    When browsing for books to read, I always look for book reviews. The Poppy War is a fantasy/historical fiction novel by RF Kuang. The Burning Good being such a popular book release and one of my most anticipated fall book release, I had to do a reading vlog where you see all of my live reactions to the ENTIRE trilogy. Not going to lie, I lost my mind halfway through, lost my train of thought and shed one too many tears over this novel. Booktube has buzzed about these books… Let’s see if I’ll enjoy them. I hope you guys enjoy this one and come out with one more book to add to your TBR and some good book recommendations for 2020! Thank you so much to Harper Voyager for sending the ARC my way and making my day!!

    I really appreciate you suggesting people educate themselves and read a book like The Rape of Nanking as well. Everyone mentions that The Poppy War is based on real events, but I haven't seen anyone else take the time to recommend a book for them to actually learn about those real events

    I picked up the dragon king in a store without knowing it had graphic scenes or a first book, got the first book and made myself miserable reading it. I was not prepared at all for it. But it brought out so many topics I’d never ventured into, the trilogy was a rude awakening to what war truly is. But i would still go back and read it again if i was given the chance, the way rin is written to be so different from the most mcs and how she’s able to fail and still be able to get back up, how she fucks up and no one sugar coats it, rin is someone that rarely ever exists in the fantasy world, and i adore her so much for it.
    (As someone who has always read about fmc crying about losing their ability to give birth, her choosing to give it up with no questions to attain glory was the best part of it all) i loved it so much!!!

    • @MelReads
      @MelReads  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely not for everyone but it's such a great trilogy!! I'm not big on war books either, and I rarely pick up an adult fantasy but it was worth every second imo🙌🏻

    • @kimxni_

      @@MelReads see I LOVE adult fantasy but it’s just the war part that’s holding me back

    • @dishadharmraj6986
      @dishadharmraj6986 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kimxni_ hey! I love high fanatsy and war books generally are not my cup of tea either. But the way She writes it doesn't feel like a war book of that makes sense. Like a lot of times it's they attacked we did this they did that bla bla. But in the dragon republic the characters are so rich and it so many other things that it doesn't feel like a war story.
      In poppy war the war bit was not as good as it was in tdr but it still has very good story telling so I definitely thing you I should give this book a try.

It is so well written, so brutal, makes you think so freaking much and the plot twists just 🤌🏼 are just amazing (and heartbreaking 💔). Cant wait to read the Burning God (altho i might need to go read some light cozy book in between to recover).😅

    I want to comment on the Poppy War. (spoilers) I wanted to like this one, but there are just too many flaws. Most conspicuous is the fact that it is simply a flat retelling of the sino-japanese war/ww2 (37-45) and should be only vaguely categorized as fantasy. Anyone with a basic insight in Chinese history and culture would have their immersion in the story broken by the introduction of real life people such as Mengzi, Confucious, Sunzi and so on in a fantasy story. Imagine Shakespeare and his work turning up in Lord of the Rings. It has copied events directly from the three kingdoms red cliff and presents it as something original. Also did I mention that Sun Wukong And Zhu Bajie shows up? The story is simply not very original and on top of that has a main character who becomes more and more unlikeable as the story progresses (hopefully intentional on the part of the author). However the most problematic thing about his book is that it portrays not-japan as really evil without giving a reason as to why not-japan is like that. By copying the events of the sino-japanese war, but not everything that leads up to it in history, it makes not-japan seem like Sauron (no reason to be evil), and that is dangerous because not-japan and not-China is not just random fantasy countries, but the story is a direct retelling of the war

    Honestly the trilogy was never able to make me cry or care personally for the characters despite really liking some more (like Venka) and some less. But I never sighed for it anyway. If i wanted emotional drama I would have read some romance or romantic classics or something. When it comes to storyline and world building though it was not bad at all. The second part of the first book was so fast suddenly after the first 150 pages that i even considered not reading The Dragon Republic... I ended up doing so though and I do not really regret it. It is not the best book, sure, it is the authors first and really ambitious project as far as i know but it is definitely worth giving it a try.
    It was... kind of predictable at a lot of moments especially when it comes to the third book and some things and themes started to also repeat each other too much as times goes on but it does not mean it is not an interesting origin story. The character development is there... just not the best one I would say. It is like the author thought that there is just one way, that one reason is enough for a decision and all... and it is probably because our protagonist is really straightforward and direct and let's face it... stupid (I was especially annoyed with broading Kitay at the third book for his intelligence all the time just because he was almost useless during the last two books and it felt like the book was shoving "he is smart" in your face through the excuse of Rin seeing him this way) but whatever.
    It is not a bad book and i would say everyone can find something to like in it (not including the ones searching for romance) but not everyone will be that willing to make compromises with everything else that annoys them. 3.5/4 from 5 by me/.
    The poppy war - more philosophical. First part is chill and the second incredibly fast with something new happening in every 2 pages (or at least that is what i remember left as my first impression). The Dragon Republic... eh, i have no real idea, a lot more psychological... or at least more than The Burning God... which is more of a documentary than anything else as it is probably the book with least philosophy and psychological elements instead focusing on action and politics a lot more than the pervious ones.
    By the way... as a person interested in history and history novels although not chinese... please, just... do not expect or call it history book in any way. Nothing against it... just, better read actually Chinese history books. This one is fantasy about war
