Mario Maker 2 is a fantastic game to practice level design and make something great. And let’s just remember guys, it’s not about likes and plays, it’s about making the majority of levels on SMM2 actually good ones, so you don’t have to search for hours for an actually decent course - among other things like making use of what SMM2 should be and the tools that Nintendo have given us, rather than just refreshing levels and things with a million power ups or coins and levels with naked pipes *shivers*
I like dgr and arrowstole ideas but the rest were really good too so yeah it was hard to pick

As someone who watches all seven of you from time to time, it really feels nice to get some insight on how you all view other's levels and what you guys prefer
I agree with everything but I also think that when creating a level you have to know how to balance challenge and difficulty and how to do it well, not putting a checkpoint to make a level difficult is bad design or putting 6 difficult jumps one after another just to make it challenging is not a good idea, create a challenge in a good way and not in a bad way.

I agree with Smashy most, having a theme is very important. If there is a sudden change in theme, or there is no identified theme, it feels boring.

A good level is one that achieves what it's going for: a good puzzle level has clever puzzles, a good platforming focused level feels good to do platforming on, a good speedrun offers a fluent, fast-paced movement, a good difficult level (kaizo etc) offers a well thought-out challenge, an art level offers an interesting experience and so on. A level should be judged by what it's trying to be - a puzzle level isn't a good speedrun and an art level doesn't need to offer tight platforming. Of course, the elements can mix, but in the end, it all depends on the context. And, this video indeed provides tips for any kind of level; good job on that! :-)

I would add also that it is incredibly important to enjoy your own creation. You truly have to enjoy the craft of making to create something unique. If you yourself do not like what you have made, no one else can.
I would love to see you guys do a podcast-style videos together like this. Seeing you speak on like the tendencies on the popular tab and the change in the type of levels people make would be really interesting

I feel like I made a lot of levels I enjoy playing instead of making levels that others would enjoy. Finding a balance between the two has been a learning experience for sure.

I happen to be remaking a old story series by a user from Mario Maker 1 named Hype who was famous for his Goomba Story series. I haven’t seen the guy appear in Mario Maker 2 yet, so I decided to recreate every level from that Goomba Story series and keeping them as faithful as possible to the originals. I did implement a few changes to make the levels feel more like Mario Maker 2 than 1 with the inclusion of scroll stop and making certain puzzles more clear. I already uploaded the first two Goomba Story levels and while they aren’t popular yet, I don’t care about the popularity of them although it does help expose them to more players.
Credit goes to NintendoThumb for having a playlist with a series of videos archiving the comments that the creator had put while Miiverse was still around. Without those videos, I would not have been able to even remake these levels and credit goes to Hype for creating these great story levels in the first place. Maker ID will be included in a edit to this comment.
Edit: Maker ID: JML-33B-24G to play those Goomba Story levels that I already uploaded. The third Goomba Story level will soon be uploaded in a few days.

And also if you get a good enough like/play ratio, not only will you instantly get on the leaderboards, but a sort of bandwagon effect will ensue, and people who play the level will feel obliged (if you will) to like the level as well (because everyone seems to be liking it and 1 like will barely change the counter and why not. That’s the sort of logic I mean)

I have a tip.Make semisolid backgrounds.Choose ones that work as a background.
Not gonna lie it gets frustrating when I see a level that doesn't follow any of these tips and was probably made in like 5 minutes get into the popular levels

My way to gain popularity is to join a team (Like Team Shell), so they play your levels to get points for their team, and they will expect what will happen in the level. It is best to have a clear vid for harder levels so players from the team know what to do.
Personally I'll add an 11 thing is that the level can be fast like a Sonic game because for online going fast is good (yes I'm a Sonic player who loves Super Mario Maker 2)

you are my favorite TH-camr, no clickbait.
The thing that keeps me from making good levels, is the clear check, I know it's to prevent impossible levels, but if you make a level that's super hard but not impossible, you still have to clear check, which could take hours, and it might not even be popular, meaning you spent several hours doing the clear check for almost nothing.
I remember I played this level that used the night underground theme to shoot fireballs at piranha plants with the fire flower.
