This was grown in the South Pacific on an uplifted coral island in the tropics. It doesn't freeze, so the turmeric is ready in about 9 months. Outside the tropics, people use row covers, cloches, or small greenhouses to create a warmer microclimate and protect the plants from unexpected cold snaps. In zone 6, your biggest threat is frost, and turmeric is often dug up and overwintered indoors or in a greenhouse in pots. Turmeric might not reach full maturity in regions with short summers. However, younger rhizomes can still be harvested and used. The difference we saw in the tropics was that the plants are normally only about 2 feet high, with yields of only a pound or two. With IMO, the plant was at least twice as high as normal, and the yield was perhaps 10 times bigger.
