In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Aryabhata, the first unmanned Earth satellite built by India. It was named after an Indian astronomer and mathematician of the 5th century CE. The satellite was assembled at Peenya, near Bangalore, and was launched from within the Soviet Union by a Russian-made rocket on April 19, 1975. The Aryabhata mission started under the leadership of UR Rao while Vikram Sarabhai was leading ISRO. Later Satish Dhawan took the reins of the mission after Sarabhai’s death. @lallantop: Prime minister Indiraji received the letter in April 1971. which she forwarded to Mr Vikram Sarabhai and then he summoned Professor U.R.Rao who was in Trivandrum then, to come to Delhi in may 1971. where the meeting was held. - "ref: India's rise as a space power written by Prof. U.R Rao.."
