Stuart Margolin is a genius who directed many of the episodes. Meta Rosenberg said herself that when he and James Garner worked together there was no need for a director. RIP Mr. Garner, I miss the world I grew up in.
Father to goldador Back in the 70's my best friend and I where at the high school we both graduated from. We were at a football game and James Garner and one of the guys who usually played a bad guy on the Rockford Files where in the same stands as us. My friend walks up to Mr. Garner and says you are James Garner aren't you. 30 secs later they both leave .
Margolin's "Angel" character is one of the best if not the best supporting actor roles of all time. The show is timeless as is the interaction between Margolin and Garner. Best TV show of all time in my opinion.
Same feelings here. When I was a kid, Angel's character drove me up a wall! I had no idea it was all an act, Jim and him were good friends in real life. That's good acting.

Angel had to be the most cowardly, disloyal, dishonorable and just plain the sleaziest character in the history of television yet we all love him for it and that's due to the writing and Stu Margolin's emmy winning performance! You know he won two emmys for this role.
Pure luck that Stuart Margolin played Angel.There was a small part in the script of the Pilot for The Rockford Files and Meta Rosenberg knew Stuart was the man to play it.He was shooting Death Wish at the time in Arizona and Meta contacted him and he agreed immediately to play the part of Angel with his friend Jim Garner whom he had worked with in Nichols a few years prior.And the rest is history!
Angel, Mr. Margolin, was the best. He added so much to the Rockford Files. He was a joy to watch and a wonderful actor. He was always one of my favorites, and always will be.
The only thing better than Angel's telephone messages is when he was explaining the game of chess. If I would have had those pieces I would have probably learned how to play too.
I had the good fortune to meet Mr.Margolin & his brothers Arnold & Morris in 1998 at my former work place Glendale Adventist Medical Center My job was as a Pharmacy Delivery Clerk delivering meds,I.V.'s around the hospital.I saw him in the room with Arnold & Morris.The latter was in for something I don't recall let alone ask about.Never in a million years I thought I would into someone from my Mom's & my favorite show.Mind you I was when I introduced myself & explained that my Mom was one of the the biggest James Garner fans around(I forgot to mention me)and the real reason she watched the Rockford Files because of his work on the show.Stu was surprised and smiled & said Thank You.His brothers thanked me too.I did ask him about Mr.Garner & Stu said he was doing.For 20 minutes or so all of us was watching NFL football game involving the Dolphins & Jimmy Johnson was the coach at the time.It was one of the memorable & pleasurable moments of my life.I did meet or say hi to a lot of performers/athletes in my life as well.
I've watched the Rockford Files and MacGyver, and the characters of Angel Martin and Jack Dalton always seemed to be two of a kind, with one huge difference, and that is Jack was not the disloyal snake Angel was, but when it came to get-rich-quick schemes, God those two were like two peas in a pod.
Jim and Angel, sleeping in the RV while laying low from the bad guys, are awakened by the sound of something metal being unscrewed ... Jim: "Did you lock the gas cap like I told you Angel?" Angel: "I forgot Jimmy". BOOM!!!
