Little tip for going 2-handed early, there's a ruined house on the far right in the first area that contains a lootable corpse, which always drops a 2-handed sword
I highly recommend to pick up and read all notes,the lore worth reading + it gives clues to secret quests and treasures. The story and detailed atmosphere of Cairn is why i love this game. And that guitar stoner-like music gets me every time.
Actually started a grim dawn playthrough yesterday cuz I've never played it for more than a couple hours but always liked the idea of purifier and I kept hearing you mention it. Had no idea there was a big update.
If you are playing a Purifier with Pistols then this Update gave you a huge buff. Grim Dawn is so good, i hope you manage to get further ebcause it gets better and better the further you get.
Funny thing is there is something unique about this game that the other arpgs just can’t get right, love the hybrid class builds on this game and love the music in this game. People complaining about the graphics are playing the game for the wrong reason, the gameplay makes up for it and the game still doesn’t look that bad and it’s a 8 year old game come February. Can’t wait to see the new expansion!
I was like you. Never finished it. Then I did and oh my, did I regret not playing earlier. The endgame is lovely. I'm finishing up Remnant 2 DLC and jumping full on in Grim Dawn again with a new character as well!
They work but there are combinations that are miles and miles better than some. So its still true until you try SR and crucible. Otherwise, every combination works.
I deleted all my save file info so I could start fresh without any baggage, can't wait. Probably gonna take it easy though until the expac comes out next year, already have 700+ hours in it and I don't wanna burn out
Constitution is the yellow bar over hp. If you take dmg and have constitution, you automatically use con to regen hp much faster. It goes back by interacting with meals in the wild.
I love the top-down ARPG genre. Played just about all of them. Even Diablo 4. It's good, IMO. Grim Dawn is my favorite of the whole genre. It's just the best. I'm so happy they're still working on it, too! Would love a sequel from Crate...
Hey Wander! A couple things, first off is that the semi transparent overlay on your health bari think is called "constitution" and is a limited health regen mechanic that recovers your health as long as that bar isn't empty (it recovers by leveling up, picking up rations and eating in town). As for Torchlight Infinite, unless something has changed since the start of open beta, it's actually pretty decent. The best way that I can put it is an attempt at making a less complex Path of Exile, so all classes have access to the same skills and skill trees, there are just class specific mechanics that benefit specific playstyles over others. It definitely feels like they're trying to figure out how to make it anti consumer, but it hasn't managed to go that route as yet, so it's worth checking out as a fan of the genre.
1.2 update is pretty good! Probably the biggest part of the this update would be that normal and elite now scale all the way to level 100. So now you can stay in the lower difficulties while going all the way. Another big change is the relic crafting overhaul, they reduced the number of other relics needed to craft higher tier relics in return the base material went up.
Whatever they changed, I was able to get a nearly complete character with a full trozan set before hitting level 100. This game just keeps getting better. Bosses guaranteeing an MI means that you can have a build online from the moment you kill a boss. The evade mechanic also means you don't have to wait for a movement rune and makes some mastery combinations feel much better. The increased iron bits mean you don't have to pick up every piece of loot just to fund your crafting and augments. Crate nailed it with this patch.
The only realy grindy thing is the faction points, but thankfully once you done it with 1 Character you can buy stuff to speed it up for every other Character. But yes its my favorite ARPG together with Diablo 2.
It's my favorite too. I'm playing Diablo 4, and while I do like it, I'm constantly reminded how Grim Dawn had secrets all over every map/area, and Really no other top down ARPG does this...Actually reward checking every corner and actually looking at the environment.
Nightblade and Oathtaker dual wield acid/poison is interesting in that you can either take a pair of immortal Nightblade blade swarms and/or Oathkeeper ethereal Guardians both class' pets scale off player damage so you never need to focus on pet stats. Something sweet about being dual wield Poison is that at level 20 you can put Vitriolic Gallstones on each of your trash weapons and click on each to buff your damage through the roof, the buffs stack! Shadow Strike is an amazing get to the next clump of trash movement skill you can link to the poison cloud devotion in the bottom left end of the devotion 'maze'. Also if you hold down shadow strike it will auto attack setting off the top line of passive upgrades while SS is on cool down. Look up Miss Meltycakes if you want a more hands holding build. Though for end game armor I like the Korvan Dunefiend set more
YES! Grim Dawn is THE best ARPG ever made IMO. Best itemization and farming ever...1060 hours in so far, and it's like. My comfort game, it's hard on Ultimate and you can still become a god in endgame, and it feels so good to struggle, and finally get to god status later on :)
I want to love it, but last epoch crafting is so much fun, skills are amazing, everything is so punchy. GD graphics and animations (and skill effects) are meh, but the devs experience, the itemization etc is god tier. I would love to have game that is best of two worlds.
I bought the game (and all DLCs) about a year ago when on a Steam sale because it looked like Diablo 2 to me and I just thought .............well, if this game is only HALF as good as Diablo 2 was then it's worth the sale price. I then played an hour and a bit. did the same with a new character class, did the same with another , then again but forgot about the game completely because I bought other games in the same sale. Then a month ago I decided to give this game a good crack... It took me at least 4 HRS on the SAME character to fully realise what a great game this is. Only when I reached the higher spell levels, only when I worked out what spells worked best with my playing style, what toggling abilities are (they changed this with the new patch so they instantly work) how devotion points work and again selecting the Zodiac clusters that suit your playing style. The game is truly massive and with the many character choices makes replayability value off the charts. I cant wait for the new expansion and this game is DEFINATLY in my all time favourites.
If you're looking for a fun start on Shaman that deals some decent area damage, you can dump all your points early on into Primal Strike and take the modifier skill that removes the cooldown. It's the aoe skill you're looking for, and even with the reduced damage, Primal Strike slaps. Then when the damage kinda peaks, you can respec all the points out, and put them in whatever sounds awesome. One thing is, even when it's set up that way, Lightning strike can't activate weapon proc skills like Feral Hunger or Upheaval. Also, you mentioned Forcewave. I think Forcewave can be done that way too, and I hear that can be pretty effective, but I've never tried it. However you can't respec your class masteries when they are chosen, so you're locked in on that character with Oathkeeper. Fortunately, if you're into spin-to-win builds, Oathkeeper gets Eye of Reckoning, and the modifier for it throws out hammers like a D2 hammerdin. As a bonus, they do lightning damage, so that's actually a good skill to synergize with the Shaman! I didn't know there was an update, so thank you for playing Grim Dawn! Oh and yes, if the idea of dual wielding explosive machine guns sounds like a good time to you, Purifier is an excellent class. That's my main!

It just works really well as a way to level up quick in the early game. Requires a two handed weapon, but what I found fun is that you can use it with melee or ranged two handers! If you want to get crazy, it's modifier gives it chain lightning on top of being an aoe. It's insane.

Looking at it now, blizzard screwed over this genre however, this game has brought the genre back to life. The predecessor of Grim Dawn is Titan Quest and thats the game I play most in my life. Days and days and days. Because even for that long time, I played it for years now I still haven't collected many of the sets and I see new items dropping even today, after so many years of playing it. Thats the thing that make me huge fan of that game! Grim down is great too, but somehow I like better Titan Quest.

not really useless, its useful if your potion is on cd and thats pretty much it. Pre 1.2 you always had red pots no matter what pretty much bc they were so common so them just being free now saves inventory bloat.
Constitution is my favorite mechanic in GD and I wish more games had it. I think potions have always been a little too strong though, you'd get so many of them that they were functionally infinite beyond Act 1 and the healing they give you is insane.

The best loot system was dungeon siege 2. They had a spell that converted loot to gold. Less profitable than the shop. But it was worth it to save time and effort. They also had the most freedom when it came to multiclassing, at the cost of your own power at the end of the day.

Eg, you could follow the predetermined class combos of melee and nature magic or ranged plus the other type. They're balanced for late game. Just like every other single class. Or you could level up nature and the other type of magic to forcefully increase your intelligence attribute to be higher than normally possible, resulting in a higher max damage from your spells that you can cast. Mixing everything is possible, but will result in a weaker character.
Not trying to tell you how to play if your having fun but it might help your enjoyment if you try to spread out and take some active abilitys to make the gameplay more engaging.

I think the loot change is might be the part of the update I'm most excited for. I maintain that if a game requires you to use a loot filter (or otherwise sort through and disregard the vast majority of the items that drop) something has gone VERY wrong in its design process. Think about it. If the proper way to play is to ignore most of the loot, then why is that loot even dropping in the first place? By the same token, what does that mean for the games balance in terms of the resources you're leaving behind or vending/breaking down.
Sadly most current genre names were inherited from old games, old groupings when there were only handfuls of games to think about, or from older game types like board games and ttrpgs. We really need a full overhaul revamp, but getting people to reset their terms is… often considered fighting words
the only downside of playing grimdawn is having stuck with inquisitor as 2nd class because how op is the seal..before it was demolitionist tanky shield..played as poison nightblade with necro 2nd class and that is already a risky gameplay but fun otherwise
Is there ever gonna be an update to fix the atrocious map system in this game? Honestly it’s coming close to game breaking for me. Just bought this game a week ago & now not sure if I can keep playing it cause of the maps. If I wonder an entire map filling it all out then anything & everything I discover on that map should stay on the map, discovered, no matter how far I go or where I am elsewhere in the game. This is so stupid it makes literally all side content to be an incredible pain in the ass. I shouldn’t have to wonder all over a map I’ve already wondered all over to look for a cave entrance I’ve already discovered. Opening Google for every side mission to show a map location is bad design. For an ARPG it’s awful. Can’t place a marker to follow. Nothing is discovered till you’re near it. As if our characters can’t jot on a map “here’s where I found a cave entrance…”….lol.
Best ARPG in the World. Not such a totally crappy game like low diablo 4. I mean, Diablo 3 was crap... but diablo 4?? wtf, even tetris is a better arpg then Diablo 4. Last good Diablo was Diablo 2...

The Devs are realy one of the best, updating the Game for 7+ years.

Still (and apparently always) my fave aRPG. Gets grindy, but worth it imo

Quick Shaman pro-tip. Max Savagery and Brute Force as early as possible. Then go to Demolitionist and max Vindictive Flame.
Remember there are a few green drops from chest in the first zone, one 2H sword, a pistol, a rifle, and a 1h blade.

Hmm less loot... It actually annoyed me quite a lot as there was so much dropping. But now it may be a perfect game for me.
The Game also drops you more money now, to make up for all the stuff you cant sell now.
So two nice improvements.
It also has a cool loot filter so you can set it for things that you're specifically looking for and can't see any other drops.

I play as a warden and i´m basicly a god of thunder lol. Melting the entire screen with my thunder. Its almost too easy and getting bored
Best ARPG on the market, and will most likely stay at the top until the second one.

It's an auto-collecting resource, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I did think Grim Dawn was a free game to play with paid DLC... £19.99 for a 2016 game... looks good and very tempted to still purchase.

I honestly don't get everyone saying GD is the best arpg. It's fine. That's about it.
It’s the best because it’s the one that handles better the most important aspect of an arpg, accesible and variate building and crafting.
torchlight infinite is enjoyable casual arpg imo
oh god, how low poor torchlight has fallen, far away from the goodness of the second chapter, loved the one (i have a phisical copy too) loved two too, third capter is an insult and the portable one is a joke for me
I think the loot change is might be the part of the update I'm most excited for.
I maintain that if a game requires you to use a loot filter (or otherwise sort through and disregard the vast majority of the items that drop) something has gone VERY wrong in its design process. Think about it. If the proper way to play is to ignore most of the loot, then why is that loot even dropping in the first place? By the same token, what does that mean for the games balance in terms of the resources you're leaving behind or vending/breaking down.

Sadly most current genre names were inherited from old games, old groupings when there were only handfuls of games to think about, or from older game types like board games and ttrpgs. We really need a full overhaul revamp, but getting people to reset their terms is… often considered fighting words

the only downside of playing grimdawn is having stuck with inquisitor as 2nd class because how op is the seal..before it was demolitionist tanky shield..played as poison nightblade with necro 2nd class and that is already a risky gameplay but fun otherwise
I Played a custom poison acid nightblade soldier, i jump through everything right now its awesome. But i think necro blade is better

Is there ever gonna be an update to fix the atrocious map system in this game? Honestly it’s coming close to game breaking for me. Just bought this game a week ago & now not sure if I can keep playing it cause of the maps. If I wonder an entire map filling it all out then anything & everything I discover on that map should stay on the map, discovered, no matter how far I go or where I am elsewhere in the game. This is so stupid it makes literally all side content to be an incredible pain in the ass. I shouldn’t have to wonder all over a map I’ve already wondered all over to look for a cave entrance I’ve already discovered. Opening Google for every side mission to show a map location is bad design. For an ARPG it’s awful. Can’t place a marker to follow. Nothing is discovered till you’re near it. As if our characters can’t jot on a map “here’s where I found a cave entrance…”….lol.

Best ARPG in the World. Not such a totally crappy game like low diablo 4. I mean, Diablo 3 was crap... but diablo 4?? wtf, even tetris is a better arpg then Diablo 4. Last good Diablo was Diablo 2...
