This video goes over how pin and tumbler locks operate and explains how lock picking works. This video provides you with a strong overview on single pin picking (SPP), zipping, raking, and rocking.
All the tools you need is a lock, a tension wrench, and a lock pick.
Lock picks come in a variety of thicknesses, I suggest you get a short hook in 0.025" to start, it is what I use to open 95% of my locks.

I sat there and tried to open the lock but i can't seem to get a smooth motion of my pick. I think the tensioner is too wide and is in the way of my pick. I don't think I am holding my tongue right either.

I was watching different videos and they were explaining the 'how' but not the 'why' - I.e. as pressure is applied, there's one primary pin at a time providing friction and when you do these in order, you've cracked the lock.

now got to 4 seconds on a clear lock like that with a lower tension bar and a standard hook . too easy , going to upgrade , ordered the pin tray and doing the mods you show this weekend to make it a bit harder. . finaly opened the chinese bike lock too and a squire 660 4 lever. going to a car boot sale / swap meet this weekend to try and pick up old locks to play with.

Dude help me. i got a padlock. and its like im not even doing anything wrong but the shit jusg wont work. I tension, lightly. Then i individually start feeling every pin NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM BINDS. I always just hear 70 clicks per pin because i move the pick just to find out not even one of them set
@@HelpfulLockPicker Slowly! Haha. I've picked two more locks, but it's difficult! In a good way though. Developing the sensitivity to the pins is a bit of a challenge, but I've rake picked a few open. With time I'm sure I'll get better though.

HelpfulLockPicker By the way, I found it really easy to open the transparent practice lock using any tool in the kit. But when I attack real ones it takes me at least half an hour. Why is that?
AsiaCrasie Check out my video [112] The clear locks often come pinned in a way so that you do not need to pick all the pins but you can improve them.

Everyone is saying this is the best video for lockpicking so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I put the tension wrench in, and while constantly applying tension, I rake over the pins over and over and over and not even 1 ever sets. Then when I try single picking the pick is too large and always ends up pushing all the pins upwards instead of just 1 at a time. I know I didn’t get the wrong tool either because it came together in a set.

Just today I ordered a beginner lockpicking set from Covert Instruments and this video helped clear up some questions I had. One question I do have though which more has to do with the engineering of the lock, what causes one pin to bind and others do not?

I’m just starting off in lock-picking and I thank you for this excellent explanatory video... the best beginners video I’ve seen! However, there’s something I’m still not clear on... The concept of the ‘order’.
I’m successfully picking my see-through practice padlock and I can feel the shear-line clicks happening. My problem is understanding why there is an ‘order’. Does this mean they have to be accessed in that particular sequence?
Am I therefore opening the padlock purely by chance as I don’t acknowledge myself hitting the clicks in any particular order.
If not, then why the mention of a particular ‘order’?
Confused.
Appreciating advice/clarity on this.

Where I live the locks are mounted the other way around, so I can't feel the difference between a set pin, a binding pin, and an overset pin as I have no gravity to get it back out of its recession.
You can still feel it, it's just a different feeling. Learning locks oriented that was is a very attainable skill you just need to get used to it
Grrrrr! I want to open a padlocked field gate, all legal, practised on a lock with paper clip, wow was I impressed but then couldn't do it again.
So I bought some tools & a practice lock, impressed again.
Today, quick practise this morning.
Excellent 2 locks picked in a matter of seconds, I'm thinking of adding "Master Locksmith" to my letter heads!

Where did you get this lock from? I bought the clear lock like this one but there's no binding order, no security pins and just farting near it opens it
cjdelphi You can take the lock apart, turn the driver pins upside down, and add some shorter keypins so none sit at the shearline

Search on wish. Do you sell many types of clear locks like this one you practice with each one over and over. Changing through different ones as you go so you don't get into a set habit.
I prefer single pin picking but raking is just so easy for most standard locks that I have access to

Good afternoon! (SPP) Do I need to unlock the pins that are hard first and then the pins that are loose?
It is whichever one is binding. The harder binding pin sounds correct to go after first
Thanks for such a quality illustration/demonstration/explanation. I’m trying to understand some of the nuances of what’s happening with the SPP, when you’re talking about the clicks. Because sometimes you said “little click” and it didn’t seem like the pin set, like the first little click on 2. And, you said “nothing on 3” when it seemed to somehow already have been set, or you had just set it and it didn’t click. So you end up not feeling all the clicks but still they are all setting somehow. Do you have any videos that go into those details?

Is that practice lock particularly easy to pick? I haven't seen so many single attempt successes before.
I am practicing on a southord st-34. A supposedly basic acrylic practice lock. I can't get it open raking it, zipping it, or trying to SPP it. I suck though and just started.
I know its impossible for you to tell me what i'm doing wrong but do you know if this particular practice lock is more difficult? I am trying to pick it using a southord pxs-17 set.

From my experience, these clear locks are quite easy. What might be better because it is more realistic is to get a cutaway lock. Also, I recommend buying a Kwikset lock because you it has an open keyway, is easy to pick, and can be re-pinned. It takes a lot of time to start to understand what you are feeling and you just need to keep practice and let time do its thing.
I am struggling mightily with seemingly getting all the pins clear of the shear line and the lock turning a smidge but not being "unlocked". I assume that's related to the bit about binding/non-binding pins?
You could be oversetting or be caught on a security pin
Do you have an ignition lock picking video? Or even just a double sided pin tumbler?
I have picked double sided wafer locks which is pretty close to an ignition lock. Check out my video on how to pick a wafer lock. Picking an ignition is not a good idea as you don't want to break it or pick a lock which you don't own
How do you go about choosing the best tension tool for any given lock? I have a picking set and it has a kazzillion different tension tools. How do you select the correct one?
I try top of keyway first and go from there

Hey! Great video. I thought picking locks would be a fun thing to learn during quarantine. And I'm trying to do two hairpin lockpicking. One for tension and the other for the cylinders/actually unlocking it. I'm mostly confused on where and how to insert the tools into the lock. Could you help?

After maybe 4 hours of practice I am getting the hang of using a bogata and city rake on some cheaper locks, some I find easier to open left handed. SPP though...I cant seem to get the hang of. I opened one lock with it - but it just felt like a fluke. I haven't bothered with a "practice lock", just went to several hardware stores and bought a few different brands and varieties. I am finding it difficult to fit my standard hook into the keyway along with my tension tools, and when I do I find I just cannot set pins...it's harder than it looks.
It takes time and it feels like a guessing game and luck for quite some time. You are not alone :)
I would suggest getting some top of the keyway tensioners. They often allow for more room and better feedback for SPP
@@HelpfulLockPicker Thanks, after posting this comment last night I practiced a bit longer and most definately felt like I had got the hang of correct tension and city raking. less really seems like more, and I found I got more success with a more springy tensioner. I had modified one to begin with to be used in the top of the keyway and actually broke a couple of cylinders - so I was obviously being too rough. Would it be possible to create a 'master key' where the key is just one height at the end. The cuts could all be at a height tall enough to cause all the pins to be out of the core. Would that work?

What to does biding mean? And what exactly is it when you refer to tention? Also how do you distinguish between a proper click and moving up too fast? This is really difficult to learn 😂

I tried the single pin picking method at 4:19 and I couldn't hear any audible clicks whatsoever on the pins even when I went over a second time. Is it that I'm not using the tension wrench appropriately or could it just be the padlock itself?
Not every lock makes loud clicks.

I'm very curious about all the pins moving while you're single picking. Why don't the other pins get affected, as in you're trying to get number 4 to bind, but i see 1, 2 and 3 all moving at the same time. Don't they get moved out of position?
The shaft of the pick may be touching them
I still dont understand what binding is and why they have certain order for it, can you explain?

I can’t get mine open
To HelpfulockPicker How do you pick a euro evo lock. That has 6 tumblers, 2 anti drill pins and 8 bump resistant guard pins. The anti drill pins are at the front inside of the lock and the bump resistant guard pins have 4 pins on each side. Can you pick one of these locks
Terry Smith I would have to look at it in person to get a better idea. Sometimes those side pins are passive and do it effect lock picking at all.
Assuming if they were passive, the lock would pick like any other lock but it might be harder due to tighter tolerances
how much tension are you supposed to put on the turning bar?
It is something that is hard to give a number on. I would try using so much all the pins bind and the loosen up from there
@@HelpfulLockPicker I got 3 locks from the lockpick kit and found using 3-4 of the tools made it work and can even just get it done many times with succession with only 2 of them. If I try to make 1 of them work over the other, I have a hard time which is why I use the other one of the 2. The other 2 of the 4 work as good but not As easy. I haven't tried all the other ones.

@@HelpfulLockPicker Thanks. I'll check them out. By the way, yesterday I opened my 1st lock, a masterlock model 3 using a standard hook. I could feel Springy but had trouble feeling Binding and hearing the Set. But it was only my first attempt and hopefully I'll get better.

@@HelpfulLockPicker Thanks! It's already getting easier. The first day it took 38 minutes to open model-3 because it was all new. But the next day I opened it in seconds. Then I tried model-140 and opened it 2 times in seconds also. Honestly, they are opening more by accident than by skill but at least I know what I'm trying to learn and I'm starting to feel it better. Thanks again. Your videos are the most helpful I've seen.
I think your pins are set backwards. The driver pins are flat on both ends and should be on the top under the springs. The bottom pins have the sphere ends that help the key move in and out of the plug.
