Beautiful bowl as usual. You mentioned the problem with the age of shellac. Even though it takes a little time to mix thoroughly, I have found using shellac flakes prevents me from buying or keeping old shellac. I just make what I need for several weeks worth of turning and make more when the time comes. It has also allowed me to experiment with the different pound cuts. Making finish is an art. Everyone has their own preferences whether glossy or satin. The journey is always enjoyable. Again, wonderful bowl.

Madame, Sie haben wieder einmal eine ausgezeichnete Arbeit geleistet!
Das Video sind prima! Alles Wesentliche ist gut zu sehen und nachvollziehbar. Man lernt davon.
Diese Schale ist wirklich gut geworden, obwohl ich mir den optischen Effekt mit den Federn intensiver vorgestellt hatte.
Aber vielleicht lagen diese einfach etwas zu tief in der Rinne?

Nice work! I have seen where wood was removed from under the pour to allow light thru translucent die which would really pop your feathers. I finish most of my pieces with clear epoxy so sanding to 220 over a colored pour or inlay is all that is needed for a hi gloss finished. I then buff or sand down to get a satin finish if desired. Love your videos. I use a bbq motor to turn the lathe for epoxy finish to cure.

Very nice Kim. I read an article about someone course experience with David Ellsworth recently, and one of the things they learnt from him, was to stand beside what your turning with the tool rest out of the way, and simply bend over at the waist so you can view what your working on as though it's sitting on it's base. This way you can see better the shape your working on how it will look when in the position most people will see it.

    • @DiemenDesign
      @DiemenDesign 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just had an epiphany. The finishing mix your using, is almost French Polishing, I wonder how the finish would look if you went the extra step to use cotton wrapped around sheep wool. I think due to the Lanolin in the wool it would look even shinier and keep it even longer.

Very cool. I haven't worked with resin with the lathe yet but have wondered about using it with feathers. I used to make different stuff with resin, like filling vases with various articles like stones, shells, glass beads, sand, pine cones and such; I even made some earrings with resin using spiders as the jewel - now those were interesting and sold like crazy!
Anyway, I usually watch my subscriptions in order of placement on the subscriptions panel but saw this one and watched it first. Glad I did!

Happy Sunday Kim. What a beautiful piece!! I'm sure you already know this but
just an FYI in case you do another piece with thin epoxy. If you apply heat with a heat gun to the epoxy it will get rid of your air bubbles so its nice and clear since you're not using a presure pot. You'll want to pour 1/4 inch, hit with the heat gun, wait for a minute or two and hit with the heat gun. Then pour your next 1/4 inch of epoxy and repeat the process with the heat gun. It's a tedious process but well worth the effort. If you have that stubborn bubble that just wont come all the way up, heat the tip of a sewing pin with a lighter and poke the air bubbles.
Even if you may already know this, Hopefully this comment will help anyone else using epoxy resin in this way.
Thank you for yoir videos and actually explaining your process. I just love watching what you come up with.

I like the finish and the ratios are informative. To be a bit nerdy and analytical about shine-juice proportions: OB Shine Juice (OBSJ) is generally 1/3 each Shellac, Denatured Alcohol (DNA) and Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO). Frenchie's is 60% Shellac, 30% DNA, 10% BLO--so just heavier Shellac, less BLO.
Shellac works more at the surface as it is a waxy/resin that forms a super thin barrier/coat when the DNA evaporates. For this reason shellac is often used in more diluted form as or in sanding sealer. It is very forgiving to apply and maintain but is also alcohol soluble so if the final product is something like a coaster for alcoholic drinks, or furniture that will get heavy exposure to abuse or touching/hand oils, the shellac won't be as durable as something like polyurethane because of the downsides of its positive attributes. But shellac is also easy to refinish if necessary.
BLO is an oil so it penetrates the wood more to bring out the grain. It takes forever to cure when applied on its own and doesn't create much of a seamless "coating" like shellac (or poly, resin, laquer, etc.). Also, BLO is supposedly susceptible to spontaneous combustion as it heats when curing. Hence throwing away BLO-soaked rags is always fun--(I let them dry out on concrete and hope they don't catch fire!).
The DNA in OBSJ/Frenchies is just the medium for the BLO and Shellac to mix so that application goes on smooth allowing the BLO to soak in and the shellac to spread evenly on the surface. Then the finish cures quickly as the DNA evaporates leaving a relatively quick-drying, glossy surface. Since Frenchie's is heavier on shellac, it builds a thicker shell/polishable layer with less BLO compared to OBSJ, but it still dries quickly b/c of the DNA component of the mix is the same. When applying on the lathe, the heavier/thicker portion of shellac will "build" more and provide a thicker/glossier (longer-lasting) finish than OBSJ. I'm sure Frenchie's is named after French Polish which is a super labor intensive application of MANY layers of shellac and very small amounts of oil via a cotton-stuffed wad of cheese-cloth resulting in an incredibly lustrous finish...
Anyway, that and $1 will buy you a pack of gum. :) Nice piece as always!
