Watched this video last night and went for my EMG test today. Believe you me it’s not at all painful. Right word would be uncomfortable or tingling. Yes it was a bit scary when the first electric shock run through but it gets super quick and the needles won’t hurt at all. Good luck to all those scheduled for this test!
I spoke to my neurologist today. Pls share more. He said about 1/2 inch needle will be used to pinch a nerve in the foot. He said slight discomfort. I said let me read more and get back. I don’t feel flies sitting on my ankle and the top of my foot.
The needle exam was a bit painful for me. Had 4 tiny holes in my hands and 2 in my elbows that drew blood from the needle. The “shock” part wasn’t painful. It’s kinda like those dog collars on low. But a couple times they hit a nerve that I could feel throughout my body. A very weird feeling. If you’ve ever bumped your “funny bone”, that’s what it feels like.
I had it done today in both arms and I was extremely nervous from reading other comments, but in the end it was wasted worry because it was not bad at all, you can barely feel the needle, it more just feels like pressure than a sharp pain, like they were just pressing on a point. The needle was tiny (although I have a habit of not looking at the needle ever) and much much less than an injection needle. The areas they hit the needle for me (was a test for carpal tunnel) were the shoulder, tricep, bicep, forearm, webbing between thumb and index, base of thumb and back of neck on each side of my spine. I thought the thumb would be bad but I literally just felt like he was just pressing on it, no sharp pain. The back of the neck stung a bit but not bad. I have a needle phobia and dread shots but realize most shot (like tetanus/flu shots) don’t hurt as bad as the anticipation of them. I had to wait three weeks for this damn test and worried myself sick waiting, now I feel silly for that. I would do it again tomorrow without hesitation if I needed to, and not even think about it. Granted that some conditions could cause more pain, and the administrator of the shots could make a big difference, but this was cake for me, and I was extremely nervous and near phobic of it until it started. The shock part at worst felts like I bumped my funny bone a bit, it’s annoying but not terrible or even bad. The value of the test should outweigh the phobia around it. I hope I ease someone’s nervousness with this as I was making myself crazy reading comments here and other sites about it.
Trevor Hilseth Good luck! Hope so as well, comment back if you have the same experience so others can see, I just read so many “it’s terrible!” comments I had to share my experience.
Glad it went well for you! In the end it really comes down to the person. The needles really weren’t that bad at all and I even had them on my shins which I expected to hurt. The shock part for me though was extremely painful and I experienced random bouts of nerve pain for several days.
Just had an EMG done on both my arms and I wanted to write my experience for anyone who's wondering how it is. Everyone's pain tolerance is different, but for me, this was NO BIG DEAL at all. My anxiety was off the charts, and it was for nothing. So to start, they do they nerve tests -- little shocks in different locations. I asked my doctor how painful it would be, and he just shocked himself to show me it was no big deal. It really wasn't. You know the electric shock you get when you touch a metal door handle after rubbing your feet on carpet? It's less than that. That hurts more than the nerve shock in the EMG... Now, they shock you dozens of times during the EMG -- they need to do this to get good results. But seriously, it's nothing to worry about. Your fingers/hand might flinch a little bit, but the pain is so minimal. On to the muscle part -- This was what I feared the most. He started with putting the needle in my right bicep. I didn't look because I hate needles, but apparently they use acupunture-sized needles. I kid you not, I didn't even feel the needle going it. It was like a mosquito bit me -- I didn't feel it! After the needle is put in, you'll be asked to flex the muscle. No big deal also. He then put the needle in different locations and the closer it was to my hand, the more painful it got. But even the worst spot -- by my wrist -- was similar to getting a normal flu shot or blood drawn. I might even say less painful than that... Long story short -- I read horror stories. This was NOTHING compared to what I expected. I got all worked up for nothing. I hope someone can feel confident after reading my testimonial. As I type this (About 1.5 hours after my EMG) I'm getting a little bit sore, as expected. Just don't work yourself up if you're getting this. You'll be fine. Thanks!
Same here. Nobody told me anything. I have fibromalgia, so mine was painful, not so much, the hand and arms, but when they did the neck muscles, I had a horrible pain 😫 I am very good with pain because I live with it 24/7 😢
The pain is tolerable but comments saying there’s no pain or limited pain is bull. It is dependent on your pain tolerance. I found it easier to have the day out of work and someone to drive me home. I also asked my doctor if I could take my pain management medicine afterwards.
Had it done yesterday for my right leg. The procedure in itself is pretty managable. The shocks at times feel uncomfortable but just for a brief tap. The needles however are another thing. They have to puncture you about 6 to 10 times. The majority of them don't hurt but there was a few in certain spots that hurt pretty badly but not for too long.
I had this done about a week ago and to be honest I was so scared because I don't like needles or getting shocked and believe I have a hypersensitive nervous system. My experience with this test was not bad at all, a little uncomfortable, and I was a bit sore afterwards but nothing major, the Dr was very gentle and for the most part I didn't even feel the needles going in. Dont worry too much everyone's experience will be different.
I had this done yesterday is both my legs and lower back, pain was not too fun only because I kept moving and flexing my muscles everytime I got shocked or a needle stuck in me. So please DO NOT MOVE, just relax and that’ll make it way easier. I am now very sore in both my legs due to me flexing my muscles.
Mine was really painful at certain points and I was left with several very large, dark bruises afterwards. The technician had to press the reading instrument into me very very hard to get it to register some of the shocks which seemed odd to me. That was what caused most of the bruises. The needles also left small bruises. So overall it was pretty unpleasant for me.
Had one done today without knowing what to expect beforehand - here’s my take. I am deathly afraid of needles and not too afraid of shocks. I gotta say it was definitely mental anguish - it’s a 45 minute test of just getting electric shocks every 10 seconds followed by a bunch of needle pricks every 10 seconds. The actual physical pain is not unbearable (aka it’s not too bad) - but for me the mental pain from anxiety on “when’s the next shock coming....when’s the next needle coming” was enough to shake me at my core - definitely akin to the pain of torture in that sense. So I guess my advice is: don’t worry too much - the physical pain isn’t all that bad - but the mental pain is quite intense
Thanks for being honest Dan. I have to get one of these done next week and I am terrified. Thanks to your comment I am sure I will hyperventilate (kidding..I hope).
Noah Williams Good news is the scariest part - the needle - is actually ok. And they poke you 5 - 10 times with it but It’s like a super thin acupuncture needle. At least you’re mentally prepared! But looking back I would definitely take the day off from work to rest and mentally unwind from the stress of the whole thing
Both weren't bad at all. I actually thought it was super interesting. My doctor was surprised she kept telling me before hand it would be uncomfortable so I was preparing for the worst. The NCV was kind of fun actually, small zaps, EMG was a needle, and the paint isn't that bad and only lasts like 1 second.
It was quite painful, but not unbearable. The technologist told me that testing the neck is very painful, so we didn't do that. The needle part of the test is much quicker and much better than the electrical part.
Thanks for sharing this video. I didn't need to be prepped myself, however my girlfriend was confused by what they were doing to my leg, so this was good to be able to send her :)
Had it done twice for a brachial plexus injury. It was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life...worse than getting an epidural. I wouldn't suggest it on my worst enemy. With all the technology in the world, surely they could come up with something less painful. And after all these years, my fingers still don't move...at all. 😟☹
When I was younger I had this done when in middle school and I had a mean doctor who stuck the needle inside my leg and would move it around in my legs like under my skin.he was so mean and I was bawling my eyes out. My legs were sore bc he stuck the needle in deep. Now as an adult I will be getting the test done again and the fear is real
I had it done today. Piece of cake. Can repeat any time. Taking blood or doing IV is much worse. You barely feel the needle to the point I was not sure when it was inserted and the doctor have to tell me. Regarding electrical part. Again not a big deal. Not painful at all. Some nerves/shocks were barely noticeable - and the worst is again not as bad as having bloodwork/IV. If I have a choice between the too (and I know this is hypothetical as those tests do not substitute in any way for each other) I would prefer NCS/EMG any time. Just want to put this info here for all those who might be scared by what they read online. I wish I never read those reviews myself :)
Had one of these done today on my leg and hand. Hurt like a bitch in my opinion lol. Felt like I was being tortured except it was voluntary and I’ll be getting a bill for it🤦🏼♀️
Had this done today... of course, it wasn't fun, but it really was no big deal. I was so freaked out after reading some of the comments on youtube, but it was wasted worry!
I had this done 3 years ago and no problem. But today it hurt my back leg. I couldn't do the rest i told the doctor to stop. And after i wanted to cry. So now im home and my leg still hurts im laying down hoping it goes away by tomorrow. I can't tell anyone to not get it if it can help doctor diagnose you. But i definitely wont be looking forward if i had to again hopefully i wont need it again.
I had this done twice once 3 yrs ago and it usually should not hurt just a pinch with needle test. But i had it done again today and it hurt my lower back leg a lot i almost cried !! What upset me was i told the neurologist that was my bad ankle leg i had been having leg pain. I couldn't continue he didn't get to my lower back it hurt so much my leg. Its been 2 hours and when i walk my leg hurts i hope it goes away by tommorow. I do not recommend if you already are having some sort of pain in a ankle or leg. You can ask your doctor what he thinks. But i regret it cause now my back leg is in pain.
I’ll be honest. I have HORRIBLE anxiety and panic disorder. I worked myself up so much before this test and it was NOTHING. My pain tolerance is okay and in some areas it hurt a bit but I promise it’s nothing to worry about. It’s no more painful then getting a tattoo.
@@Nestywesty so far they only did the nerve conduction study on my arms and that feels like static shock and it also feels like when you hit your funny bone! It doesn't hurt at all and then on the 21st they'll do EMG part!
Idk what everyone is complaining about....this test is butter. Mine only took like 15 minutes and my doctor was very precise and detailed about literally every aspect of the test. She told me exactly what she was doing at every point of the test. There was 0 pain. Yes.... When they zap you you feel it a bit, but it's not pain ; its just a reflex. I could do the test again tomorrow no sweat. Y'all are a bunch of wooses or your doctors aren't doing it right. Easiest procedure you'll ever have.
I'm surprised how many people are so good with needles. I ended up crying in the middle of it but finished it. It was painful to me! Glad I didn't do any research before so I wasn't expecting the pain but dang. 😭 It's been 8 hours after and I kinda feel the sharp pain in some areas that weren't touched. Definitely not recommended!!!😢😂
@@mariajaramillo1135 then you're tough! I got out there crying like a baby! At the beginning I was like "sorry" but nope. I had to let it out haha. It wasn't funny at that time. 🤦🏽♀️
I missed two appointments because I have panic disorder lol. But now seeing this I’ll prob get it done before my hands completely stop working for me 😣
Oh damn...did you go through with it?.. what issues were you having with your hand?..I'm having my test March 16th.. for my right wrist. I had surgery on
@@IceESole my left hand I can’t open anything like sodas or just anything haha, when I am getting up from couch my left hand feels so weak to the point where it feels like I’ll break it by putting any weight on it 😞 still haven’t went but soon 😆
Had it done for my arm and leg, it took around 15 mins for the whole process, the shocks barely hurt and ut felt like somebody was just using a hair brush on my leg and arm, but for the needle it was so painful I thought I got the covid vscinne 3 times again. Turns out I have myopathy
I had one done a couple years ago because I have multiple sclerosis, the lady hooked me up to the machine and got a call she left me for what it seemed forever!!! I thought o was going to die! It hurts!! I was almost ready to pull out the needles and 🏃♀️ Run!! Horrible horrible moment !
Absolutely nothing to worry about, just a few mild "shocks" and you don't even feel the needles! I had it done on both legs and very small needles in my back. Nothing to it!!
I’m getting one done this Friday but it’s not done like that. My doctors take tiny needles and put them all over my arm then they shock me it’s not very pleasant
I'm getting this test done at the end of the month. I've been experiencing pain in my neck, shoulders and feet for as long as I can remember. I had a spinal fusion back in 2011. Two fourteen inch rods in my back. My question is, how likely is it that I have nerve damage from that surgery and if it is likely just from the surgery alone are my symptoms common in people with nerve damage? Such as the neck and shoulders burning and aching after I put in a long shift at work. My doctor is checking so I can continue taking my neurontin. I was just curious how likely it is to have nerve damage after a surgery such as that?
Just had my first emg done today. I had to do an extra shock test on top of the usual. They sent 10 shocks non stop in a row to the same wrist on the same spot. They did that 6 times to the same wrist. 10 fast shocks then a minute break in between, over all it was the worst part of the test for me. Most people don't have to get that part of the test. They also shocked both legs which i will admit sucked at first but within seconds it's like nothing ever shocked me. The needle part was not bad at all. I don't like getting shots because the needle is big, the needle they use is so small you barely feel it. You do feel a little pinch at times that can be alittle painful, but not to the point where its a problem. I had both my legs and lower back poked. I'm only sore in one of my calves and hamstring. I would prefer not to do it again, but I would if I really need too. I wasnt that stressed about it, but as soon as it started i knew I was in for an interesting experience. Don't worry about it, the test wasn't traumatizing or anything. It was just a bit uncomfortable at times.
so which one is which. the ncv is the needles right? how big are they. I'm getting both done tomorrow. (1/19/22). because of tingling , muscle spasms, and going numbs in the hands. dropping my cell phone, etc. neurologist is doing it. I think I'll be okay with the the shocking, it's the needles I might get shaky about.
@@SarahCSarah came back negative on both test. did blood test. those came back normal. than she ordered a mri of the neck and lower spine. found that I have a bulged disc in neck, and osteo arthritis in the lower back. the neurologist thinks it may be carpal tunnel. Im thinking it's osteo in the hands.
Why is the technician measuring to the ground instead of the stimulation site???? Why is the ground on top of the stimulation site???? Yikes!!!! Why do the sensory responses look like 60Hz interference???
This test was nothing for me. I was more worried about being diagnosed with someone scary than feeling anything. The little zaps from the electrode are nothing. The needle I didn’t even feel. What I did feel was my muscles ache a day or 2 later which was mild. It’s nothing like a flu shot or drawing blood. The needles are like acupuncture needles and they may be smaller than that even. And they don’t go deep. I didn’t even bleed from it.
I just did mine earlier. Gosh it wasn't tht painful but ofrcs i was scared at first obviously its my 1st time😅 Well atleast its done, the electric shock kinda freak me out but the feeling was like explode tingling sensation like PEW and about needles, it doesn't hurt tht much just SLIGHT when they proceed to attaching it to ur skin yet overall is ok. The feeling is just when ant bit ur skin
Im scared ... 😏as soon as he sed electro shock in my legs... my spine has a pressure point pain and i just see it as yu the doc told me a solution or test or idk an i dont wanna except it ...idk what to think or feel ... i cant stop thinking .
Thanks for sharing . I will have an emg test tomorrow morning for my lower half. I was wondering is it safe to do the test while on Warfarin medicine? Thanks. 💯👍🙂
I gonna have mine on friday and I am scared to death, because I read everywhere it is like a torture. Even who gave birth twice said, it is more painfull than giving birth.
Does any one know if there supposed to make you push down hard into the shock thing or needle part I just had one and seems if the doctor was trying to force it by making me push down into it on both parts very painful
I had This Test Done at the Q E hospital October last year the Nerve Conduction it Send Shocks through my Body And I Did not Like the Needle part that did hurt like mad the Doctor I had he Put The Needle in Different parts of my Arm and I felt faint and Went Funny I had to lie Down on the Bed for a bit And it Knocked me about quite a bit thought to let you all know about it everybody on here that's had it done
Hope it goes well or went well. I'm not very good with pain and very sensitive to the touch. My neurologist suspects some muscle disorder called myopathy and wants me to have it investigated with NCS/EMG soon. I'm full of anxiety because of it.
I just had an EMG on my legs and one arm. The neurologist game me THREE zaps at the site of each needle, the first "zap" was mild, the second more intense, and the third painful. Is this normal? I now have terrible headaches and more pain than before. Pease tell me if this is normal protocol. Thank you.
I’ve done it 2 times when I was 11 and 14 . Diagnosed with CIDP (chronic inflammation) . I can’t remember ther first one . The second one on the scale 1-10 . Its 8. Some part really painful 😣. But some part not painful at all . Maybe because of my illness that make me always numb. So only some part that painful. Sorry if my English bad . I’m from Asia .
I went today and I had honestly lost sleep of reading all the dreadful comment , I am the biggest wimp ever when it comes to things like this. Honestly I was laughing its not painful at all !! The thought of it scared me so much . I was totally fine don't sweat it guys ill be fine 😃
I had this test today. The shocks are uncomfortable but not unbearable. I watched the doctor use the device that shocks and it looks like a small cattle prod. I noticed that the level of intensity can and was changed during my test. The test with the needles was fine. I barely felt it. I think the person that would find it so unbearable that they cannot complete the test, has a low threshold for pain.

Had one of these done today on my leg and hand. Hurt like a bitch in my opinion lol. Felt like I was being tortured except it was voluntary and I’ll be getting a bill for it🤦🏼♀️
Tortured? I was nervous but now I’m extra nervous 😩
There like evil ninjas 🥷 with these needles I tell ya
😂😂😂😂
@sidvicious9129 yep. 😅
I don't know if it depends on who does it, but mine was painful.
I am getting this done in a couple days. Having pins and needles pain in my arms and legs and now this will seemingly aggravate it.
What happened? did it hurt?
I’m here for educationalof how the EMG testing is done...my appointment is next month... bit nervous
How did it go? I’m really nervous because I have to get one done too… I have anxiety and panic disorder, is it bad?
Do you get any information after it's done like their thoughts on they might find. I know the doctor still has to review them.
I got my results when the test was finished.
This looks like medieval torture!!!! I'm not looking forward to this at all!!!!! 😢
Yeah I’m not
Lol. Bring the pain. Can't be any worse than what you might be feeling
Don't mislead paiten

I’ll be honest. I have HORRIBLE anxiety and panic disorder. I worked myself up so much before this test and it was NOTHING. My pain tolerance is okay and in some areas it hurt a bit but I promise it’s nothing to worry about. It’s no more painful then getting a tattoo.
I'm so glad and relieved to here this, I'm getting this test on the 19th thanks for your thoughts on this!
@@kimbratton9620 How was it?
@@Nestywesty so far they only did the nerve conduction study on my arms and that feels like static shock and it also feels like when you hit your funny bone! It doesn't hurt at all and then on the 21st they'll do EMG part!
I don’t have tattoos 🥴
It's been 8 hours after and I kinda feel the sharp pain in some areas that weren't touched. Definitely not recommended!!!😢😂
Same here. I had my hands, arms, and neck .
Omg I was trying not to say anything, but two of the nidles really got me.
I cry 😢 😭
@@mariajaramillo1135 then you're tough! I got out there crying like a baby! At the beginning I was like "sorry" but nope. I had to let it out haha. It wasn't funny at that time. 🤦🏽♀️
Very informative video and educational for new patients.
Do not mislead
It couldnt have been this test as neeedles arent "placed" and left.
@@kekkelpenneypeckeltoot5700 I never said needles
So what was hurting you when the doctor left the room?
Absolutely nothing to worry about, just a few mild "shocks" and you don't even feel the needles! I had it done on both legs and very small needles in my back. Nothing to it!!
I’m getting one done this Friday but it’s not done like that. My doctors take tiny needles and put them all over my arm then they shock me it’s not very pleasant
It was the worst pain ever! Had it done today. The rest took less then 30 minutes
Tests, tests, and more testing. And the treatments, if, any, are never mentioned, why?
So what diseases does this procedure actually diagnose? Once you get results then what?
I just took this test and it really wasn't bad at all I was worried for nothing😳😳😳lol
so which one is which. the ncv is the needles right? how big are they. I'm getting both done tomorrow. (1/19/22). because of tingling , muscle spasms, and going numbs in the hands. dropping my cell phone, etc. neurologist is doing it. I think I'll be okay with the the shocking, it's the needles I might get shaky about.
How dit it go? Do you have a diagnosis now ??
@@SarahCSarah came back negative on both test. did blood test. those came back normal. than she ordered a mri of the neck and lower spine. found that I have a bulged disc in neck, and osteo arthritis in the lower back. the neurologist thinks it may be carpal tunnel. Im thinking it's osteo in the hands.
OK. I'm getting this done on my legs on Tuesday. I have to work on Wednesday. I am on my feet all of the time for work. Will I be able to work?
Does it hurt?? i'm supposed to have for both upper and lower soon. based on description, it sounds scary!
I have an emg this Thursday. Kinda freaked out
Do you have to have a flair up at the time of the test to be diagnosed
The NCV test is painful the EMG is not but NCV test is just 6 times inserting the needle so it is manageable
Why is the technician measuring to the ground instead of the stimulation site???? Why is the ground on top of the stimulation site???? Yikes!!!! Why do the sensory responses look like 60Hz interference???
Have done it yesterday..electric shock is manageable only the needle..am afraid of it
This is extremely painful I am still traumatized. Didn’t make it through the study. Never again
5 to 10 percent experience pain and other problems?
Check out www.jewettortho.com/electrodiagnostic-studies/ for more details
The other 5 to 10 percent die, actually. Web MD said so.
My doctor wants me to do one of these but you know what… I think I’d rather not know why I’ve been in pain
You should do it still I have nerve pain it hurts
Just got out of mine and it hurts on most of times they stick needle and hurts alot.
Is it possible to have EMG done on the back muscles? or is EMG can only be done on limbs?
Should the electrical part also go on shoulder and upper arms?
Yeah well.. i can barely move my left arm after i took "coronavirus" vaccine and it has been a week since i've taken it. and now i am waiting for EMG
Im scared ... 😏as soon as he sed electro shock in my legs... my spine has a pressure point pain and i just see it as yu the doc told me a solution or test or idk an i dont wanna except it ...idk what to think or feel ... i cant stop thinking .
I have winging of scapula so doctor write me emg test
The shock was is where the most pain is
Jesús getting this done
Thanks for sharing . I will have an emg test tomorrow morning for my lower half. I was wondering is it safe to do the test while on Warfarin medicine? Thanks. 💯👍🙂
How did it go for you?
Did you get the results you were looking for?
I found this to be the most painful procedure I ever experienced. I would never let anyone do this to me again.
Getting it done on Monday
GoPro Goalie Uzi How’s it go?
how did it go did it tell you anything?
I have to do mine today, do the needles feel like shots?
With all the technology in the world .I thought only a scan of the wrist would be enough ??
I'm here because I'm 14 and getting an emg on may 12
They think I have 2 pinched nerves
I have to get another emg done
@Billy Lunger I have to have surgery
@Billy Lunger it is under my elbow

DOES EMG detect MS
That’s my only question !
I gonna have mine on friday and I am scared to death, because I read everywhere it is like a torture.

Does any one know if there supposed to make you push down hard into the shock thing or needle part I just had one and seems if the doctor was trying to force it by making me push down into it on both parts very painful
Yes they did that to me too. The tech pushed so hard I had very deep, painful bruises afterward.
@@au_barb I ended up getting infection in spine where mine was done hope your healing quit well

Worst pain I’ve had with this test I rather have surgery done then this and I’ve been notified I will have it done again smh
I know nfg mean but I don’t know what meg mean lol
I’m going to have this done soon and I’m kind of nervous lol.

Thank you.
Hi, has your pain now subsided after the test?

Emg ncv test
How painful is this?
I’ve done it 2 times when I was 11 and 14 . Diagnosed with CIDP (chronic inflammation) .
I can’t remember ther first one . The second one on the scale 1-10 . Its 8.
Some part really painful 😣. But some part not painful at all . Maybe because of my illness that make me always numb. So only some part that painful.
Sorry if my English bad . I’m from Asia .
Michael Dodd very painful
I was told by my neurologist that an EMG isn’t meant to diagnose anything, he said it is done for the purpose of Botulinum injections
It was horrific and totally traumatizing.

ANYONE KNOW IF THE EMG TEST CAN BE DONE WHILE YOUR ASLEEP LOL?
I went today and I had honestly lost sleep of reading all the dreadful comment , I am the biggest wimp ever when it comes to things like this.
Honestly I was laughing its not painful at all !! The thought of it scared me so much . I was totally fine don't sweat it guys ill be fine 😃
Thank you!😊
I had this test today.
