Hewy Toonmore I honestly found the Spielberg one pretty terrible/generic, except for the BFG himself. The animated one, though, is an underrated diamond of entertainment!
Roald Dahl would have been impressed by Steven Spielberg's The BFG starring Sir Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant and Ruby Barnhill as Sophie with the musical score composed by John Williams even more and given it the thumbs up.
Steven Spielberg and John Williams were meant to reunite to bring The BFG to life on the Big Screen, because Spielberg made us feel like a child again with E.T., he brought the adventurer in us with Indiana Jones and his search of Acheological artifacts like The Lost Ark, The Holy Grail and the Crystal Skull, he unleashed Dinosaurs from the pages of Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, he abollished slavery in Lincoln and made us fear man-eating sharks in Jaws and sent the Martians to invade the planet in H.G.Wells The War Of The Worlds, he sent Optimus Prime and the Autobots into battle against the Decepticons on Earth in his production of Transformers and Herge's famous boy journalist and his drunken sailor sidekick to go after Red Rackhams Treasure in Tintin And The Secret Of The Unicorn. Now he has brought Roald Dahl's weird and whimsical world of The BFG to life on the Big Screen.
Well I don't think I've seen him this excited for a film he picked out of the hat, I think it will get the seal of approval as well, if you remember with his top 10 Disney films he mentioned it as one of his favourite animated comedies
I LOVED the 2016 version! I'll admit i only saw this film as a time killer while i was stuck in the hell hole that's the state of new mexico but this was a lovely pleasant surprise. It really harkins back to Spielberg's family films of the 80s and it's just so full of that wonder. Mark Rylance does a great job as the titular giant and the rest of the film has that quality, quirkiness and charm you expect out of a roald dahl story, huge props to the late Melissa Matheson. It really put a smile on my face in a time i was very unhappy. It's big gigantic fun for everyone!

Shrek The Third could've been a good film, probably better than Shrek 2 if they did this: Added more songs. Made Artie stronger. Added more new characters. Have Artie and Prince Charming fight at the end as the Princesses sing, giving it a awesome and musical climax. (Artie and Prince Charming could've fought as the Princesses sing, and then Artie uses his sword to break Shrek free of the chains and the two of them fight Prince Charming together.) Added at least one musical number. Made the Princesses funnier and more active. Gave Puss in Boots and Donkey a better storyline, like instead of Merlin accidentally switching their bodies, he could've caused them to turn human, so Puss in boots and Donkey would talk like themselves but in a human body. Made Lancelot a bigger character, maybe he could've joined forces with Prince Charming to fight Artie at the end, so it could've been a battle between Shrek/ Artie and Prince Charming/Lancelot. Had a dance party ending at the theatre where the play took place. And when the dance party settles down, they show a clip of Fiona holding the new babies at their swamp. Made the high school more creative. Added more Disney references. Instead of having Merlin transfer them back to Far Far Away, have the fairy tale creatures (Pinocchio, Gingy, Little pigs) fly Dragon to Merlin's camp and rescue Shrek, Artie, Donkey, and Puss in boots, but Dragon gets attacked causing them to fall off and hide from guards. Have funnier moments, like when Shrek is trying to relate to Artie by talking like a teenager, Donkey can beat box and everything turns into a music video as Shrek raps and Puss can sing some Spanish song, then Artie yells "Enough!".
We read the book in school when I was 12, I saw the animated movie about 3 or 4 years ago when I thought about reading it again but found out the movie existed. I do have to say that a lot of the visuals in the animated one did match up to how I imagined it when reading the book. Not exactly but just some of the things looked a lot like how I remembered it. Granted, I was a lot younger when the book was read so by that point my memory was faded & only thing I'd have to recall exactly what I imagined would be the drawings I did when reading it. Sadly, I don't have them anymore. Still, it was a nice revisit when I saw the movie & I wasn't sure if I would like it when I started watching but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the movie almost more than the book.
I love both The BFG movies. But the animated one is both hands down the real source material thing. I do like Steven Spielberg's BFG, but the nine giants weren't even ugly as the book describes them and I really did love Ruby's performance as Sophie.
From executive producers Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall, the creators of Dangermouse..... and the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ...... an adventure as big and as friendly as anything else on Earth!
Steven Spielberg did such a magnificent job on The BFG and I think that if Roald Dahl was alive today to have seen the 2016 adaptation he would given Steven Spielberg, Sir Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill and John Williams the thumbs up.
Great review, AniMat! Ironically enough, while you had some problems with the 2016 BFG, I had the exact opposite, in that I really enjoyed it! I actually found the evil giants to be some of the best parts of the film! My favourite was Jermaine Clement as the Fleshlumpeater, as he just oozed evilness and just had such fun with it. In fact, I'd actually be interested in seeing him again in a sequel, maybe getting some revenge on BFG and his friends. However, I can understand why you would like the original. Looking forward to Road to El Dorado for the next review! Keep up the great videos!
@@dtaylor4552, While that would be good, at this point I don't really believe there WILL be another Tintin movie. The last time it was brought up with Spielberg was in March of 2018! Until there's something specific out, I won't really believe there will be any sequel for the foreseeable future.
Who here wants to see Animat try to review Hetalia Paint it White? I want him to review it and get confused by absolutely everything. I've watched it 3 times and still have no idea what half the things in that movie are
What Spielburg completely got wrong in his movie was failing to make the evil giants frightening, they're supposed to be menacing, deadly threats to the human children, and serious bullies to the BFG. The animation got that across well.
In Roald Dahl's original book the Giants were all cowardly bullies and the BFG was always getting picked on. Roald Dahl based the Giants on the memories of his school days where he was also getting bullied.
Finally he's gonna review The Road To El Dorado. I sent him an email asking to review that film TWO YEARS ago on February 14, 2015!! Next, I'm gonna send an email asking him to review Shrek The Third and Shrek.

Wow there must be a lot of films in the animation hat then! I'm hoping he'll pull out at least one of my requests sometime next year. I've made 5 requests via e-mail (one 1 month ago which is an animated adaptation of a Croatian folktale called Lapitch the Little Shoemaker which I honestly haven't seen but am curious about from looking on Google and no one else on TH-cam has reviewed it as of yet) and 4 2 months ago-Tom and Jerry THe Movie, Ratatouille, An American Tail and Fievel Goes West)
Hey, The BFG was my request, I think it took over a year for him to pick it out of the hat but it was well worth it for that feeling of responsibility of a video from someone like AniMat, if you know what I mean
the animation in some aspects look like the ranken/bass hobbit mostly the gaints look like the trolls/goblins. while kinda looking ugly, the ugly-ness really highly how evil and twisted they are. Queen Elizabeth, looks uncanny almost like a hand drawn version of what she really looked like. With out even highlighting who she is, just by looking at her you know that's the queen.
I finally got around to watching the Steven Speilberg Film Adaptation of The BFG. The visual effects were good and the girl who played Sophie did a fantastic job. But that's about it. The Giants weren't terrifying or didn't even seem dangerous compared to the 1989 version. And as for The Big Friendly Giant himself. David Jason's had a real warmth and fun eccentric enjoyably to him. Mark Rylance did a good job. But he lacked the warmth and well friendliness that David Jason projected.
I the original book the BFG was always being picked on because he was the smaller than that of his bullying counterparts. The Giants in Roald Dahl's book were based on the similar sort of treatment Roald Dahl recieved when he went to school.

Fans of old school british comedy should have a look beside the national treasure that is david jason the maid is played by mrs slocombe the army general is the old major from fawlty towers and the air force is the bumbling captain ashwood from IAHHM,
If Roald Dahl was alive today to have seen the 2016 adaptation of The BFG he would have given Steven Spielberg, Sir Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill and John Williams the thumbs up.

Cosgrove Hall's BFG was superior because it has Sir David Jason as the BFG! What a total legend! I've never seen a bad thing he's done. It seems impossible! A lot of the animation seemed pretty groundbreaking for the time, especially considering Cosgrove Hall had never done anything like it before.
I actually loved Mark Reliance as the Giant in Spielberg's version. He played Rudolf the accused Spy in Spielberg's BFG, which I thought was a great character and really deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Character. Screw Sylvester Stallone, Mark Rylance all the way XD
EXACTLY. I got bored and fell asleep watching the live action version, it was trash! They original is much better and the giants scared the crap out of me as a child.
@@dtaylor4552 That i can see. From what i have been told, Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka was more like the Willy Wonka in the books than Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka was.
i personally think that books should not have live action adaptations.... well this was a book, went to a cartoon, and then they ruined it by making it live action!
If Roald Dahl hates Willy Wonka, then I wonder what his reaction was to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... And even with its flaws, I did enjoy the live-action BFG. Even if it was admittedly disappointing, especially coming from Steven Spielberg.
Considering he died a decade before the latest Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie was made, I doubt he had any reaction to it whatsoever. But the family approved of the film, claiming it was closer to the vision of Roald Dahl.
Road to El Dorado is the next classic review!

finally
yep that too
After seeing Spielberg's BFG, while I did like it, I have to admit that the animated adaptation is the superior version. :)
same
Hewy Toonmore I honestly found the Spielberg one pretty terrible/generic, except for the BFG himself. The animated one, though, is an underrated diamond of entertainment!
I personally liked both equally.
The Spielberg version is currently one of my favorite films of the year so far.
I hope he'll consider reviewing the animated adaptation of "REvolting Rhymes" one day.
I take it no Wiz Popper song?
So the Road to El Dorado is the next AniMat's Classic Review?
No wonder he said he just struck gold! That movie was AMAZING!
I love David Jason as the BFG and it's cool to know that he loved the movie so much he named his own daughter Sophie.
Roald Dahl would have been impressed by Steven Spielberg's The BFG starring Sir Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant and Ruby Barnhill as Sophie with the musical score composed by John Williams even more and given it the thumbs up.
Yeah right.
I'm so happy for you! Hope you have a great time reviewing the next film!
Yes! The Road to El Dorado is next!
I like Spielberg's version fine, but this one in my opinion is the more superior adaptation.
Steven Spielberg and John Williams were meant to reunite to bring The BFG to life on the Big Screen, because Spielberg made us feel like a child again with E.T.,

It's no secret that Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors. I'm glad this film earned our approval despite it being under appreciated.
Yay! The Road to El Dorado is Next! I find it funny seeing AniMat excited at the same as I was. I'm guessing either a 7 or 8 out of 10.
Pay up.
I actually think it'll get the Animat's seal of approval
Well I don't think I've seen him this excited for a film he picked out of the hat, I think it will get the seal of approval as well, if you remember with his top 10 Disney films he mentioned it as one of his favourite animated comedies
Nope 10 out of 10!

This was my favourite movie ever as a child I remember I stayed up really late one night to watch the movie over and over
This movie is my childhood and I love it allot
I liked the BFG movie by Steven Spielberg. Others don't, but I did
Bsword640, I agree
Mr.Coat would agree. Don't be surprised if you see it in his top ten of 2016.
Alex Klepp, who is Mr. Coat?
I thought it was fine also.
I liked it as well :)
The BFG, oh yeah I definitely love that delighted adaptation of it. Best animated feature I've watched a lot of times.
YES ROAD TO EL DORADO IS NEXT!!!!!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH!!!!! I SQUEALED WHEN I HEARD THE SONG
'Roald Dull'
The BFG is one of my favorite animated movies of all time, It's up there with Kung Fu Panda and The Fox and the Hound!
I've read Roalds deal with Whily Wonka was over disputes over the writer of the movie as he originally wrote the script but his version was ignored and he hated many of the changes to it. He was also vocal about Gene Wilder casting, when his perfered choice was Spike Milligan.
Next review is going to be AWESOME.
Shrek The Third could've been a good film, probably better than Shrek 2 if they did this:

That's a very good analysis, but does that have to do with this video?
This is great and all. But this vid is about the animated BFG movie, not Shrek the Third.
I remember watching this film when I was young, a classic.:)
I am so happy about the next review.
Aren't we all?
As soon as I heard the music I started grinning. THE TIME HAS COME
I haven't seen the animated movie, but I will say the live action movie is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine.
I have seen both versions. Yeah, i can agree with it being a guilty pleasure movie as well.
i saw this in third grade, so i cant really remember much, but i will always love it!

you're not just whistling dixy bub.
I love that version and "The BFG" is my favorite book from Dahl. An American Tail for the next classic review, please!

anthony green Sure...What does that have to do with ym comment though?
tripp cory no was just curious and wanted mess with you 😎
This is my favourite movie of all time
Finally!!! I've been hoping for a hand-drawn Dreamworks film for so long!!!
This isn't a DreamWorks movie.

Tino 2008 What about Shrek 2? Definitely the best film out of them all.
Kayora Manaka Yes, Shrek 2 is the best, but it's better when he reviews bad films, that's why I asked for Shrek The Third.
Tino 2008 True. The only Shrek film I think he reviewed was Shrek Forever After, or the 4th Shrek movie, which was just okay.

he brought the adventurer in us with Indiana Jones and his search of The Lost Ark, he unleashed Dinosaurs from the pages of Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, he abollished slavery in Lincoln and made us fear man-eating sharks in Jaws and sent the Martians to invade the planet in H.G.Wells The War Of The Worlds, he sent Optimus Prime and the Autobots into battle against the Decepticons on Earth in his production of Transformers and Herge's famous boy journalist and his drunken sailor sidekick to go after Red Rackhams Treasure in Tintin And The Secret Of The Unicorn. Now he has brought Roald Dahl's weird and whimsical world of The BFG to life on the Big Screen.
Coming Up Next for Animat's Classic Reviews: The Road to El Dorado!
I first saw this movie on the Disney Channel when they showed a good portion of films that were NOT made by Disney.
She’s missing eye lashes that would have instantly made her look more “girly”.
Fans of old school british comedy should have a look beside the national treasure that is david jason the maid is played by mrs slocombe the army general is the old major from fawlty towers and the air force is the bumbling captain ashwood from IAHHM,
Every time I see The BFG, I instantly think of The BFG 9000 from doom
A philosophical masterpiece.

oh this is gonna be a good one!
Wow.
Can you also review the 2016 BFG movie by Spielberg
What about the Disney bfg
If Roald Dahl was alive today to have seen the 2016 adaptation of The BFG he would have given Steven Spielberg, Sir Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill and John Williams the thumbs up.
I've read the book.
I haven't. How was it?
Better than the live action version.
Steven Spielberg and John Williams were meant to reunite to bring The BFG to life on the Big Screen, because Spielberg made us feel like a child again with E.T.,
he brought the adventurer in us with Indiana Jones and his search of Archaeological artifacts like The Lost Ark, The Holy Grail and the Crystal Skull, he unleashed Dinosaurs from the pages of Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, he abollished slavery in Lincoln and made us fear man-eating sharks in Jaws and sent the Martians to invade the planet in H.G.Wells The War Of The Worlds, he sent Optimus Prime and the Autobots into battle against the Decepticons on Earth in his production of Transformers and Herge's famous boy journalist and his drunken sailor sidekick to go after Red Rackhams Treasure in Tintin And The Secret Of The Unicorn. Now he has brought Roald Dahl's weird and whimsical world of The BFG to life on the Big Screen.
Yes Mark Rylance portrayed a believable character in Steven Spielberg's adaptaion of The BFG.
This is the definitive BFG film, so much better than the Spielberg version.
Actually if Roald Dahl was still alive today, he would beg to differ, because he would have given Steven Spielberg and John Williams the thumbs up.
EXACTLY. I got bored and fell asleep watching the live action version, it was trash! They original is much better and the giants scared the crap out of me as a child.
Shut up. How would you know what he would approve of? He's DEAD.
@@hotties3v3n Because he would have approved of Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp if he was still alive today.
@@dtaylor4552 That i can see. From what i have been told, Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka was more like the Willy Wonka in the books than Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka was.
Sophie looks like me
i personally think that books should not have live action adaptations.... well this was a book, went to a cartoon, and then they ruined it by making it live action!
What happened? Why did you delete this video nearly an hour ago?
Audio problems
There was no background music.
They really should've read named this movie in the new version. It looks like the abbreviation says big fucking giant
8:28
8:23 8:25 8:27
please do a classic review Beavis and Butt-Head Do America because you all already did the south park and Simpsons movie
What company animated this film?
Cosgrove hall.
I have not seen the animated BFG, but I thought the live action one was ok
Steven Spielberg was meant to bring Roald Dahl's The BFG to life on the Big Screen.
@@dtaylor4552 And now that version is 5 years old.
Dreamworks Eldorado i take it is next im mean he struck gold and the music gave it away mabey im wroung but thats my guess
If Roald Dahl hates Willy Wonka, then I wonder what his reaction was to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...
And even with its flaws, I did enjoy the live-action BFG. Even if it was admittedly disappointing, especially coming from Steven Spielberg.
Kayora Manaka It's like EB White hating the Hanna Barbera version of Charlotte's Web.
Considering he died a decade before the latest Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie was made, I doubt he had any reaction to it whatsoever. But the family approved of the film, claiming it was closer to the vision of Roald Dahl.
+Menchi Guevarra he mainly just hated the songs.
ElectricDragon505 can review The Swan Princess and Atlantis Journey To The Lost Kingdom.
The Big Fucking Gun.
I grew with this film.
Because I'm British
