This was the man who made such classics like Earthbound on the SNES, Balloon Trip on the NES, to helping create all the early Pokémon and Kirby games. Which eventually lead to him having a hand in all the major Nintendo franchises; such as Mario, Legend of Zelda, and Animal Crossing. He helped push the idea of the DS, and it was because of him we even got the Wii. When the Wii U was failing; instead of laying off others and cutting wages; Iwata cut from his own pay check, something that is rare to see from a boss let alone a CEO. From the NES and Game Boy, all the way to the Wii U and 3DS; Iwata has had a huge impact in gaming. He's been a part of my childhood, as well as the childhood of others; and for that I thank him for his hard work, and all the heart and soul he put into putting a smile on someone else's face. He knew that games aren't about the best graphics and having the most powerful consoles, but instead its about the memories that we make through games, and the fun that we have through them with friends and family that really matter. In the end its about the memories we can share, and Iwata gave us just that. Rest in peace Mr. Iwata, you'll be dearly missed. Thank you for everything you did.
Very true I started playing more Nintendo since the launch of Mario Kart 8 because I remembered all the great memories I had as a kid playing Mario Kart on the N64 and I now play even more Nintendo games and it just continues to create great memories for me.
I got a Wii for Christmas way back and I played it a lot but I always wanted a 360 or ps3. I finally got a 360 but always found myself going back to the wii for wii sports and all of the other fantastic working games. Even with the new generation nothing was as fun as the Wii and even today I still have it and play it. Thank you Iwata. Thank you for adding even more fun to my childhood
R.I.P Satoru Iwata You truly were a pioneer in the gaming industry. My heart goes out to your family and i will always remember the games from my childhood that you made possible.
Holy shit, I'm welling up watching this. You don't have to be a huge Nintendo fan to appreciate just how drastically Iwata shook up the game industry, and the fact that he did it with such a genuine smile on his face is testament to his character. Rest in peace, you will be sorely missed.
R.I.P Mr. Iwata. LEGEND! Even though i'm a Playstation guy. I think alot of people here started in some way with something from Nintendo. As a little boy started with the Nintendo 64, Had a Nintendo DS and a Wii. Thank you Mr. Iwata for the best childhood ever! You will be missed forever!
This is all our story i think :( for me i was 4 years OLd when i got my ds lite :) iT was Just amazing! I later got a Wii got over 100 games man for that then got a Xbox 360 THATS where is started my GTA and cod carier then got a 2ds broke later on then got a new 3ds xl and then a Wii u STILL play them all THANK YOU IWATA WE LOVE YOU!
Fred Schriks No seriously, like the PS1 was a joint project between Playstation and Nintendo and there are even some Nintendo versions of the PS1 knocking around. Nintendo pulled out as they didn't think the console would be a success.A bit of a fuck up on their part.
This is a sad moment for every gamer in the world, no matter where you play on, he was and still is an inspiration, and he is one of the true fathers of gaming as we know it now. Rest in peace Mr Iwata.
Looking at this reminds me of my childhood. GameCube was my first Nintendo console I ever owned...up to the Wii U now. Thank Iwata for creating my and a million other kids' childhood!
R.I.P Satoru Iwata :"( and thank you for being a true hero and pioneer for the gaming industry and bringing us memorable fun games from Nintendo. You will be missed dearly.
Yes very true but Nintendo will rise again. Iwatas legacy will live on. Here's a way to look at it. A tree drops a seed then dies that seed is going to be something to bring Nintendo up the dead tree is still there but will not make anything anymore.
"Nintendo is undoubtedly standing on far more solid foundations now than it was 13 yeas ago. Iwata's legacy serves as a reminder of how far one can go if they never give up on their ideas." Well, GameSpot, that's a job well done. You made me cry again.
Systems like the ds and ds lite were a defining moment in my childhood. Although I am much older now, and have moved on from most nintendo products, I will never forget the joy that those systems gave me. R.I.P Satoru Iwata.
He is responsible for putting the Kanto region in Pokemon Gold and Silver which made it the best Pokemon game ever imo and it's one of my favorite games of all time because of that. Thank you Iwata for everything you have done for the gaming community.
I started gaming with Nintendo--one way or another, it's because Mr. Iwata. Thank you for giving me suh a beautiful childhood. All that afternoons, they were beautiful.
This fuckin came out of nowhere,he seemed so healthy and relatively young age,old sure but not that old. Rest in piece, like nintendo or not the dude was a major figure in the gaming world and its history.
Such an inspiration to keep taking risks and pushing forward. This man was the head of my most fond memories with my high school friends and spearheaded what was to be my greatest gaming experience to date (the GameCube). This just makes me sad. Thanks Iwata san. You're a real OG.
Thank you. Thank you so much for being apart of my childhood and so many other people childhood. We will miss you but one day we will meet again. R.i.p Mr. Iwata
Thank you Iwata-san, if you hadn't intervened in the development of Melee, and made sure it came out on time, I don't think Melee would be what it is today. No wombo combo, no Ken, no Mang0, Armada, PPMD, or the other gods. No DBR, Team Ben, or DA. There would be no project m, or vgbc for that matter. You made it so GSC could have Kanto in them. You made earthbound. Among many other masterpieces. You carved my childhood, and made some of the happiest moments I could recall. You were like part of the family with the games you made, and we let you into our homes, and you became a part of those memories we most of us hold dear. Some of us didn't have great childhood backgrounds, but you and Nintendo, singlehandedly made our lives a little better. You helped change lives and create a generation of dreamers, who are chasing their dreams because you chased yours. You left us too soon, but I infer that you left us some of the greatest gifts. You gave us the true meaning of what games were about (no matter how you played them), they are about having fun. The last gift was the legacy you left behind for us. This legacy is not only in your life, but also in the innovative products that you pioneered. I will miss the soulful Nintendo directs, that always made me smile. Sure, time will pass and there will be a new President of Nintendo. But there will never be another Satoru Iwata. I just wanna let you know...that I thank you for everything from the bottom of my soul. RIP Mr.Iwata (1959-2015) #ThankYouIwata
Mr. Iwata's life can be compared to a video game. He starts out small, graduating college and making a few games for Nintendo (Kirby and Earthbound for example). Then over time he gains more experience, and he levels up and becomes the president of the company. A few of the stages/years he had to go through were though, and he probably lose a lot of lives/make some sacrifices to save the company. But in the end, he got through it. He kept on going in leading Nintendo to the position they're in now. And now he has finally reached his "end game sequence". He has finally earned his 100% completion bonus for all the effort and sacrifice he put. And now he's up there, looking at all the work he did while he was down here, smiling with joy. Rest in peace, Satoru Iwata. Your human form may be gone, but your Mii shall forever stay in all of our WiiUs, for as long as Nintendo lives.
It felt like I'd lost a family member when he died. I never realized just how much he did for Nintendo and how much of an impact it had on my life. Rest in peace Iwata. We will never forget the wonderful things you did for us.
Rest in peace mr.Iwata, you lived a good life that changed the very face of gaming with your innovation. I only hope that the legacy you have left behind will be able to charge upwards to new heights in honor of your memory. May the nintendo spirit you so passionately believed in continue to live on for times immortal.
One of gaming's best corporate leaders has passed. We will miss you Iwata, but you will forever be remembered in the games you had a hand in creating and the joy they've given. May your new game+ mode be filled with an awesome level.
4:04 This is a very moving statement, and really shows why he was able to understand the business side and at the same time connect with gamers. Thank You for your amazing contributions to the industry and to the hearts of gamers worldwide. RIP Satoru Iwata...
Goodbye the chosen one. The one who brought gaming to life. The one that brought me into gaming. The sadest moment in my lifetime until the queen dies is your death. At least you will be playing Zelda with Robin Williams. Goodbye and may you rest in peace.
Even as a non nintendo fan it's a loss to the community, it's sad to see such a man leave us. Just the way he talked you could tell he cared about games more than money. A rare quality nowadays.
I got my first Nintendo DS when I was 7. That DS is the reason I am who I am today, a gamer. I've moved on from Nintendo now, although, I'll hop on a game of Mario Kart from time to time. My WII was given to me when I was 9, on Christmas morning of 2009. On my birthday of next year, December 6th, I got Mario Kart. What turned into a passion of Nintendo slowly turned into a passion for other consoles. Games like Call of Duty and Halo were games that got me into Xbox. I haven't touched my WII in over 3 years, it's sitting in my living room collecting dust, but I won't forget the excitement I felt when I first opened the Nintendo DS, My first gaming device. Thank you, Iwata.
Did they just talk about the 3DS as if it's a failure? It's the most succesful current-gen piece of hardware. And they keep re-releasing it, with different version, staying at the $200-230 range. Nintendo is printing money with it, even though their home console failed.
It wasn't really successful until OoT 3D and games of the like came out and generated hype for it. From the launch, however successful it is now, it seemed almost inevitable that it would be a flop.

La Kill Gamecube didn't do very well commercially, but I'll be damned if it wasn't the best console when it was out. And I owned a PS...
I... Had a PlayStation. :(
same... I didn't want to play with these barbie dolls..
I wanted Nintendo, that was the only thing that made me happy in my

R.I.P Satoru Iwata :"( and thank you for being a true hero and pioneer for the gaming industry and bringing us memorable fun games from Nintendo.
You will be missed dearly.
Well....I cried like a man. R.I.P man I hope we get more great people like you in the future to lead us gamers in the right direction.
I have a bad feeling that with this gaming is gonna go down a dark road. It was Iwata-san and nintendo that kept the true essence of gaming alive.
Yes very true but Nintendo will rise again. Iwatas legacy will live on. Here's a way to look at it. A tree drops a seed then dies that seed is going to be something to bring Nintendo up the dead tree is still there but will not make anything anymore.
Hopefully so but i fear Nintendo is heading down a dark path soon.
JeDkGaming It seems that you can't understand the concept of an opinion, my friend. Need to get a handle on that bro.
This is a sad death, but you're taking it too far. The Wii was the exact opposite of the essence of gaming. It was casual redefined.
Hello!?! PS4 is selling like PS2 . With Nintendo dead. The competition is dead! SONY HAS A MONOPOLY . GAMING IS SAVED
"Nintendo is undoubtedly standing on far more solid foundations now than it was 13 yeas ago. Iwata's legacy serves as a reminder of how far one can go if they never give up on their ideas."
