His photographs ARE stunning! He has an excellent eye and a real talent for subject selection. It breaks my heart to consider how different some of those landscapes are just a short time later, but I have in mind several family members who may receive some artwork for Christmas this year!
I'm reading national coverage with the usual references to fatalism and of hopeless youth with no vision for the future - and though I didn't need any convincing - he sure is a brilliant argument against that typical nonsense. Well, done!

I can remember this very well . I was working underground at the time , and I had just turned 25 a few days before the first explosion . I knew one of the miners that died in the first explosion , and I knew 2 that were in the 2nd explosion . NO , not a single one of these miners will ever be forgotten as long as I'm alive ! Indeed the young guy has done a fine job, my comment does not distract from that. He says, " the mine safety was not where it needed to be,, the result of the Scotia Mine disaster was pushing the Mine Health, and Safety Act of 1977, which ultimately bettered the mine safety standards of all coal mines in the area." His comment I'm sure is true, however, no law then, or now will prevent accidents (My father who lost his right hand as a result of a co-worker's carelessness in a mine; [He was mine foreman, and first aid instructor] he said on a regular basis; accidents, all accidents do not 'happen' they are caused). What's by far more important is TRUTH, HONESTY, and COURAGE in spite of a system, and supervisors who expect safety corners to be cut. I had a good friend who died a couple years ago. He was well known, respected, and admired in Letcher county. He told me the story 6 - 8 years ago of observing a mine foreman tampering with his methane gas detector, and or altering the reading, reporting false readings. After observing this misdeed happen either once, or twice, he quit his job at Scotia, and the mine explosion happened on about the second day he was in the clear..

Coal mining is a hard life. Miners don't get the respect they deserve. They fight tooth and nail for black lung benefits and get refused. Some get their black lung and then the judges take it away from them. Then they want the miners to pay it all back. Same thing with the miner's widows. I know of several miners and widows this has happened to. it's not fair to them to be granted benefits then STOLEN by the judges after being awarded what was deserved. A judge in Corbin, KY is known for doing just this.
Very true! My father-in-law fought for years for his black lung, after his wife died he lost the will to fight for it anymore and just quit. Never did get it.
I worked in a couple of mines in australia for 22 years...received compensation for injuries and loss of hearing and no one can take it away.How can a judge demand a widow pay back benefits? Im guessing America is not a country Id like to live in...Home of the brave? for sure.Land of the free?? definitely not ...land of rabid capitalism? for sure....
My dad use to work there and he told me bout the explosion.. said he was the other shift when this happened. Had just missed it.

I remember that disaster some. My dad had an office in Whitesburg.
I live in Southwest Pennsylvania. My wife’s cousins husband works in a coal mine not underground but at the mine facility plus we know others who are involved as well in the mining industry.
I feel for each and everyone who’s in it. It’s dirty and very dangerous work.
Harry Caudill’s book Night Comes To The Cumberlands tells a fearsome story on Kentucky and the mining boom and bust cycle.

My mom gave me a copy of the book for Christmas 1981. I still have the book plus 2 other books by Mr Caudill in my library.

I loved this collab. I subscribed to his You Tube channel and I also sent him a friends request on Face Book. I really loved this. There is so much history in Ky. You just have to seek it out. Great job to both of you.

Thanks you’all, my Papaw was a Joy Loader operator in Liggett mine. I saw one working at the museum of science and industry in Chicago when I was a kid and it looked like Scary and hard work ! Great piece! Ironically, the TH-cam video I watched right before this one was a reaction video to Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John". Kinda spooky. Kudos to Mr Turner (I was very surprised how young he was. It's just awesome! I was expecting an older gentleman!) He's very knowledgeable. Wow, what a talented young man! I can't wait to get over to his channel & see what's there. Many of my family & in-laws have worked in the mines. It's the reason my dad & mom moved to Chicago as that was one of the only job options he had & he didn't want tp be a miner.

Interesting video. I worked there from 1980 until Arch Minerals shut it down. Looks nothing like I remember. I remember walking across the catwalk. I saw one of your other videos on Maggards Grocery, there was an elevator shaft at Frank's Creek where most of the men went into the mine. Great place to work and even better people to work with.
Delivered there till it was shut down. Lots of good men. Remember the local union office beside the road.
My dad was one of those men that recovered those bodies. My dad was getting ready to in when the explosion started. It was sad and devastating day. He pulled all those bodies out and had pictures of that devastated day. The pictures was devastating to look at.

I agree with you Scott. I visited the entrance to a working mines once and I could not believe man were going down in that darkness
My dad work there for years before them two ponds was open to the public that was some of the best fishing in letcher

Dec 8th 1981 we had a explosion at mine 21 here in the sqeuatiche valley TN which Tennessee consolidated coal company owned and Grundy mining company ran it we lost 13 miners due to methane explosion

I had a few friends who died in the 2 Scotia blasts. They closed & sealed the mine for almost a year after the 2nd explosion. My uncle was working in the mines & part time at a funeral home & he was one of those who went into the mine once it was reopened & vented to retrieve the bodies. My aunt told me he had nightmares for years after he helped retrieve the bodies.
That’s one of the places I fish

I am a former harlan County coal miner .was born and raised in cumberland, I spent 20 years underground there. When Obama took all the work away from us; had to move away to another state for new job to support my family. My dad and all his brothers worked at Scotia. I remember going there as a kid.
My uncle also died it that mine, (Arthur Butch Foutch) I laughed watching this video because I remember the water truck running and how they bussed everyone to mines in those blue busses
