I agree with your intro comment and would add that for me, the into to the Fine Young Cannibals "You Drive Me Crazy" ranks up there with "Tin Soldier". Speakers are cranked up when I play that intro. Dire Straits had a good one as well u the name is lost at the moment in the black hole between my ears.
I'm 54 years old and I can offer up no rhyme or reason as to why The Small Faces were never on my radar. I now, however, cannot get enough of them. What a genius Steve Marriott was. Great Songwriter. Great guitarist. Brilliantly soulful voice..and surely one of the most enigmatic front men ever. I feel quite sad that both he and Ronnie are no longer with us and that I never appreciated them in their heyday. I am more than making up for lost time now.
How and when did you discover the Small Faces? I still remember the day that my older brother brought home Itchycoo Park. We played it over and over. In my first garage band, I wanted to do Tin Soldier and I got resistance from the other members. "We can't do that. It's out of our league!" Of course it was, but I was disappointed that we didn't even give it a try. They wanted to stick with simple things, like Little Black Egg (the Nightcrawlers).
+Sprout Magoo Im with you man I turn 55 next week an in the last few weeks i have listened to this band more then ever!! Why wasn't this stuff on the Radio in the 70's!! Marriott is just awesome LOVE THIS BAND!!
Sprout Magoo that's because they never toured the States. I feel the same way. We were robbed! But, then again, so were they... The music business is full of criminals.
I'm the same age and am having the same experience. This particular track is epic, among the great rock singles of the decade. Still, up until a year ago, I knew only "Itchakoo Park." They put out a great series of songs when we were kids. I guess they broke up before we turned 10, so we can cut ourselves some slack ;-). By the time the 70s rolled around, Faces confused things. Humble Pie had some great songs but didn't register quite the way some other bands did.
one of the all time best songs from my youth ....Aww my goodness so moving ...your eyes there deeper than time .....x miss Steve Marriott and that voice and energy .
Simply one of the most beautiful, most profound love songs -- ever. Dynamic and unforgettable (just like a true love). Barbra -- the lyrics say it all for us. I hope you can hear this from Heaven, Barbra, My Forever Baby Love.
As good, soulful, and melodic as this version was, why do I feel like Marriott's later band, Humble Pie, could've played this song louder, harder, and faster and with a little bit more edginess to it than what the Small Faces were capable of. Steve Marriott was the perfect marriage between Rod Stewart and Robert Plant, he had all of their best qualities as musicians but none of their later silliness, or pretentiousness. He could've been or should've been one of the best hard rock/ heavy metal vocalists-he had the edge, the intensity, on-stage aura, flair for the dramatic that Roger Daltrwy possessed, Plant had it, Tin Soldier sounds like a proto-Led Zeppelin metal song. All the ingredients are There except a louder, more amped-up, distorted sound surrounded with massive choruses and echo. It isn't the same kind of dark, violent heavy metal Black Sabbath perfected with grungy, toned-down half-flat power chords and creepy lyrics that seem kind of trite and childish. I like Sabbath, but most of their song lyrics, save for a few exceptions, aren't on Pink Floyd's Dark Side or Peter Gabriel/Genesis level. I don't necessarily blame Ozzy for this since it was mostly Geezer Butler who wrote most of Sabbath's lyrics during their heyday and long afterwards.
Steve Marriott's voice is as unique as Rod Stewart's. Its energy and passion comes from a dark place deep inside and is as sincere as a rock voice can be. Its something quite rare and grabs you by the throat. There are many great rock singers but some have just that bit extra which sets them apart and I reckon this was true of Marriott!. The band itself was just one in a row!
I prefer Steve's voice a lot more to Rods, but yeah agree, both unique. It really is a great rock and blues voice...and very distinctive. No wonder Jimmy Page wanted him bad to front Led Zep!!!
Powerful, timeless, and soulful beyond words. "All I need is your whispered 'hello'" ..."Your eyes are deeper than Time" -- lyrics for those who know eternal and true love. This tune is for us, Barbra. Rest in peace until we meet again some fine day. Thank you, Small Faces! Britain ruled the air waves during the 1960s!
My tribute to Ian Patrick McLagan fondly known as "Ian Mac" to all who loved him, who passed away in December 2014. His astounding keyboard work & especially his Booker T style Hammond work added "upliftment" to the tunes of many bands, outside of the Small Faces. These included the likes of The Stones (Miss you), Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Billy Bragg, the Faces (The Rod Stewart / Ronnie Wood era) & I'm sure, many more that for the moment escapes me ! Not only was he a great musician, song crafter & a "Cockney" of note, but what he termed a "good hang" (a person with whom you could enjoy having a beer or three & a good chat as well. Let alone a raver out of the top bracket !). He also said that just being a good musician was not enough for the band, you had to be a "Good Hang" as well ! Although there are many Small Faces tunes he "garnished like a seasoned chef would do a dish of note", this particular "60s Anthem" does it for me ! RIP you musician of Note & "Good Hang". The music scene & it's music, was richer for your presence ! Thank you Mac !
One of the greatest Rock N Roll love songs -- ever. The lyrics say it all -- the truest essence of love. Steve Marriott and company deserve a place in Heaven for this one.
Takes my right back to the 60’s and seeing them in concert........so good, so real and fresh and carefree back then. I’m glad I was born in that era and got into music and concerts when I was 13 ....
Great and eternal love and great music provides you with depth. It took me almost a lifetime to find My Barbra. It took only two years before cancer stole Barb away from me. The lyrics to this truly righteous tune say it all for us. My Lady Barbra Rose was (and remains) the most magnificent gal I will ever know. What a wallop from those keyboards and guitars! What sublime and powerful lyrics and vocals!
@SugarTownie A simply incredible tune! This tune makes me wish I could have visited England during the mid-1960s. Brit bands truly ruled the airwaves then. Best from the States.
Why is this never played on any radio stations its all ways lazy or itchycoo even though they are great tracks this is something else it's just shear 60s blast out.......60s at its best
Steve you may be right about that. I have a book about Led Zeppelin and I think I did read that. I'll have to go back and re-read that part and I'll let you know.
Being melodic (by the way melodic means having a melody to sing- not just one root note with a couple minor or major thirds ok?) AND heavy is not as easy as it sounds. Steve and the gang sure made a memorable example of this with this song. Bravo Small Faces. You ain't here in person, but you're forever in us. Rock on!

Masterpiece! 1960`s Rock for ever!
Love this song.
Music with passion - the small faces played as if they meant it
Love this track!!
I'm 59 and I'm only listening to these lads now out of this world 😮😮😮😊
It doesn't rock any better than this track here !!
"Your eyes are deeper than Time" -- lyrics for you in Heaven, My Darling, True, and Eternal Love (Barbra Rose).
what a tune, what a band & what a tragic early loss for Steve Marriott..... what a voice.... RIP all members passed ....
the instrumental perfectly fit the last (true) episode of Top Gear. Nearly brought me to tears.
This is the ultimate 60's rock song from the ultimate 60's rock band. Pretty much perfect.
@SugarTownie A simply incredible tune! This tune makes me wish I could have visited England during the mid-1960s. Brit bands truly ruled the airwaves then. Best from the States.
Best intro EVER! 👌
That intro is one of the most indelible ever created.
Why is this never played on any radio stations its all ways lazy or itchycoo even though they are great tracks this is something else it's just shear 60s blast out.......60s at its best
Love this song
"Please allow me to introduce myself.." Covered by Todd Rundgren in 1982, so I put both versions in my Rundgren playlist. Thanks for the upload!
Thanks. I have not heard the TR version before.
Sounds like it could have been recorded YESTERDAY. Incredible.
words can explain how good this tune is!
Für mich einer der stärksten 60's-Songs überhaupt!!!
As near perfect as it is possible to be
Steve you may be right about that. I have a book about Led Zeppelin and I think I did read that. I'll have to go back and re-read that part and I'll let you know.
Agreed! What an incredible tune --from start to finish! Lyrics that are from the heart and soul. Music that is powerful/dynamic.
@narozzz
Absolutely outstanding - the way rock was menat to be - Thank you England!
What a powerful intro!
Pity they got hooked up with Don Arden. After the big Two. Take your pick from The Who, Kinks, Small Faces & the tragedy of Badfinger.
Classic.
Fantastica!!!!
Christ, that stuff is deep, Walt. Sorry to hear of your loss.
God bless.
My all time favourite by the Small faces . Miss the voice of Steve Marriat even now.
Brilliant song from this brilliant group of the 60s long live mods
heard it in 67.... SM ever since, such a talent
Greatest song ever written
Being melodic (by the way melodic means having a melody to sing- not just one root note with a couple minor or major thirds ok?) AND heavy is not as easy as it sounds. Steve and the gang sure made a memorable example of this with this song.
Bravo Small Faces. You ain't here in person, but you're forever in us.
Rock on!
