  • Dr. Elaine Ingham demonstrates how to prepare and view a soil sample under the microscope.
    Dr. Ingham is a world-renowned soil biologist who pioneered many of the currently used biological soil amendment techniques and pioneered the testing of soil microbial life as an indicator of soil and plant health. Dr. Ingham is the Chief Scientist at the Rodale Institute. She is the founder of the Sustainable Studies Institute and the Soil Foodweb Inc. soil testing labs. Dr. Ingham is the key author of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Soil Biology Primer. She has been the mentor of numerous soil scientists and practitioners of ecologically balanced landscape design, and has helped farmers all over the world to grow more resilient crops by understanding and improving their soil life.

    First time I've heard of using humic acid to "tie up" chloramine, thank you.

    Shouldn't it be 1g of soil to 9ml of water to account for different densities of individual soil samples?

    Again, learning lots about the scientific method. Thanks for showing such easy ways to do things.

    Outstanding.
    I know nothing of these things and have learned a great amount watching this. TY

    A microscope is definitely on my things to do list for this year. I'm guessing the water used to prepare the soil sample isn't tap water but distilled!

    What happens if I shake my sample for a lesser time but much more aggressively? Can one speed up that process or will aggressive shaking cause problems?

    Is there any software hooked up to a microscope that counts and identifies bacteria and fungi as the microscope goes through a series of movements automatically?

      She advocates a 400x is required to see everything we'd want to inside soil samples

    Anyone have a good recommendation for a microscope around $300? Or just general specifications?

      Elaine has another video that she gives all the specs recommend. I’ll try to post the link I just watched it

    So it’s a 1/9 part not a 1/10 part

    • @B01
      @B01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      10 parts. One part soil nine water. Rly not that complicated 🤣

    • @alissarodman8144
      @alissarodman8144 ปีที่แล้ว

      1:10 dilution. 1 mL sample material + 9 mL water = 10 total mL.
      1:9 ratio. 1 mL sample material + 9 mL water is 1 to 9 ratio.
      Dr Elaine is explaing dilution. Ratio is different. Hope that helps.

    You say 1 part to 10 but then say it’s 1 part to nine parts. Pretty sure that’s wrong
