  • Still trying to get this pick technique down a little better. Plenty of people say playing bass with a pick isn't "true" to the instrument, that it dilutes the art. Some even say it's a simplified way of playing bass, but in my humble opinion, playing with a pick is significantly more difficult. Probably because I started with finger plucking like most. I LOVE the way a pick can make a bass sound, but need to work on accuracy and flow some more.Either way, it's an important technique to learn and can really open up your sound, especially for rock and funk.
    This is admittedly the only Cactus song I know, but it's funky as hell and fun to play lol. Allows for some noodlage if ya want to go there. I made a few mistakes, missed a string on a downstroke a few times, but the recording came out ok, Let me know what ya think.
    I do not own any copyrights to "Evil" by Cactus.This video is being uploaded solely for practice and critique.

      Ha, at the moment, this is the only song I've heard from Cactus lol. I'll do some digging to see about some more of their tunes, though. Love their sound. Thank you for the comment!

    nice work Woot. play that bass with a pick, your fingers, slap it, hit it, punch it, play soft, play hard, play how the mood feels. nothing wrong about playing with a pick at all its another sound the bass can make and as a guitarist for 40 years and a bass player in a band for almost one year, I am finding you can get more sounds out of a bass guitar than possible with a 6 string guitar, all else equal.

      Thanks much for the kind and encouraging words, man. That pick really is a challenge for me, but definitely worth working on (LOVE the sound of a pick, regardless of pickup config). I only know a few chords on the 6-string, so I can't really speak on versatility of sounds there, but you're absolutely right in that basses can take on lots of different voices depending on so many factors. Makes it all the more fun, IMO. Thanks again for the comment!

    • @woot1404

      Hey, thanks! The studio track's original bass tone is probably a little more "appropriate" for the song, but I wanted to try a more middy rock tone with the pick. Just to accentuate the pick attack. Almost added some distortion but decided against it. Glad it came through ok, though. Thanks much for the comment.

    Sounds great Woot! I need to make myself play with a pick. The ability for alternate picking and more aggressive attack is worth the patience to master the technique for sure:). Sounds to me like you're well on your way to that:)

      Thank you! (yet again lol).
      Gotta love the sound of a bass played with a pick. It's one of my favorite bass tones, so I had to make it a point to try and learn it. Definitely requires a different group of muscles and I struggle with accuracy a bit. But I'm slowly getting better with it, just trying different picks and materials, etc. It just FEELS good to me, and tends to make me play more expressively. Worth mastering, indeed.

      I did. The stock pickups were ok, but I changed them out to Seymour Duncan SPB-4's a few months after I got the bass. I love em.

    Hi WOOT! Love you cover and I'm using it as my learning platform for this song! but do you have by anychance a tab for the song? it's all good until the solo where it proves much harder to decrypt it... Thanks!

    • @woot1404
      @woot1404  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Victor Jean Hey Victor, thanks much for watching. Unfortunately, I don’t have tabs or notation for the song. I just transcribed it by ear to the best of my ability. The solo part is pretty challenging, but can be figured out with a little time/patience/repetition. Not to mention, I didn’t learn it exactly as it was played - I simplified it a bit while attempting to maintain the intended groove. Hope that helps, but if not, there are some tablature sites that may have this songs’ tabs available for you to check out. Again, thanks for the kind words, and good luck.

    • @woot1404
      @woot1404  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I've got no tabs. Learned it by ear. My transcription isn't spot on, but the main riff is repetitive and fairly easy to keep up with. Really fun song to play, too. I sometimes use the "solo" part at 1:18 as part of my warm up :D
