      Survival Russia in the documentation "happy people-a year in the Russian taiga" one guy also made them himself you might want to try it out. It takes straight grained wood planks a, plane, hot water and something to hold them in place when bending

      Robin, these skis are laminated.

      Annie I know but plain wood works as well, I think this design has been around a lot longer than laminating in the Taiga

    The same principle of fur is still used today with off piste skiers and snowboarders, except their system is removable and the backcontains a glue, and clips front and back are used to fix it to the ski. Modern touring bindings have walk mode which hinges as well. Touring ski's are also very wide and the boots are lighter as well, not like this setup, but still.

    I know what you mean about falling in deep snow and getting stuck. It took me several minutes to get up once when I was skiing, because the snow was too soft and deep. I had to wiggle around till I could undo the skis. I have to admit, I was getting concerned for a few minutes.

    Hello Lars, I got in touch with this company. They wanted to know my height and weight along with the total of a backpack. I'f 5'10", 170pounds, with the backpack total at most would be about 230 pounds. What ski would you recommend?

    • @SurvivalRussia
      @SurvivalRussia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean what type of skis, then I would of course go for the ones with a strip of fur or the ones fully covered in fur. The "full-fur" version is expensive though.

    Still kicking around the idea of getting myself a pair but generally where I go it has been well traveled by snow-machines so getting in is not a huge effort for the best part. I've only ever used waxless skis or skis with climbing skins for cross-country or uphill use. I've long wondered how waxed skis worked compared to the other systems. I really like that simple binding system...gets the job done and easy to get out of! I imagine that those skis aren't far removed from the ones that the old time Scandinavians originally developed long ago.

  • @Standswithabeer
    @Standswithabeer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Absolutely the best, cross country load skis I have ever seen! I am impressed. These skis will probably handle almost every type of snow out there. Most people ( I imagine, anyway) do not understand the makeup and sheer number of types of snowfall (folk.ntnu.no/ivarse/snjoord.html ... and www.wilds.mb.ca/taiga/tbspub56.html ), and the stages it goes through as it falls through varying air temperatures and as it ages on the ground. Snow changes a lot. Moving through it, and moving through it with an unstable load on your back (that moose leg, for example! :)) does require stable footing that will accommodate changes in balance and inhibit rearward movement. That large amount of horse fur is brilliant. Gosh-- I wish I still lived where there was snow.

    The hunter skis can double as a bed in the woods - upside down.
    And if you order two pairs, you can easily convert one pair into a sledge with a long rectangual box of some sort on top of them. Well, I guess my brain can need some sleep now. Have a good night folks.

    Those skis might have some applications on super light powder and flat ground but I think that may be it. Removable skins are almost a must as is a better binding for catching that free ride home. What I really would like some info on is the skis in your cross draw neck knife video.

    • @SurvivalRussia
      @SurvivalRussia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Might have some application" :) This is an age-old and time proven design. Ideal for long steady trips, even hauling a sled. The basic design possibly originates from the Altai Mountains, so of course these can be used on slopes and hill terrain too. The white skis in mentioned video are the cheaper and heavier factory made "copies" of these. They still work though. No fur skins though.

      JJ you probably have more experience than me as I've only been skiing for 45 years. I've also chased lions through some of the worst country you can find on skis with skins and I know what works and what doesn't. Survival Russia is right, snowshoes suck. We call them misery slippers up here. However not all skis are better. While I think those skis would be awesome on that tabletop where the vid was filmed, if you had to use them to get through some rugged country I can guarantee they would be on your back not where they belong.

    • @jerseyjeeper1575
      @jerseyjeeper1575 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clint Stubbe Hey Clint, very interested in what skis you use, what skins etc. thanks!

    • @airy-mountain
      @airy-mountain 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jersey Jeeper I've tried lots of combos over the years and what works the best is personal preference but modern fat powder skis have as much surface area as a snowshoe. They also are strong enough to retain a binding for taking advantage of the downhill portions. If a ski is too wide you can't traverse sidehill as the ski just lays over especially without a strong binding. Old school leather boots work fine as long as you aren't getting too serious with your telemark turns and any skin that covers most of the surface of your ski. They go on and off in a jiffy. Too big of a topic to cover fully. Don't want to slag those skis or that company because as I said for that terrain I think they would be great, just not great all round in my opinion.

    And I'll be getting a pair of those Winter Ichigi soon! They look great too!
    I'd think all the bracing and ski sticks would only be useful if you're doing sport skiing. It wouldn't make sense to lock your feet in your skis when you're out trekking through the woods.
    I'll watch the fatback video soon! I need to catchup on your videos.

    Lars, I am very interested in these. I hunt and trap on snowshoes. The film "Happy people" is the first I have heard of these, and tried to make some like they show in that film. My tree had too much twist and it didn't work. I want to use them for wolf trapping. I think deer or elk hair on the bottom would add scent the wolves would not be afraid of. Horse hair would last longer though. Please show more of this! Thanks!

    Always neat to see different countries solutions to outdoors issues, cool looking skis Lars. Would you say they work the same leg muscles as regular walking or do you have to build up time on them to be able to walk with feet apart like that. I would be interested in seeing them climb an incline and perhaps a little down the hill action, just something small, not like Александр Викторович Хорошилов style stuff. :D

  • @norton750cc

    Beautiful ,function with form. They are a tool, not a toy. Long and wide so weight is distributed so not to sink or the front of the ski to dig in to the snow. Thousands of years went into their design, I think the hide hair would work well even going up an icy ski trail... Those toe bindings are awesome, any boot will fit, and no fear of injury if you fall over...
    Siberian uphill ski racing sounds like a plan? Lars, I bought a silky 180 folding saw, fantastic tool, every tree I see I want to saw it!! Only downside is that the wood has to be solidly held.
    Sawing teeth are so aggresive. Good work!

    • @SurvivalRussia

    These skis look very interesting. Do you know how the laminated wood holds up in wet/wet and freeze conditions. I have some experience with primitive skis and I think that every pair that I've had has delaminated due to the soak and thaw effect. The family that makes them is fantastic to deal with. I got some of their boots as a gift. They are warm, comfortable and very quiet while walking in the woods. Took 7 weeks from order to delivery in the U.S. Good cold weather motorcycling boots too. Love your videos.

      Hello Duane. I know they use PP for customers abroad. I'm also quite sure the receiver was an 'Ivan". I can try and double check, but then you will have to send me a PM here. I went to your channel and it does not have the option of sending you messages. It will be hard for me to find this comment again in 12 hrs time :)

    That horse hair/skin strip is a rather ingenious idea! As a Finn I've gotten used to the basic slim skis, though some people here sometimes use the wider "old timey" ski which some folks call "The Army ski" because those were in use in the Finnish Army. Those Siberian hunter-skis do look like they're awesome for deep snow treks. Can't wait for the fatback video, thank you for the continued quality video output! The Pink Ninja disguising as an everyday skier gave me a chuckle.

    Functionally those seem to do what snowshoes do, only better, because they are longer (giving you better flotation). I would imagine that you can move faster and break trail easier using the hunter skis than you could on snowshoes. I don't know how they would function in very steep terrain - that is what I am most curious about. Where I live it is common to travel up very steep hills (1000' of elevation gain per mile) and snowshoes are preferred. Interesting product! I can't wait to see you putting those skis in action soon.

      This method benefited from experience gained many generations. To do this, you can use a hide that needs to take from the legs of an ungulate animal. What we see (furry strip on centerline), it's a convenient way to move around the hilly terrain as well as on ice or frozen snow. If you need stealthiness and low noise, then the side ribs on skis get a fur upholstery too. The entire underside is covered with fur if soft snow is around. We can also use another way in which the casing looks like as a removable fur stocking. This is useful if the weather changes or it takes to speed up the run.

      +tdrnkr Lars is on 'frozen' crusted 'snow', rain>sleet>snow>rain, 'laminated' into crust. Deep soft snow much different.

    What sucks is that skis like this are not available here in Canada. Even though my grand father used his frequently they just are not anything you can purchase here. The only solution is to make them yourself or find a ski maker and have them made for you. Trying to have anything shipped from Russia is difficult at best since the trade sanctions. Sucks for those of us who need products that are only made in Russia.

      @@SurvivalRussia Thank you. Your channel has become my favorite in the last year. I enjoy it more than all the others. The forests you frequent are very much the same as here in Northern Canada. You have inspired me to get out more than I have in the past. I just returned from a 2 week stay at our camp along the Ottawa River. First time staying for that long over winter. It is amazing how much the river ice talks at night. Great experience. Thank you for such a wonderful channel.
