    Also, Eznix, you did a really good job of explaining this. So, I am subbing to you, and I liken your tutorials to Chris Titus. Both of you are making me more comfortable with Linux.

    Wow ... 17:45 ... Restoring all your app settings is so simple in Linux, it is almost unbelievable. No wonder so many people are switching to Linux now. I am starting to see it.

    I've also been using Synkron for a few years. It's on Win and Linux and is identical

    Thanks great video!
    I'm just starting to use grsync do you still use either of these add they both seem to have no development for a few years is that something to be concerned about?
    Also in grsync can you explain the exclude files /folders command please?
    Cheers

      Most of the time I use the filemanager and just drag-n-drop copy for my backups, but grsync is used too. I see no problem with using grsync even though it may not receive updates, it works fine and use it locally so its not making any outside connections. I have not used the exclude command, I simply backup only what I want. You can add additional options in the Advanced options tab and use something like:
      --exclude 'dir1'
      To exclude a specific directory.

    Thank you for explaining this so well. I am new to Linux, and I needed to figure out how to back stuff up. Also, I liked how you showed Lucky ... 14:50 ... how it would give you the Rsync command that you could copy out. I'm not as comfortable with CLI as GUI (since I'm from WIndows), but I think it is always better just to do it simple versus monkey with Rsync 50 times to get it right. GUi makes it much faster for those who don't use it frequently.

    Please advise me as to what boxes need checking to do a system back up?
    Should I copy Sym and hardlinks?

      You should look at this page for details on how to use grsync. There is more info than I could type into a comment:

    Hello thanks for the nice video.
    For image of all the OS after disaster must to copy the root(/) plus do not leave filesystem?
    or just home folder?
    Ex. i need my programs (skype,anydesk etc.with my setting) and drives, system settings etc.
    Thanks

      Maybe these tools can be used for entire system backup, but I never thought about them that way. Clonezilla is a Linux based drive and partition imaging system that can image your entire system and then can be restored. Personally, I just backup my /home folder and copy it back after reinstalling the operating system. I keep a list of all the packages I install and just reinstall them.

    I wonder if it's a good idea to exclude application cache folders from the home backup: I do have 4/5 years old cache files in my home subdirs, even for firefox and picture viewers. In this case Lucky Backup got a specific option to exclude them with a Reg-Ex. It's a nice addon. Thank you for the video!

    If I would do such a guide I'd explained to all interested, first of all, any compelling and worthy reasons of why would I use Grsynk, Rsync, e.t.c instead of simple copy, delete and paste commands "bashed" and possibly scheduled with cron. I watched your video until the end and still haven't heard that explanation.

    • @eznix
      @eznix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used copy and paste for years ans still do sometimes. No real difference between c+p and rsync. Good point. I wish I thought to say that during the video. Thanks.

    Another nice video eznix with good demonstration - I need to get this in place properly, I keep copies of my data but because I distro hop a bit I don't tend to use the backup tools.
    I tried your Debian respin but had problems installing to real hardware - but managed to run live and install in Virtualbox OK. It even went fullscreen in Virtualbox, I do have a few partitions and hdd's in my machine and noticed the install picked up 2 swap files before it failed.
    Will persevere tho - cheers Geoff

      I am curious as to what is causing the trouble installing to hardware. The installer is just plain Debian transferring the image of the filesystem from the squashfs file. Interesting. Glad it has worked well otherwise and thanks for the feedback. :)

      Hi eznix just an update - the install issue was failing to load components from CD, I had burned the iso to usb stick so I tried again using a DVD instead and lo and behold it installed perfectly.

      @@tenroh56 I'm glad you got it sorted. In my experience, some methods of burning ISOs on USBs are occasionally erroneous. Some work better with some distros than with others etc.

    Good vid! LuckyBackup .. I dont remember 100% but I think it creates extra hidden files within each copied directory/subdirectory
    and it was sooo annoying to infest my dirs with these files e.g. .LuckyBackupSessions or smthn. So i stopped using it.

    • @eznix
      @eznix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not look for extra hidden files with Lucky Backup, but that would be unwanted if such files were created within the backups. Thanks for the compliment. grsync and lucky backup both seem to be straight-forward wrappers around rsync without requiring too many dependencies, that is why I chose them for the demo.
