I just inherited an 81 Toyota pickup exhibiting a rusty bed in the same locations you highlighted. I'm actually glad the actual bed is in multiple pieces so I can work on each individually.

Door skins make good repair panels for the outside of the bed.

A truck bed could be easily replaceable. The places I'd look for if buying some of these trucks would be the frame area near the fuel tank, as mud and debris get easily caught there, rusting the frame. And under the front fenders taking a peek there with the doors open, since the water from the cowl drains to there.

I've been fighting rust on my '86 for over a decade. I got it in Florida and someone had put a bed liner and a roll bar in the bed so I never realized there were removable panels to access the inner fender wells.

Hope yours is still looking good behind the panels... better than an Ohio truck for sure!

@@6thGearGarage I was just "rust preventing" it yesterday with some Krylon Black Primer. It's already eaten holes through but it's not nearly as bad as the Ohio truck. Now I'm a strange dichotomy of sad and disappointed with relieved and grateful. Thanks? Lol...Really interested in seeing what you decide to do with this.

Would be an interesting Science project, filling all the panels with expandable foam some truck in it way out. A taboo theme among many repairs. Been around many cars, that they eventually rust because the draining plugs under the panels get clogged. The foam would avoid water to get inside in the first place.

In the first video of the truck where I got it running, I showed the cab corner which was filled with spray foam at one point. However the rust continued to eat away at the metal, to the point where it went beyond the top of the foam. I wonder if the foam helped hold moisture because it was porous? I'd still put my money on Fluid Film, or similar product over spray foam.

My base model '86 didn't come with the panels. Blessing and curse, because I have dents from stuff sliding around in the bed.
I'm pondering using stainless cables or something to protect without trapping junk.

the bed of my 1980 pickup is the same way, dented up from the inside. I'd say it's worth not having the inner panels to prevent rust, but the bed on that 1980 isn't far behind this one :(

the inner bed sides are part of the reason why these beds rot so bad. the other reason why is on inner bed seem underneath the bed floor toyota decided that seam sealer is not required so salt water and dirt would get in it and cause it to start rusting. the cleanest factory bed I have had was undercoated along that inner bed seam.

The Nissan beds from the same era will bolt right onto these trucks. We did it with ours when our bed rotted out. We called it a Toysan after that.😂

Ive got an 87 and have just the starting of rust between the seams right at the back edge of rear fender. How would you go about fixing it?....Its a Ca truck so rust is minimal

Have you looked behind the removable panels yet? That will let you know how serious/expensive of a repair you're getting into.

@@6thGearGarage Thats ok I have a cap so stays clean...my rust is with in the wheel well 2 inchs of light rust at the end of the seam at the tire...think I need to clean out old seam sealer get rid of as much rust as I can and treat with rust stop and seal inside and out side the seam and paint. Thanks for the vids and info....I also find the front of the rain gutter over windows to be a bad design and rust there to...bad drainage from plastic trim.

I've always liked the look of the American style beds on the 84-88 trucks.

Did you use it for hauling rocks? I noticed it had air shocks the other day and found some pieces of polished stone in the bed.

I installed granite countertops for 10 years and I would put scrap stone in the bed for winter weight.

POS Toyota can't even last 40 years in the rust belt???

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

Not a chance, then again I don’t see anything 40 years old on the roads around here unless they’re stored for winter.

@@6thGearGarage I was being facetious. My first 85 started rusting at the seam after 4 years back in 89 living in N. New Jersey.
