-crowd, but the other doesn't, and while their connection is genuine, it suffers as a result of the social terrain the girls exist within.
Their story is captured in beautifully subtle camerawork, which carefully charts the unspoken struggles and fissures that begin to pull at the girls' friendship. The film floats along the girls' lives and often feels like a documentary. Combined with the tense but understated score, the film has the feel of wistful, melancholy memory, without being too nostalgic or heavy.
Bullying is a hot topic, but the short offers a well-crafted, beautifully observed take on the issue. With its careful build-up and intelligent writing, the story feels gentle at first, but the climax has the force of devastation. The final looks of betrayal may be rendered in silence, but their pain speaks louder than words.
By taking us into the emotional lives of young girls with respect, care and sensitivity, ELEVEN shows viewers how seemingly "innocent" practical jokes from one perspective can destroy the emergence sense of another's self and strength at such a perilous age. ELEVEN shows how this is both understandable and even "logical" when it comes to the social politics of this age -- as well as the terrible costs it enacts on both sides of the line.

I originally said that the final scene was missing something, but after giving it more thought, I changed my mind completely. It's subtle yet very telling. Emily refuses to acknowledge Rebecca's presence, making it clear that she's abandoning her, and everything between them changes from this moment on. You can feel that the decision will take its toll on both girls' lives.

To this day I always step in if I see a kid get picked on. And set all of them straight. I don't scream at them i just make them aware of the consequences of that behavior. They are just kids who are still learning how to be in this world. We have to teach them.

Don't let that keep you away from trying! When you're 80 it's exactly those kind of things you'll regret. You only have one life, only one try. Send your script to people, try to buy or rent a good camera, study some video editing, start a crowd funding project online or ask family and friends for small donations, invite potential actors and get them on the same page - as a good director you'll lead them to a good or at least acceptable performance... There's always a way to get started. Don't wait for ppl to knock on your door! Be the one who knocks! Start today!

Loved the cinematography, music and the acting. I know this makes me a terrible person, but most of the time I have a huge problem with child actors because they often overact their parts. What I saw here, however, was outstanding. The facial expressions of the lead actress perfectly portrayed how difficult it was for her character to deal with what she had done. She couldn't even look her friend in the eyes. The girl who was bullied also proved to be amazing, especially in the art class scene. You could feel her character's disappointment. Where do you find talented kids like that? I think I've made it clear that I like the film, but I kind of hoped for a more fulfilling closure. Obviously, I didn't expect a happy ending, but one or two additional scenes would go a long way for me.

This is one of those heart-wrenching stories that hits home for a lot of us, particularly those who were themselves bullied as children. It's a part of growing up, learning to deal with bullies and mean kids. We are a mean, violent species. It's a shame that Emily chose the dark path, though it was also the path of least resistance. Peer pressure is enormous at that age; we don't really develop independent thinking and sense of morality until much later, in our mid-to-late teens. We do feel sad, though, and sometimes we feel sorry for others. I think that growing up around pets, especially dogs, helps impart a sense of empathy. Anyway... aw... well done movie.

All throughout my childhood, and even when I was a teenager, I grew up like this.
My best friend would always choose a group over me. One time, I was in an abusive relationship with a friend, let's call her Emma ((not her real name)) I stopped talking to her, and that action alone has caused me to become isolated by my friend group.

    • @Rose_flower_fairy

Best friends don't choose others over you. She/he wasn't your best friend(. I also had friends that I thought were best, but I was the only one of us who thought so, whereas I wasn't considered a best friend by the other party. Ofcourse this caused me to get hurt too. It happens when you expect someone to be a certain way, when in reality they can't because they're not that type of person. When I look back I realize that there were some red flags at the beginning of the friendships that I had that I simply ignored because I really just wanted to be friends with someone.

It's so sad that school's like this for some people. Honestly, at my school, everyone is nice to each other. Nobody is outwardly rude. Sure, some people don't like others, but we never teased anyone or called them names. Especially not at 11! I'm 12. Maybe it's because we were all at our school from a young age when we were more accepting. And it doesn't help the fact that we're Canadian and there's a stereotype about Canadians being nice.
