Same story different year, basically what happend with Anthem and similar live services that had no business being made by studios who specialize in single player games and whose leadership could not properly provide a clear vision and manage the scope of their ambitions.

When will companies realize the best way to make money off of a video game is to just make a good video game
Nah takes too much time and money 🥱
Because they still make a lot of money WITHOUT making good games, look at EA, Ubisoft, etc, and how they are still making money, a lot of money, with mid to awful games
To be slightly fair games are starting to get more expensive and as long as the games are super good live service multiplayer is perfectly fine. Even dlc for single player is fine too but it has to be more than just a small amount of things
@@sneakysnail9225This is one of the examples where money and backing was put towards it though.
Sadly this isn't true. Call Of Duty, the EA sports games, and Destiny 2 all prove that you can make so much money off of abhorrently bad abominations that should have legal action taken against them.
I love how the vast majority of people called this game being DOA months if not years before it came out. It doesn't take a Nostradamus to know if something is fucking shit.
Now when will Forza Motorsport be Jason Schreier'd? I really want to know what the hell happened given that that game was in development for six years.
This. EVERYONE on the planet who isn't a C-Suite manager or large corporate shareholder knew this game was DOA. The only people who are clueless about how it happened are manager class enjoyers of a fraudulent system who pretend expertise but are really just throwing shit against a wall to see what sticks.
"When every game is a live service , no game will live"
But don’t forget that Helldivers 2 was a live service done right.
@GHOSTSTARSCREAM True it might not last but they did enjoyed playing the game.
@GHOSTSTARSCREAM Should probably change the comment to "no game will live...forever"
I'M GLAD IT FLOPPED! There, I said it.
I don't wish devs any ill will and job loss but when companies push for shitty games to be made, I'm glad the gaming community responds in kind. From the legendary Arkham series to Suicide Squad. Seriously, WTF... I'm glad they got put in their place for fucking with us ;)
I get the sentiment, but the problem with that is the out of touch corporate execs ad WB that made the initial stupid decisions get to laugh their way to the bank.
@@solblackguy...For now.
Do enough stuff like this and the cash will go away too!😡
No one cares about people, be a dev or any other profession. We are here to do a job and we have to do a good job in order to achieve success, that's how the world should work. It's actually not personal, is just business
I mean...WB has doubled down on live service games after this mess so the only people who lose here are the devs who lost their jobs due to this flopping :/
@senormarston yep, and they did a terrible job with this game idea.
You don't gotta be a detective to know why it crashed lol. Live servive, repetitive gameplay, and a story that just completely disrespects iconic characters especially an iconic character we had a first hand connection with.
My biggest peeve is everyone kept saying that that the og devs left and that's why the game was so bad but it's because of OG directors like Hill who pushed for these decisions
Spoiler Alert for "Character with First Hand Connection" it is Batman.
I have been a Batman fan for about 30 years. While I can see where you're coming from . For me personally if there is great gameplay and a good story I am more than willing to give it a try. It is why I gave Gotham Knights a try. I am a fan of both Red Hood and Batgirl so I gave it a go . The combat wasn't as smooth and the story wasn't that bad however I actually enjoyed the game but this is just not it. Not to mention it is a live service . I gave it a pass and it looks like it was the right choice.
This won't sit well with the 95 steam players!
"Live service, repetitive gameplay"
I can see where you're coming from, and I agree to a degree, but as a player of MMOs I don't like how live service and "repetitive gameplay" is thrown around as terms and flags for a failing game. The latter can definitely work assuming the gameplay is fun and rewarding in the long run as it helps players stay invested in a satisfactory and enjoyable way, and this helps with games using a live service model to keep it up and running. With Suicide Squad's problem though is that it is just a typical shoot'em ups game decorated with a thin DC paintjob. I'm sure the game is fun for the more average/casual gamer, but for those hard into the DC franchise it is nothing but jarring if not painful.
I wish parent companies would stop forcing studios to go outside their strengths to make something soulless then blame the studio rather than their idiotic choices. Arcane and BioWare are also victims of this.
arkane and bioware sold themselves to their now parent companies. they are legally separate subsidiaries for a reason and not divisions
What about CDPR? The terrible launch of Cyberpunk led to a high turnover of staff?
Seeing people that realize this in the sea of morons calling for the heads of a consulting firm with a shitty name gives me hope.
If a studio is passionate about it, and gets to do their thing, then going outside of what they're used to, can lead to success, but it's more often not going to happen.
We can also look forward to the new Fable being developed by a team that has mostly only made arcade racing games, and are now making a fantasy rpg.
the devs of alien isolation had never made a game like it before, and its widely considered not only the best alien game ever made, but one of the best horror games ever made. going outside your comfort zone can pay off, if you are willing and have the talent/skill to overcome the hurdles involved
I already own 500 games, around 300 of them I've never even played yet. Why would I want to spend all my hours playing a "live service" game? A game with no beginning middle or end, that continuously demands more money and dedication to grind up and does absolutely nothing better than at least 50 of the games in my library? Just getting me to buy another game AT ALL is a hard sell, but an infinite hour and money pit is a hard NO.
I know what that like
I’m pretty skip on all live service games. It’s not fun, it’s a part time job. Where u have pay out.
Only live service game I play is helldivers 2 and the division 2. And i can play that whenever i want.
If you didn't played 300 of them, why are you buying them in the first place? Consumerism at its worst...
@@rayman1900 - Perhaps they're a video game collector?
Likely next news title: "Suicide Squad Killed Rocksteady Studio."
More like WB’s management I feel cause you can sense they wanna really maximise profits but I’m not sure it actually really works cause you’re effecting the quality and it’s not good in the long run cause you’re alienating people. With Shadow of War for example, they implemented things that rubbed people the wrong way and it effected how the game was received as well as sales.
If any of you want to feel sad just look at Project Sabbath's concept art of what could've been.
Most of the big names at Rocksteady jumped ship and made their own studio. Hope they pump some good games out without having to deal with WB's nonsense.
@@solblackguy They already are since they are pitching a new single player game.
They are walking dead and they lol know it
And you know who gets punished for a project failure? the Devs who cant speak out against upper management. They lose their jobs and such, while all the non gaming execs spend the weekend in Santorini Greece. Some of em even will get bonuses for laying off the people they didnt listen to.
Thats not true tho. They recruited 90 people for this project.
So those Devs received a salary for years, because of them being greed.
A billion dollar franchise? Are these higher-ups from this planet? How can you be unaware?
These executives only contact with video games is likely poking their head into their kid's bedroom and asking, "are you winning, son?" while they play Fortnite. They probably saw it, thought it looked just like the games their kids play and thought they were going to make so much money.
The producers have no care for what they're producing. They only care for it making them money, and they are not very self aware.
We didn't need an investigation to know this... we all knew exactly how bad it was going to be 6 months before launch. As soon as they showed that gameplay trailer with the terrible UI all the red flags where quite clear, it was a game that should of been delayed and overhauled before it released. This is how the AAA industry dies, with incredibly stubbern publishers who think they're always right no matter how many times they fail. Hogwarts Legacy 2 seems like the next obvious winner but WB is ignoring that to push more live services instead.
It's a shame too, because Hogwart's 2 could be amazing. Fix what was wrong with the first game and then just give us more of all the good stuff. But talks of making it live service have me seriously worried.
I'll admit, if we don't get more Harry Potter content until Rowling either kicks the bucket or stops getting royalties, I won't be complaining.
@@Xoulrath_ I don't know about everyone else, but hearing the words "live service" just instantly deletes all hype I had and makes me wait at least a couple months to see what they tried slipping past the reviewers.
They go for live services for reasons we already know. Publishers want to extend the life of their investments over 10 or more years. They want to be the next GTAV. That's their business meta. They know that they can fail 10 times, but if they make it big once, it pays off tenfold that amount and then some. They will likely not go for HL2 because chasing the elusive pot of gold at the end of a live service makes more sense in business terms. For them, high risk high reward is better than low risk low reward, because they have the money that allows them to brush off a bunch of failed live services. This is all the sad result of consolidation in this industry.
@@sandwichboy1268 Same.
…I never would have guessed. It’s not like the delays, headlines and repeated prior examples could have possibly warned me of this. Truly…. Shocking!
They needed an investigation to figure out why this game failed?
We all know why
We knew since the first trailer so idk why
We need an investigation into why this game was ever made to begin with.

Pretty predictable story every time, no vision, no passion, creating games out of greed and not desire, too much money, too many people with fancy titles sucking up the money, games feel dead and soulless like the people who made it, just checking boxes for what a game should include without it making sense, fitting in or working well together, not caring about the source material in the case of an IP or just what the fans want in general.
Can't even begin to imagine how they squander hundreds of millions and end up with nothing.
Imagine playing a cool game as a teen that inspired you to go to school for coding and design. You struggle but manage to find a dream job as a game dev. Technology has advanced so much between the game you played and now to the point you're fully motivated to make something to surpass that game you played long ago... only to have some corporate fatass tell you to make as many microtransactions as possible for a game where you kill Batman like a sick dog.

I'll never get over YongYea's struggle to say "development" lol. 1:03 watch his tongue.
I love how Jasons report also implies that the reason the game failed was because of Sefton Hill.
Bruh its clear as day, it was WB Executives mandate to turn a single player studio into a live service churning machine.
And my God, dont even get me started on Killing the Batman, the OG Arkham Batman.
This games story was also a complete mess.
Here is what alot of people wont express, i feel as Sefton Hill was purposely trying to botch the game by slow reviews so that WB would shut down the game mid development because as the director of the game he could clearly see that Suicide Squad was going to be garbage. But to Seftons surprise, the WB Executives were amazed and gave overly positive appriase implying how blindsided they were.
So in the end both studio founders left and started their own game studio while also getting any talented developers on their side who were sick of WB as well.
Well yeah, life services are a disease.
and still fortnite makes billions
Rocksteady used to be the pinnacle of superhero games, now it’s just a shell of it’s former self

I dont think people would have bitched as bad if the characters were more unique and you could have melee combat and guns as a switch between the death of batman isnt even a problem for me but i can see why people dont like it i see it as an else world one

Do we REALLY need a report on why it failed? It should be obvious.
Perhaps but a report giving us more info on the internal failures is welcome and helps us learn why these things happen exactly, it also discredits the rager people attacking ordinary devs instead of the failures of the leaders which is good

AND the franchise as a whole is limping along, if not actively dead. RIP Arkham series.
After seeing all the negativity surrounding this game, I’m glad I never got around to purchase or add it to my game library. I feel bad for the developers in the trenches.
The cofounders wanted to make a multiplayer puzzle game? That was their first misstep.
We already knew before this story broke what happened with Suicide Squad? Single player game made into a live service and corporate greed stepping in assuring everything would be totally ok. Lastly this game releases unfinished and WB makes 💰 off deceiving gamers with them think they we're getting a finished product.🤬
It’s always a grievous thing seeing people on stage in business suits talking about video games.
Rocksteady next game should be titled Red Hood: Kill The Suicide Squad
They should have asked ANY gamer if this was a good idea. Even the concept before seeing any footage or gameplay.. everyone told them this is gonna fail. Let take a highly acclaimed series of games made as single player narrative experience.. and totally transform it into a live service multiplayer looter shooter.
You lose all your original audience, that never wanted this. And you also don't appeal to the live service shooter audience.. cause they have bigger, better, and more established games like Destiny 2, warframe, fortnite, take your pick of many games. They took 100's millions of dollars and burned it all, for almost nothing.
Made a lame looter shooter, pissed off your fans, made your fans dislike your company and potentially even ruin the legacy of Rocksteady.. man what a sad waste
I’d be surprised if the studio doesn’t get the axe.
They could've easily just gave deathshot the guy who's known as a gunman diffrent and unique guns and you can even give Harley an uzi or something if they really wanted too but keep boomerang and shark separately
*deadshot*
At this point, game developers are better off just going Indie or just making their own studios instead of working in corporations.
Even I'm smart enough to know why the game failed: Horrible and repetitive gameplay, live service model, a disrespectful send-off to an iconic character in the voice actor's final role before he tragically passed away, battlepass, insane grind, and that's only the things that immediately spring to my mind. AAA trend chasing tends to follow one of two situations:
Indie/smaller game gets popular, they copy it and flood the market with a bunch of 'em until there's too many while acting like they came up with it.

Executives aren't really out of touch. They know what people enjoy and why they enjoy it. They just don't *care*, because that takes effort and investment and planning. They would rather get minimum-viable, pour money into the marketing machine (which...I would not be surprised to learn is them laundering money, honestly) and sit back to profit off of people buying that minimum-viable thing.

"Rocksteady decided to make a live service game" is disengenuine. Jason Shrier has stated before that "When your publisher says they will only green light a live service game, is it really your deision at that point?"
Rocksteady's choice was say yes to a live service game or not have a job. That was Warner Bros decision and NOT the studios.
I wonder how many billion dollar failures it will take before corporations learn to stay the heck out of game dev creative choices and just let them cook what they want. give the developers the money, stfu and let them cook. stop telling them what to make and when and how.
Basically the same shit with Bioware and Anthem. History doesn't repeat but it sure does rhythm.
with regards to the "bioware magic" stuff. While it does sound they took it to an extreme, it is perfectly normal that games feel like a mess and arent fun during development... Evenetually you reach a point where things start to come together, but there is a pretty significant period where you have to go by faith to a certain extent

But for everyone else involved, the managers, the corporate executives, and the stockholders, no I absolutely blame each and every one of them. Instead I want you to create a game for funs sake, they created a game for fun's sake.

It was Sefton Hill who made that decision. It even question Rocksteady staff of why characters such as Captain Boomerang who use iconic weapons using guns. So basically Rocksteady was forced to create characters with guns by Sefton Hill.
The problem for me isn't it being a live service but being a bad game for a live service game to be successful it needs to be compelling to keep players coming back but suicidal squad is just a very bad designed game period
This, as well as the collaboration with Sweet Baby Inc. This is so bad that even an investor has questioned Square Enix's involvement with Sweet Baby Inc. I'd like to see Yong Yea cover them.
its so damn hilarious to me these guys thought it would sell. im just imagining some ex-frat dudes saying “f ya bro this is gonna make us a billion”
The problem for me with live service is even with an amazing game, after 100 hours or so I get bored of the game and need to play something different
I don't really understand - they didn't need to get feedback from WB when they must have known the game they were making was bad. Did WB own Rocksteady this entire time? It seems crazy to me that Rocksteady agreed to the project at all.
It flopped because of DEI and SBI or something.
When i heard Yong yea talk about leadership saying don't worry we are awesome i immediately thought of the old geico commercial with Pinocchio as a motivational speaker lol
I know I’m in the extreme minority, but I do truly enjoy this game. But even I can recognize that it was a complete train wreck
It's always hilarious seeing those studios acting like they are too good to fail and that no matter what they shit out the players will consume...
While studios like From Software, a studio that has been quite consistent in releasing amazing works act extremely humble and laser focused on their vision instead of following the damn trends.
We all know why it flopped. No report needed.
Yongyea channel is failing which is why he's farming
WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT!!?!??!?!?!? SO MUCH SURPRISE!!! OMG THANKS FOR REPORTING THE OBVIOUS!!!
You forgot to mention sweet baby inc bc Ryan kinel cover it on his yt channel
SBI had very little to do with the game, ffs
@@3Guys1Video they are the writers....
@@2zNick they weren't the ones that thought people wanted a looters shooter from Rocksteady
Sweet baby inc had nothing to do with it. You're afraid of ghosts. From the words of Jason Schreirer "I asked two dozen people who worked on the game what went wrong and not a single one mentioned the words "Sweet Baby. You are chasing angry hallucinations created by grifters who make money off your rage"
@@3Guys1Video just 13 writer for the game come from sbi, and seriously 26 writer for this script!
Definitely trend and profit chasing. They saw a way to make more money, so management let the promise of riches lead them by the nose.
You forgot the parasite, sweet baby
Id be amazed if it was getting any support after the end of the year. Apparently the Wonder Woman game developed by Monolith is in dev hell too. WB is a mess of a company.
Yong never gonna miss a chance to grift on a bad game for some easy clicks. Pretty much his whole purpose on TH-cam now. Grift away my friend, I'm sure people need you to tell us this weeks old information to remind us a bad game we have already been told over and over again is bad.....again....
Why are you watching the video then bro? Simply, don't click on it.
I'm enjoying this content
@@gatowololo5629 Who says I did?
Not sure what to think about the two founders, sefton and jaime, leaving and starting their own studio. As the brains behind arkham, I'm inclined to view them positively as the ones who 'escaped' wb when the publishers ruined their game. Looks a bit more like they sank the ship themselves and left their studio with the mess...
Except that WB forced Rocksteady to come with this slop, and they wanted none of that
