    You're protecting some truly beautiful land. I've worked on projects where the rental skidsteer did the same shit. It sucks to have to throw away a work day, but at least it was a good opportunity to take us all on a tour 😍

    An oak savanna nearby me has many of those small fenced off areas to keep the buffalo out to study how they change the land. Its also has an awesome population of red-headed woodpeckers. One of the coolest ecosystems around.

    It's going to take some tricky engineering to set up a wildlife watering station at the sanctuary and, at the same time, keep those pigs from using it too.

    Will you plant native plants where invasives get destroyed? I wonder if that would be possible as a project for the area? Whatever the intent is. This project is in the best hands on earth for conservation.

    Where the fuck is this?
    I lived outside of Laredo back in the mid to late 1950's as a kid by el Arrory Chacone and the scrub looks different.
    At least to my old eyes and memory.
    It's hard to escape the irony of what you are doing.
    But then again a sanctuary attempt in the hands of someone that really gives a shit is worth a go.
    Regards.

    Don't be too against paying people, even yourself, for labor. Corruption is a B, and it might not be feasible initially, but pouring into a project can be more sustainable when people get a consistent (small) reward for their time and work at some point. Helps prevent martyrs from taking over and can be a first step up into a professional career for people who come along. Hell, maybe you can pay people in literal pork for a while?

      Feral pigs in the Western US, and apparently the South, are a different thing. Some of them are descended from pigs that were released or escaped in the 1800s even. They are huge and dangerous and mean and destructive. I adore pigs, they're cute. But these are a different thing.

    Have you considered using volunteers in your commentary.
    Showing their enthusiasm and why they are there is a good way of spreading good news.
    Volunteer videos on youtube are popular. To get people involved, or to get donations in.
    And you cannot do it all yourself.

    1:34 thanks for telling the real truth of why "invasives" move into territories that weren't previously explored by said species always that good ol word (disturbance) and now yall are causing even more of it. Still love watching your videos even from an evolutionary biology standpoint I may not agree with you on the "invasive species thing", but I will jot deny your superior understanding in botany which is also just biology.

    • @u92element4
      @u92element4 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +6

      “invasives”??? is buffelgrass not a nonnative plant that outcompetes natives and makes it less biodiverse? also, even if they do not build any structures on the property land still needs to be cleared so the cars dont catch the whole area on fire

    • @CrimePaysButBotanyDoesnt
      @CrimePaysButBotanyDoesnt  9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +9

      The land we are clearing was already cleared 30 years prior and buffelgrass infltrates plenty of land that hasn't experienced any disturbance, just like many invasives do. You don't need to agree with me, lol, you don't need to comment or do ecological backseat driving either

    • @KR-rs3sj
      @KR-rs3sj 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@NUCLEARNIRVANA999 The takeover of disturbed land by ruderal invasive plants is typically in the context of agriculture, not a small plot being monitored by professionals. I'm sorry but your logic on why something wouldn't be native just doesn't make sense, we don't get to change the definitions to make the work easier because one plant is surrounded by another invasive that makes its life cycle harder. The goal of a project like this is to return the land to a state where that maintenance doesn't need to take place because the native community is planted to outcompete the invasives. Your examples of prairies and forests need a little more context and really don't relate to this project in any way. Native prairies need fire once in a while but the current issue is that the garbage invasives increase the fire temperatures to the point that the native bunchgrasses can't survive and everything just gets pasted over with Bromus or Cenchrus the moment the fire goes away. Pseudotsuga outcompetes oaks in areas of fire exclusion and deforestation, ie crap land management. I hope this explained it a bit, I'm in the midst of a bout of bronchitis after 5 days of flu so I'm a bit woozy haha. Have a good evening.
