So happy to see you two have decided to react to this show. Lucifer, infact is a character from this universe. The creator is Neil Gaiman. Fun fact : the sleep epidemic described at the beginning is a real event, an outbreak of Encephalitis Lethargic that coincided with the Flu after WW1. It has infected roughly a million people and is the subject of the film "Awakenings" Tom Sturridge does an amazing job as Dream.
I was super impressed with how Tom managed to make his voice sound so solid, mournful and softly intense. He knew his assigment and did not disappoint.
@@susanzenonian5085 I remember an interview with Neil and Tom. Neil said to stop whispering like Batman. Tom said it was his first day. Funny thing is Robert Pattinson is his best mate and they've known each other since they were 13. In LA pilot season a group of British actors/friends Tom Sturridge, Robert Pattinson, Eddie Redmayne, Charlie Cox, Jamie Dornan and Andrew Garfield.
You’re going to love this series. It is gorgeously filmed, 11 episodes. Lucifer, the show you just finished is a reinterpretation of the Lucifer character in The Sandman. The comics were written by Neil Gaiman. You saw his name in the Lucifer credits. He also narrated the last episode of S3 of Lucifer, the alternate reality episode. In the comics, Lucifer’s look was based on David Bowie. In the Lucifer episode with the Satan worshipers, after Lucifer introduces himself, the guy says “I thought you’re supposed to be blonde” which was a nod the The Sandman Lucifer. Neil Gaiman also co-wrote Good Omens. Another good show if you haven’t watched it yet. Both Good Omens and The Sandman are getting second seasons.
Read this comic in the 80s, been waiting for a live version for 35 years. IMO, this live show manages to be EVEN BETTER than the comic in almost every respect. And SO thrilled it's going to get at least one more season.
Thank you for reacting to this great show, Dream was captive for 100 years. In the comics Dream punished Alex with eternal waking :a dream in which he kept waking up from one nightmare to another
Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. His way of storytelling is so compelling, no matter what he pens. (His books span the whole spectrum from children's stories to horror and all points in between.) Many of his works have been adapted before this, and adapted well. I do recommend reading The Sandman graphic novels if this series piques your interest.
Same here...now I can't remember everything...I HATED what they did to Luci...but I understand completely why. Tom Ellis was physically nothing like the comics. But I never read them...but I can appreciate the connection but STILL...it's weird.
@@andidreyes5323 tom ellis' lucifer also comes from much further along the storyline than the one in this show, which is why he acts so different from the jump
In the comics, it's explained that there is a God, who created all of reality, but there are also gods, who are manifestations of the collective conscious of living beings. The Endless are fundamental forces to the human condition: all living things have a destiny, all living things will die, all living things dream of something better or worse, all living things destroy to create, all living things desire and despair, all living things are delightful and delirious. When the first organism was brought to life by God, the Endless were brought into existence, and only when the last living thing dies will they cease to be. He also cursed Alex with 'Endless Waking', in which he would dream that he'd wake up from a nightmare only to realize that he was in a different nightmare.
I have to say, I love that Gaiman draws in a real world element with the Sleepy Sickness. To this day, they don't know what caused it. You're right about people going insane from not sleeping. It's an awful, slow sort of death. It's amazing how fragile the back of the head is. Hitting tempered glass like that would break open the back far too easy. Morpheus/Dream wouldn't have gone after Paul for one reason: Paul asked for nothing and freed Dream without condition, even though he knew there could be consequences.
This one caught me by surprise. I'd heard of the comic but never got to it, figured I'd give this a shot to see if it was interesting and enjoyed it quite a bit. A lot of interesting concepts all executed really well on a technical level.
Oh yaaaay! This is awesome... I wasn't expecting it, but I was also kinda hoping you would. And you did! You boys are in for quite a ride with this one, for sure! It's an entirely different kind of storytelling & I'm really glad y'all decided to check it out 🤗 (...can't wait for the next uploads!)
A woman is playing Lucifer but it is the same Lucifer you watched but the Lucifer series was loosely based on the DC comics character. The Sandman comic is where DC introduced Lucifer. I believe you guys will really enjoy this show. Keep in mind it is not a Lucifer series so he is not in every episode. In the Sandman comics Lucifer was modeled after David Bowie during his androgynous phase so Lucifer looked like a woman.
Gwendolyn Christie and Tom Ellis are literally playing the same character. The reason why Lucifer in "Lucifer" escaped to Los Angeles was because of events that happened in the Sandman comic.
I'm happy to see you reacting to this! It is more dramatic and less humourous than Lucifer, though it does have humour - the tone really changes a lot between the epsiodes. Looking forward to follow you on this!
Steve is right they are part of the same universe, the DC Comics universe. The Sandman was a DC comic started in 1989. There we well known DC characters that appeared in the comics but the show is distances itself from those characters. There was a spin off Lucifer comic book by DC's Vertigo imprint which is what the Lucifer TV show is very very loosely based on but the TV show is much lighter in tone. So it's kind of the same character played by a different actor. The story starts in 1916 because the was the year the Sleepy Sickness started in real life.
The “greater than Gods” is an idea Gaiman also explored in American Gods, that Gods get power and authority from believers, and that without them, they can fade and die. The Endless are endless because they exist, even if no one knows anything g about them.
Yaaaay! I’m so happy you’re covering this. Also, can I request Interview with the Vampire? It’s only 7 episodes and up there with House of the Dragon as best shows of 2022 for me.
the endless are more than gods in the way that gods get their power from belief whereas the endless exist whether people “know” about them or not. how can you kill the personification of a thing? you can’t. show me someone who claims they can kill the personification of death or destiny and i’ll show you a liar lmao. oh and there’s 7 of them by the way, 7 endless siblings all with names that begin with d. dream is the 3rd oldest. i mentioned a few and so did the corinthian…
The Endless are more powerful than gods in that they are anthropomorphic personifications of forces of nature or ideas. Their parents were literally Time and Night. If one dies, they will be replaced by another because they must exist in one form or another. Its…alot if you haven’t read the comics😅 but yes. They’re pretty powerful
When finishing The Sandman, I hope you guys will react to "Kingdom" It's Netflix original Kdrama about a zombie apocalypse set during the 1600s. It's just as good as Train to Busan.
Great series!! And it was renewed for a serving season 🎉🎉🎉 John, please please MAKE Steve watch GoT!! I’ll even settle for HotD since I’m nice like that 🫣

This casting is SO good. Even Gaiman said they wanted Bowie, but since he was dead, she was very much the top of their list of people to play Lucifer.
