I have never carved anything before but I am going to try this. My Dad learned to carve as 2nd mate on a cargo ship that ran steel on the Great Lakes. He could take a block of wood and whittle a ship that he would put in a bottle. I want to do that some day. :)
I hope neither of you take this the wrong way, but your style of figures, especially this Santa and the 4” fisherman are my favorite. But, Doug Linker’s teaching/video style is my favorite. It really doesn’t matter so much how it looks. Mine looked awful first when I started. I just kept doing it and they gradually got a little better. Just practice lots and they will get much better in time

Love the carving. I watched your video to see how to carve the eyes. However, from that point on most of your carving was out of the frame and all we could see was your right hand. Here’s a suggestion. Put you a dot or mark on the table and keep your carving over at center point so it stays in the view of the camera.

Hi Kevin! As a fellow woodcarver since I was 13 (now 65), I truly appreciate all of your videos! I wanted to share a few tips on painting that I learned while attending the Geisler-Moroder School of Woodcarving in Elbigenalp; Austria. www.woodcarvingschool.com/ 1) Use standard watercolor paints (children's paints will do), toned down with a bit of water-base brown stain. This gets rid of the stark bright colors, and creates a more antique or old look. 2) Paint one section at a time (arm, leg, pant, shoe, etc.), and then wipe some of the paint off with a damp cloth, allowing the darker tone to remain in the creases and cracks, creating a shadow affect. 3)When the carving is completely painted and wiped with a damp cloth, use 000 steel wool over the entire carving. 4) Finish with a paste wax, and allow it to dry adequately before buffing.
I just discovered your site. Beautiful work. I do wish you spent 20 seconds or so at video's end to show off the finished piece. It would allow me time to really take it all in. The thumbnails are too small for these old eyes.

Great video could you slow down when you look at your work for a second or two to give us enough time to see what you just cut away. Everything is so fast , as a novice it's hard to follow along especially when you cut the nose and eyes also as your carving you drop below the camera and we can't see what was just carved. I'm learning alot from your videos I just wish I could take some classes. Thanks for teaching us newbies.

I’ve never soaked any pine. I have carved some that I had the same problem with. My knife would dull very quickly but for the most part I find the white pine pretty decent to carve
This is fine for a Novice to try. You may not carve it the same as someone who has been carving for years but it’s all about the practice. The more you do it the better you will get
I've seen him say before he goes to Lowes for pine, but I haven't seen him specify what he's buying exactly. His pine is probably not the same as mine or yours.
I get the most of my customers either ordering through a message on Facebook or to my email. The thing is, I’m so blocked up with orders now for Christmas I can’t take anymore till after Christmas
With these little characters I put the face about 1/3 of body size. This works for me and my customers seem fine with it. I had to stop taking orders two weeks ago for Christmas,

Thanks John. I carve all day most everyday. This time of the year when the weather gets cold my hands get dry. It gets to the point where they crack and get really sore.
Thanks Tracy. The very first carving I did I carved it from Jack pine. It was tough nails. The white pine I’m using is pretty soft for the most part. Some is like butter to cut. It’s all I used for the past few years.
