Jeff Porcaro was great as usual in this tune and Skunk Baxter's guitar is off the charts good to me......Fabulous musicians.....vocals......I'm a huge SD fan.....
At 3.00 the level of confidence and groove that we can see with expression of your face when you don’t miss a single timing with this solid rythm is just pleasure
So cool! Teenage Jeff was driven by his parents to record this track (he wasn't yet old enough to drive) because Fagen and Becker needed more precision than they could get out of Jim Gordon (Known as the most precise player on the scene at the time), and they knew they could get it with Jeff. When he came to the barn they recorded it in, there was a noose hanging from the ceiling, and he stared at it and said something to the effect of "wow, so is that how you treat drummers who doesn't deliver?".
Haha! A very fitting intro to Jeff's time with Steely Dan. They always got what they wanted no matter how long it took and no matter how many drummers they needed to hire.
Tate, as a fellow Steely Dan tribute player, thanks for studying Jeff's playing on this one and NOT overplaying it, like so many drummers do. Excellent job! So simple, so perfect.
Great job Tate! You cover so many of my favorite songs and bands. This is my favorite song from Pretzel Logic and a great Jeff Porcaro track. Thank you and keep up the great covers, I find them insightful and expiring.
Thanks! The bands approach to this one was simply different during recent performances, hence Carlock staying true to his own sound and not necessarily playing the tune note for note. I have merely aurally transcribed Porcaro's part!

Masterfully done, mate. One of the best covers on TH-cam, as you perfectly captured Porcaro's style and feel. Thanks for the upload, and I think you inspired me to attempt the daunting task of learning this by ear. :)
Tremendous playing Tate - you totally nailed this one, and have definitely got yourself another subscriber ! I've been learning this song recently and I always want to follow more of the bass guitar notes with the bass drum - Jeff's bass drum seems so restrained on the verses that I feel Becker and Fagen must have told him to keep the bass drum part fairly empty. Anyhoo - great job !
Thanks Andy! Appreciate the kind words. As for Jeff's BD pattern, I hear it like this. Rather than playing the kick in unison with the riff that the guitar and bass play, he took a more minimalistic approach, playing it on 1 and the "&" of 3 (which is super cool as its jabs in between the riff). Very effective as it isn't overpowering and doesn't just replicate the rhythm off the riff.
@@tate_berkey Thanks for the info Tate, been an admirer of the 'K' series for some time, though saying that I've used Paiste for years, maybe time for a change lol. You have a great set-up. Stay safe & well.
