I recently went to a clinical psychologist to see if I have ADHD. I've only had one appointment so I haven't yet been diagnosed, but the doctor said I probably have it. And she also mentioned this syndrome, didn't explain much since we were out of time, but she'll test me for it too in our next appointment. So now I've been doing my research and it is mindblowing to me how much I relate to pretty much everything you're saying. I also had never heard of this, only now I realise that how I see words is not normal and that my *extreme* clumsiness may not be me being an idiot, but my brain just not processing stuff right. I still dont understand it but your video helped a lot!
My 13 year old son has been diagnosed with irlens today. Only by chance tbh. He’s struggled since he started school to read properly and Because he’s struggled he has developed anxiety and ocd. So in March he was given a therapist for mental health who recognised the symptoms of irlen and suggested testing him. We had to pay privately for the test but finding out he does have it makes so much sense! I also think I suffer with it too but want to get him sorted out first. Thank You for explaining it and how your life has improved since being diagnosed.
I’m so glad your son has found out! I do think that’s the thing though, not enough people know about it so people can’t recognise the symptoms! And things really do fall into place after. My anxiety around reading has almost completely gone away because I understand now that my brain just doesn’t work the way others does and that’s completely okay. I really hope your son starts to feel more comfortable around it now he has his diagnosis. And it does actually run in families so it is super common for parents and children to both have it. I’m so glad the video helped you and I wish the best for you and your son!!! xxx
Sarah-Louise Walden thank you for helping to raise awareness and I’m glad your diagnosis helped you! To know he can get extra time in exams is amazing as his slow speed reading text made his anxiety around exams and tests through the roof. Extra time would help him massively. He has been assessed by lots of professionals for dyslexia, adhd, auditory processing, and loads more and not one person mentioned irlens. So frustrating that he has struggled for an extra 4/5 years after those assessments. It most definitely needs to be much more well known!! X
Yeah, I completely understand how frustrating it can be. It's awful knowing how many others must go through it. So glad he's managed to get things in place to help him and I hope in time that you will as well!! xx
Thanks for your video! My dad was diagnosed this year and he explained it to me and I’m now going for testing! I graduated in graphic design without even knowing what I was experiencing wasn’t normal! If my dad didn’t go for testing I wouldn’t even know!! It’s crazy how little awareness there is out there... thank you again for being open and raising awareness xxx
It’s insane isn’t it??? Definitely needs talked about more just so people know it’s actually a thing! No bother chick, hope your testing goes well!! 💕 xxx
I went to the same uni as you and felt as if I had a 'learning disability' but I knew it wasn't dyslexia. I wish I found this video earlier and knew that they had someone there that is able to complete a free assessment as I've graduated now. This has been really helpful seeing someone my age come to this realisation!
Aw, I’m so sorry chick that you weren’t able to get that at uni. Have a look about though, there might be charities out there that might be able to help you out. But I’m so glad you found the video helpful, I think seeing someone else finding out what I did might have made me feel less nervous about my gut feeling being wrong. But thank you so much for commenting and watching! 💕
You actually have a lot of similar symptoms to me I get the rivers, the glare on overcast days and staying on the line. Currently at school we’re doing graphs and coordinates and it’s really a struggle for me thankfully my teacher is understanding
I’m so sorry this took me so long to rely! It’s really nice to hear from someone who has similar symptoms to me! I’m so glad you have a teacher who understands, it will make the world of difference!
i was diagnosed with irlens when i was 8 and used an overlay all the way up until secondary school where i was made fun of so i stopped using it and then struggled with basically all school work until year 10 where i started to use it again just out of desperation but through those 3 years, i did terrible on tests, was constantly falling downstairs and was just really struggling all because i didn’t want to be made fun of. I really wish people would just mind their own business when it comes to things like these so people with irlens, dyslexia etc dont have to struggle just to avoid being made fun of p.s. loved the video!! it’s nice to hear someone else explain exactly how i feel :)
Aw Bethan, I'm so so sorry you had to go through that. Honestly, it's heart breaking. I think people need to come to terms with that there are probably a lot more people than they think have issues with things like this, and it just needs to accepted that everyone needs to do what they have to in order to perform the best they can. I totally agree with you. I really hope things are better for you now and feel comfortable using your overlays! Thank you so much for watching and I'm so glad you enjoyed it xx
Thankyou for this video,I went to the options because I keept getting migraines and the words moves when I read but I thought it was normal, the coloured sheets are AMAZING and I can basically read again , it’s nice to know people go throw the same thing as me . Also sorry for my spelling xx
It’s definitely one of those things that I think nearly all of us who have been diagnosed, thought it was normal before they got diagnosed 😅I’m so glad you’ve got your diagnosis now though and can start using some resources to help you! x
I'm in my 30s, just heard about Irlen syndrome over the radio, learned my father shares the symptoms at 80. You are the first check online to see if it's real and not a local radio shenanigan to fill program. And Ja. I think I'm going to go have an appointment for a check this week :I you just mentioned several of the things I have that I always thought it's just because I didn't read as much as my brother did in our early childhood. Also makes so much sense now why I had trouble reading in my native language ._. the font from that textbook was so different from the English, Latin, or German ones.
Diagnosed but not followed up with medical professionals , drawing however does not affect me I find I need to focus extremely on things to concentrate
Just got diagnosed with irlen's syndrome and I have vivid red coloured glasses now (similar shade to your overlaps) this really helped me understand what it is :))
I’m 42 and only just realised this is what I have. Mine isn’t too severe and it didn’t seem to hold me back, but I mentioned words flashing at me and I find I need to squint to read text. Nobody picked it up either.
great video, I have Irlen syndrome and I wear Irlen filters. mine is a different colour to my overlay was as that was aqua, with my filters they have 9 colours in them. Am also an Irlen ambassador that I raise awareness for.
I'm looking forward to getting my glasses. I really hope that the light-induced migraines end, and that I can get to enjoying reading again. I now understand what I was fighting through in college and grad school. It's pretty crazy that I'm 40 with two Master's degrees and no one picked up on this. How much less stressful would school have been for me? Man that's annoying/emotional to think about. For sure, schools should be WAY more aware of learning disorders. I had no social life in school whatsoever. I was working that much harder than everyone else, to keep up. Thanks for sharing. :) It sure helps to hear someone else w/ the exact same problem. Wish I had someone to talk to who understands. My symptoms have gotten progressively worse in the last 20 years, but I thought it was normal. In the last year, I just couldn't take it anymore. I had one night where I had the normal terrible migraine, but this time accompanied by dull pain all over my body. I guess my body was having a full-on freak out :) I discovered irlen by searching my symptoms on a search engine. I've been complaining about it to various doctors and none of them knew what the issue was. :( But seriously, THANK YOU for helping people like us feel understood and less alone.
That’s heartbreaking to read and I’m so sorry you had to go through that, but I really get it. I was in my undergrad so not too bad, but for you to go through so many masters with no support is awful. I’m so glad you seem have found the answer for you! You’ll have to let me know whether the glasses help, I’ve got my fingers crossed that they stop the headaches for you! Thank you so much for commenting and sharing your story, it means a lot to me and I’m sure other people that see it! 💕
@@sarahlwalden Yeah it's been a couple months and my goodness everything is so much better. I haven't had a migraine since. Better late than never, I suppose. Cheers super lady! :)
Jennifer Owen it’s awful isn’t it! Going through so much of life and education thinking that it’s completely normal and then having that realisation that’s it not!
i failed my english mock exams last year. i somehow slipped the net too, i got diagnosed at 14 after my teachers and parents saw me hiding not to read in classes out loud and once i did i sounded robotic like. i now have got my assessment for extra time soon but after my diagnosis and we spoke to senco, they didn't want to give me anything! its only know since i got my glasses, that they wanna help me now aged 16?
I got diagnosed at uni so I am really not sure how to outside of that. I would maybe recommend having a look and seeing if there is any specialists in the UK, they might be doing online assessments with COVID and everything, or you could go to your GP with some information on this and say you think you might have it and they might be able to signpost you? I'm so sorry I'm not more of a help chick x
Do you by chance speak German? It might be a bit of a stretch but you have a very German accent und it seems like you hold back on some words as if to not say in German

I completely understand, things seem to click once you know about a possible diagnosis! I’m so glad it helped and best of luck in your diagnosis!

Hahah, no, I don’t unfortunately! It’s probably the Geordie accent you’re picking up on!
