What is "meme MC music"? I see your comment is about 4 months old so I am no longer officially the only person left in the world who had never heard of Elliott and his music until stumbling onto it one day (in June of 2019) and feeling as though I've been living in some bizarre parallel reality where ES did not exist. Someone included a track of his in their video and I was really taken by the song and clicked the link and from there I have been listening to his stuff ever since and still having the awesome pleasure of hearing tracks for the first time. It was probably within an hour of listening to his music that first day where I also learned he had died in 2003 - I had already been so taken with his music after an hour's worth of listening that I felt deeply saddened to know this exceptional artist was no longer here with us. I would honestly love to know what your thoughts have been since checking out his music - I don't want to assume but if this song got you started, it got even better for you from here - though of course this song is excellent and I love it. I had heard "Needle in the Hay" when I rented Royal Tennenbaum's back in 2002 but unfortunately that sing didn't do it for me enough to look into the artist, as I do with all soundtrack music that grabs me. I only saw Good Will Hunting once in the late 90s and honestly don't remember Miss Misery - likely because as with "Needle", it's one of my least favorites. Maybe I subconsciously just despise Hellyweird so much that I have an aversion to soundtrack songs now. My first ES song I heard last June that made me aware of him was "Can't Make a Sound".

Even when he was writing about drugs, or about sex, or whatever, he was also writing about all the things AROUND that thing, the feelings, the situations, the philosophies, the strange characters...it's interesting, cos there's a certain segment of Elliott fans who feel alienated by the mention of things like drugs because perhaps they can't relate to it, so they go out of their way to bend-interpret his lyrics so they can claim none of them are narcotic references (just as their are people who force seeing references when they're NOT there). I thought this was about a gay guy trying to convince a heterosexual man, who he is in love with, to be in a relationship with. This happened to me twice
It seems to me it is more about friends trying to tell him to live with what he has "anything is better than nothing" "though it might not be really living". Of course with the added chorus about how he will still be "pumping out the product". Then he talks about his life general and how he's "busy making something from nothing. Pictures of hope (and depression)" This seems more like a contemplation of his own life to me, but that is just my interpretation and I relate more to that.

He had the uncanny ability to make crippling depression and addiction sound like a happy pop song. “Pictures of hope, and depression”.
Man! His whole album told his whole story living in Organ. I'm glad I was never in a position he was in. You can hear how his addiction took him over
He was only an alcoholic then. He didn't do hard drugs until the Figure 8 tour in 2000. He was living in LA by then.
