Finland has had a very sober understanding of Russia for much longer than the rest of Europe, and invested in defense for a very long time, and that way Finland does not need to panic as much as the rest of us now. 'Slow and steady wins the race' as the saying goes. However, 'the rest of us' don't have time for 'slow and steady' now, so it will have to be 'leaps and bounds' ! Greetings from Norway.

Some western European Nato countries have included the pensions of military personnel in the "defence budget". Therefore, "percentage of GDP" is not a very good indicator of military capability. What matters is the money spent in military hardware and the amount of military training.

Well it is an expense of having a professional military, so in that regard it's totally warranted to be in the budgets. But that expense should also be easily identified from the budget, so it would be easier to evaluate how much money is spent on it, and how much on active military.

3:45 our non-alignment policy started its shift back in December -21 after Putin's declarations that not a single new member should be allowed into NATO. They started to enforce their foreign policy onto ours, and we took note of it. The balance shifted permanently at the invasion of Ukraine in February -22. We have followed a security policy which entailed the NATO option, and that would have snacked the rug from under our feet. The opposing and pro views of over joining NATO went absolutely to the opposites. I as well formerly held our "neutrality" as the better solution, up until the December Manifest of Putin.
We have had them as a thorn in our backside counting minimum twice a century for the past millennia and then some.... ..get ready, this century will be no different, we're already defending ourselves against russia's hybrid warfare and several sabotage attacks on our infrastructure. The heated and active phase of this war will come about very soon.

Peace and security are on most poeples list of important things in society. If more countries would have a general military service, concensus on security would be easier to achieve. Finland is a country with great cohesiveness brought on by a shared history since it's independence from Russia, its language and a shared national pride in the achievements of the country. Much of this is shared with the three other Nordic countries.
With respect to ability to finance defence and deterrence, we should remember that is terms of GDP, Europe is almost ten times larger than Russia and four times larger in terms of population. Thus, defence and deterrence are only querstions of concensus and political will.

Finland does not seem to be as divided politically or socially and Russia’s mis/disinformation was unable to make much inroads. The US has been primed for such interference for years. Many of the EU are also. How silly and stupid your comment is. Listen before you make ignorant judgements.

And even China and Russia have the right to their opinions even if they don't coincide with the US or EU. Political leaders in Finland should refrain from speaking English if the level is comparable to that of these individuals. It may appear appropriate, but the responses are hindered when they do not possess fluency in the language. They must utilize a significant portion of their thinking capacity to communicate in a foreign language and answers are often insufficient. I could have provided more insightful responses (as I have heard in Finnish), but the opportunity was limited due to the lack of fluency.

Yet he felt the need to constantly finish their sentences for them, as if him trying to save a second or two of the air time was his biggest contribution to this show. NO, it only makes him that much more annoying, LET THEM FINISH WHAT THEY WERE SAYING, then you can add whatever opinions you want on top of them, instead of this elementary school level of attempting to correct your students on their grammar, while they were perfectly capable experts in their respective fields to form their own thoughts and reach their own opinions, FFS!

What do you mean, "Decades if not centuries". Finland only came into existence at the end of 1917. Before that, it was a battlefield between the Swedes and the Russian Empire with the borders changing regularly. Having been under the control of the Swedish monarchy and a Swedish aristocracy for centuries except for two short periods of the 18th century when war raged between Russia and Sweden. In 1809 a war between Sweden and Russia resulted in the Russians under Alexander I seizing the territory roughly equating to the area of Finland kicking out the Swedish aristocracy, replacing them with Russian oppressors. Finland became a so-called autonomous grand duchy within the Russian Empire. The autonomy was nonsense. It must be remembered that St Petersburg is not far from the land inhabited by the Finns. Following the near revolution in Russia in 1905, a separate Parliament was established in Finland elected but universal suffrage. It was a talking shop as although they could enact what they liked, the German Czars in St Petersburg simply refused anything that they or their advisors didn't like. The Russian aristocracy effectively continued to rule the roost. It was only in the chaos of the 1917 revolutions in Russia that the Finnish Parliament declared an independent Finland.
Following an attempt by relatives of the German Czar to impose a German aristocrat as king it was not until July 1919 that the Finns elected their first president of an independent republic. The border with the Bolshevik administration in Russia was only settled in 1920.
    DECADES ? .... Yes ....... CENTURIES .... Absolutely not !

Finland wasn't "the battlefield between Russians & Swedes". What today is called Finland was the eastern part of Sweden for almost 700 years, ie part of the core Sweden. During those years they were frequently attacked by first Novgorod & later Muscovy. The invented, or should one perhaps say annexed, name Russia, came later.
