As someone who owns a Corvette (C6), I was always puzzled by the lack of love for the C4, which I think has a sharp, clean-looking design and, as this video demonstrates, plenty of performance. What is amazing, however, is that if you look at the inflation-adjusted price, a new C8 has a lower list price than the C4 did. This says a lot about modern manufacturing efficiency. Oh, and I also have a BMW and as much as I like the M6, there is no way I would take that now-ancient grand tourer on a long tour. It might be worth four times what the C4 is but repair costs will be of a factor much higher.

@4:59, that's not torque in action, it's HP. Biggest misconception is that torque wins races... it doesn't. You want torque high in the rev range, which technically/always amounts to HP.
The 80's were a terrible time to be a car enthusiast. 1/4 mile times between 15-16 seconds were "impressive" for sports cars built in that era. Nowadays people yawn at 13 second cars. And the worst of it was that your AVERAGE 80's vehicle was EXCRUCIATINGLY slow. Many of them, if around today, would have to be floored all the time to keep pace with average 75mph highway traffic. On the other hand, I turned 16 in the 80's and this slow era might be why I'm still alive...

Kind of surprised you all found an M6 of that vintage still running 🙂. Let's reserve a future comparison test with that Hyundai...say in just ten years, oh heck, maybe just 5 years 😉
The guy that owned it was some type of race car driver mechanic dude. At one time you could not get comprehensive insurance on a Bmw 6-series. It is literally a hand made car. The owner lived in Colorado so no rust issues etc.
105 mph at elevation means its not losing anything because thats what they trap at sea level. The ECU is surely commanding a good amount of boost to accomplish that. Probably 20 psi gauge.
Yeah. Modern turbo cars have performance goals programmed and they'll change their tune/boost depending on factors like air temp and air density, they don't lose much actual driving performance at all.
Fun video! Those Elantra N's are quick! I saw a video earlier today where someone was in a police chase in some Elantra N variant and it appeared to have about double the acceleration of the vehicle pursuing it. I was like "That's a Hyundai!! " Those turobcharged engines are sweet, I have a 1.4T in my 2013 Chevy Cruze, the cars about the same weight as the Buick Regal I had before (with the semi-legendary 3800 V6). The 1.4 makes much more low end torque (my Regal would definitely not pull up a hill at like 1400RPM...), overall acceleration is about the same, and the aerodynamic work done on the Cruze for MPG also drastically increases the top speed, those crates'll do over 140MPH. So (like in the Hyundai Elantra N) a 2.0T that's likely tuned for performance rather than MPG? Yeah that explains that!

You need a dunk curve to see the peaks, and you need an optimised gear set to keep your RPMs between pktq and pkhp at all times.

My 2009 Cobalt SS turbo with a slipping clutch ran 14.01 at 106 I tore it down and realized it was only dripping off of maybe a quarter inch of the clutch due to a poor plywood
2 of my favorite kind of cars. 80s Corvettes and BMWs. Great video.
These sport car videos are top notch. I love watching these. you guys do such an entertaining job. It helps that i love corvettes....
Finally a channel racing real world classics. Keep it up, get more classics! Build this channel...I subscribed.
I actually love the showcasing of the c4. Wish you would have gotten a manual 89 or manual 96. It would have made for better testing
Also... please test the steerimg on some capacity
My teenage daughter and me went past a 635 a few months ago, and she who never liked cars said it looked cool to me lol. I love the BMW, and I would not mind the Corvette either.
That C4 still looks so good!!!
@4:59, that's not torque in action, it's HP. Biggest misconception is that torque wins races... it doesn't. You want torque high in the rev range, which technically/always amounts to HP.
Get a Grand National to test
That BMW engine looks gorgeous 😍
The 80's were a terrible time to be a car enthusiast. 1/4 mile times between 15-16 seconds were "impressive" for sports cars built in that era. Nowadays people yawn at 13 second cars. And the worst of it was that your AVERAGE 80's vehicle was EXCRUCIATINGLY slow. Many of them, if around today, would have to be floored all the time to keep pace with average 75mph highway traffic. On the other hand, I turned 16 in the 80's and this slow era might be why I'm still alive...
The 80’s did style great though. Bring back the T-tops! 😂
ABS actually doesn't make you stop faster.
True, it can increase stopping distances
@@noneyabizz8337 it only increases stopping distance in bad conditions. ABS vs non ABS in dry conditions stop the same distance. Don't take my word for it, Google it and do your own research.
@@jackc7943 google will tell you ABS stops further than proper threshold braking
Neat thing about these two cars is if you saw both in front of a $1M house, they look right at home.
Such classic cars.
Y’all should try a retro turbo car against the Hyundai, like the srt-4 neon, base prices was 20k 215 hp lol but 13sec in the 1/4 mile I think
I would love to see the Kia Stinger with all wheel drive and V6 twin turbo dropped into the mix.
i wanna see a 96 manual corvette do this
Now buy a Used Corvette (C6) or BMW for the price of a new Elantra N and then see the differences or factor the price of the Used C4 or a BMW (335i) and add some upgrades to bring it up to a closer price of a new Elantra N and see who would win.
If I was going to buy a C4 with a manual it would come with the 6 speed. The 6 speed came out on the 1989 Corvette.
As a recent purchaser of a C4, I was pleased to see it best the Beemer. Less so to see it eat the dust of a Hyundai...
there should be a test along windy (winding, curvy) roads.
You guys make some excellent content, a joy to watch on this very cold day.
Do the Elantra against the C5.
From what my mom says, bmw's actually lasted and weren't money pits like they are today.
E24 Group A 635csi used the M30 12V engine, not S38 or S88 24V engine.
What is funny is that bmw uses GM auto transmission in e46
And the corvette uses a 6 speed ZF transmission used by bmw
105 mph at elevation means its not losing anything because thats what they trap at sea level. The ECU is surely commanding a good amount of boost to accomplish that. Probably 20 psi gauge.
Really fun fellas! I’ll subscribe.
Love the 1/4 mile racing!!
I wish these cars were filmed at sea level. So we could get more comparable numbers.
Ofc the turbo Hyundai is going to win at an altitude.
Those turobcharged engines are sweet, I have a 1.4T in my 2013 Chevy Cruze, the cars about the same weight as the Buick Regal I had before (with the semi-legendary 3800 V6).
