Oh, the memories! I purchased one of those brand new in the 1980's for my kids to push a 12' aluminium (aluminum) dinghy around on the harbour (harbor) :). They had so much fun - the big thing to remember was to open the air vent on the fuel cap - or you would stop unexpectedly. Starting it was fun - as you pointed out - it is a direct drive so when it started you were underway. The kids soon learnt to push off from the beach, bow first, hop aboard and start her up.

I have had a plastic deck Honda HRX lawn mower since 2006. It's NEVER failed me. I noticed last year it'd idle but hunt so this spring I took the carb off, sprayed it out, and reassembled. Good as new! I paid 800 bucks for it in 2006 (not cheap) and I remember asking the guy at the Honda dealer (no big box store for me) if he thought it'd last me 10+ years. lol Dumb question!

yup harmony 215. $115 second hand store. $10 carb replacement and governor spring adjustment. back wheels are kind of binding at the moment. probably just need fresh lube.

Great video again bud. We in the UK call them both split pins and cotter pins. Loved the makeshift pond, but I think you dribble over your floor a bit haha. A few of the counties hear, have designated the their lakes combustible fuel free, so electric motors only. Oh and I was always taught that if it's combustion it's an engine, if it electric it's a motor lol.

Some of the various small engine repair manuals have diagrams showing how to tie a knot for the starter handles. The way you did it results in too small a knot that will eventually just pull through the handle. Wish I could describe it but, a diagram is worth a thousand words.

Re: end knots... figure 8 knots work better than just an overhand. I have A) had overhand knots come out on their own. B) had overhand knots jam and be hard to remove. A figure 8 doesn't seem to self loosen, yet is still undoable.

Wow - 30 bucks, what a score. I bet if they used it as a dingy motor on a sail boat its one that can lay on its side (yep, confirmed by the extensions on the plastic opposite the handle). We had to have that so it could lay in the lazerette inside the boat. This makes it desirable to sailing folks. Its hard to find these anymore in a 4 stroke. I paid 450 for one that needed a carb rebuild.

Hey Mustie as a kite boarder I get plenty of unwanted knots in my lines which weaken them The trick for releasing a very tight knot is to place the line on a hard turface and hit the knot lightly with a hammer turning the knot until it loosens. Works like a charm just like your honda!

You lucky dog, that's when they had the better carbs, and I've been looking for one of those. Have come across ones slightly larger around here..with people who want like $1200 for them, but I need a small one like that for my small duck boat, had been running it w/a 1958 Chrysler mtr.,which runs like a top, but a friend knocked a pole digger onto it and it broke the fuel cap, have yet to find a replacement.Would have replaced that fuel line though ;) Lil says she takes a bath at the cabin every yr...and that's good enough! Would have bought that boat, even if it's the last thing I need to add another around here!

Originally I'm pretty sure there was another metal pin tied inside the knot. This would allow extra support for the pull handle itself. Maybe someone already mentioned this below I didn't read all the comments. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming for us old gear heads!!

Hey guy, I'd change that water pump impeller out. If they sit for more than 2 years, the impeller takes on the shape of the pump in the position their stopped in, and as you know it gets smaller and bigger in pump housing. Pump impeller stays in that shape, and usually chunks out in short order after being put back in service. Just trying to save you from frying motor. Honda can tell you the year with serial number, I'm guessing late 90s to early 2000s. I used to be service mgr. for a Nissan, OMC Johnson, Force dealership, and if that don't impress ya, we were also cruise and carry, and eska dealers too.

About 10 years ago we were fishing in the GWN, and one of the guys with us went to pull anchor and it was real hard pulling up. well it took 3 of us to pull it out and there was a 12 foot boat attached to it. On the back end was a small Honda like that one. We pulled it on shore dumped the water out of the boat and it floated. So we pulled the whole thing back to the lodge that was painted on the side of the boat. The lodge owner said that boat had gone missing a bunch of years before, and he turned it in to the ins company. Said you want it take it,, we brought it back to the lower 48, the boat was in good shape,, and as far as I know as I know after tear down cleaning it is still running today,, Honda motors are damn near bullett proof

Whilst holding the knot with your non-dominant hand (firmly between thumb and index), twist the end wire a few turns to reduce the diameter (as you twist), then push towards the knot. They come undone. It works with rope, works with plastic bags etc.

Never nothing wrong with overfilling a unknown OB motor. Will get a nice flush,,then drain and inspect. The "tightness" can also be the bottom end. A rubber tipped?? water pump impeller there somewere usually. Those rot apart after sitting and turn to dust when they are cranked to life again. (if the motor turns over,,the WP impeller does also,,when water cooled). damn impellers are the same price as the find. Carb has had alcohol gas thru it sometime in its life.. The white crusties inside have to go or no play well on the average. Neat find. Congrats.

well that was a deal-- I worked on those for a boat rental and they were both air and water cooled- as were many of the "lawnmower" outboards from tecumseh and clinton. Seems I remember the water pump to be an early Mercury water pump, but with a different drive pin/key. The one we had - had a centrifugal clutch and the water pump only enguaged when the prop turned.

It's worth changing the water pump impeller even though it's pumping now. If the old fins break off they can plug things up in a hurry. Something for the new owner to do.

All that (the bucket of water), to get rid of the spider! hehe
Should consider getting like a 10-gal Brute trash can, then you can have the water-in/water-out using the same container.

I too just got a 20 dollar outboard motor from a yard sale. It was in Massachusetts. It's a 2 horsepower sea king

Always enjoy your videos. Did you notice the spelling of "Moter" on the faceplate??...Love your dog, Lilly. There's something very special about an old dog.

great video. however, to help, water is heavier than oil. gasoline is an oil product. In a carb with water in it the water is always in the bottom as I remember. Great work my friend.

I'm digging that boat too, it should come home with you for sure! I think the diesel would be too slow turning for it though unless you managed to hook up a gearbox that increases the output speed 2X

My Son's and I love your channel! Congratulations on your new shop. It was very much earned. BTW Please give those poor Klipsch KG4"s a home up a little higher. You have a bunch of vintage audiophiles gasping! lol Best Wishes to you!

I believe that 4 stroke is a 3hp but I’m not positive I think the engine is air cooled and the water pisser is to muffle the exhaust .

oil over water, fill lower unit either way, drain and check Before winter and refill. Lowers tend to cool and suck water in if seal is bad.

Cut a notch in pull string hi start hole of cover so the pull start handle will go through it. Maybe a smaller pull string handle from the stash, too. Otherwise, great deal and work on a sweet little outboard.
