    What if you put a little fold down lip on the inside of the back panel and made it into a phone or tablet stand? So someone's netflix or YT tutorials can be within reach and eyesight. To be fair, seems like the perfect viewing height, and most people watch stuff on phone/tablet these days. Maybe even make a little quarter size slideable flap that could open to accommodate a charger cord, so it doesnt have to come over the inside of the box.
    Edit: PLUS it would keep your device off the table, where I'm always afraid of getting stuff or spilling stuff on it.
    Could even use it as a reference book/material stand. The possibilities are endless!

      I absolutely love this idea.
      You could also maybe use blackboard paint on it to use as a sort of draft or scribble board
      I also love the idea of the panel being clear or maybe not a purely solid piece to help give the illusion of openness while ensuring the security of the drawers. Like die cut geometric patters that can be customized.
      I really want this to become a thing cause I need a better hobby case LOL!

    I have two suggestions from a hobby lady with a disability.
    Suggestion one: The possiblity for a carrying padded strap. For a person who uses a cane, wheelchair, or, a walker our hands are busy and art boxes get modified or put in a backpack. If a strap could be added a person could put it over the shoulder, across the body, or on the back of their chair.
    Suggestion Two: Light
    Not to add it but trying to save some of the backsplash for clip on lights for people who go to crops. Often the lighting is bad or you just need more light. Having a section where you can clip a light helps a lot.
    I do agree that the backsplash is too high for interaction with people so my second suggestion might have to go to the shed also.
    Love the updates! Feels like watching a Kickstarter idea come to life.

    That back panel seems okay to me. Largely unobtrusive. To help make it less monolithically blank, you could put a maker label or the owner's nametag there, or you could just put a couple of windowed holes in it.

      @starshine_lue5823 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@sophiawhettingsteel3489 i had the same thought process. I think that the hinges may not be strong enough for this design. A lot of the waight would be supported by that panel with the way its built now. Even if it didn't break right away, it might wear out over time if you used it enough

    • @Thejfm10
      @Thejfm10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i thought about the same. I really think this is a viable solution. I souldn't worry too much about the weight support. You still have the side and front panels and with a great locking mechanism it will be no problem. For the cutting mat drawer you culd simply make the upper surface bigger and add just a little cutout from which you could pull the mat out. that will give you some extra centimeters space in that place and it doesn't compromise on the function of the drawer

    I think the "all in one" approach where all is interlocked is better, because I know from my boyfriend, who also has hobby boxes for his miniature painting, that if you put something on the side if usually stays there and is not being packed away as easily, whereas when everything is connected, it is just faster, hence less hurdles to actually clean up :) maybe a solution from the previous box could be to cut the top part in half and then install the hinges to the sides? Then it would work like these old sewing kit boxes my grandma used to have :)

    @BookStuffWithIzzyK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My first thought when you mentioned that the height of the back was a problem in prototype 0.08, was actually that it was quite perfect for what I would use it for. I often jot down notes or ideas when I’m away from my craft/art area. When I then go to work on the craft, laying my note to the left or right can strain the neck, leaning it against the drawers would mean moving it when I needed access to a tool or supply, and just leaning it against the back keeps it below eye level or it could slip and move around, dropping down behind the topmost rack of supplies.
    If that back had a thin cover of cork, you could pushpin your design to it, or even use a small to mini binder clip to hold it up on the top edge. This brings your notes, concept sketch, color plans up to a height where you can simply lift your eyes, handsfree to consult your notes.

  • @jennifer9084
    @jennifer9084 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The back panel could become something: where I place my cell phone as i sometimes bring up reference pictures (so maybe a ledge),somewhere to hold brushes horizontally, maybe a magnet type system where you can put your reference pictures, maybe an acrylic window instead. These are just random ideas. I think if you justify the height internally then I don't see the height being too much of a problem.

    I really like the new "take off the lid" design! With the very heavily present racks of paint, it does seem to be very shoe horned into the mini figure world, I am wondering if it's going to be useful for say polymer clay sculpting, which is a hobby I'm looking to pick up. For that purpose it would be awesome if it was possible to take out some of the columns for paint and use the space for something else.

    • @annnoyez
      @annnoyez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes i was looking at it for my watercolour painting... i guess, once the first box is made, there will be pieces to be adjustable for other arts and crafts. I see it before me. I could use a box of 4. 1 for watercolouring, 1 for acrylic, one for jewelry making and one for my alcoholmarkers... i mean i see them stacked next to my desk and when i want to do something, taking the box i need set it up and go... done put it back at its place and take another one... i am really in for it. So i guess, polymereclay should also be possible to have a box...

      I'm trying to imagine a concept where that space is instead filled with 3 or 4 shelves/ racks that you can pull out (Probably sideways so it doesn't obstruct the work space), but not only just pull out but also fold so that you can easily get at several small dishes for various water color paints.

    My husband and I are are still super excited for this concept! I'm glad you're taking time to work out the bugs! A note from my husband: he says as long as you make this airbrush friendly (a room for an airbrush cleaning pot), he's going to support this immediately upon release. One issue he has with all other hobby boxes is that they are not airbrush friendly. If your box has space for the pot (the airbrush itself fits in the lid drawers) you have cornered the market for airbrush hobbyists. He also noted that where you have your wet pallette now is perfect and doesn't need a specific slot in the bottom. Thanks for all your hard work Jazza and team!

    Honestly, one of the selling points of the box was that it was all in one and portable. The new prototype loses that because it is separate parts. My suggestion is to ditch the loo roll holder in 0.7 and move the draws under the paints. That takes the weight away from the lid and reduces the length as it can hang behind. The extra draws at the bottom could be used (like you said) for a wet palette or a rule book/codex.

    I really like the new design! The only question I have is about the water pot holder. I am a tad clumsy and so if I don’t dry it totally before putting away (or in my case I put it away with a full pot) wont the water destroy the case and possibly even flood some of the storage areas? Having the water pot flip up seems a bit risky maybe? Other than that thanks for the fantastic content. :)

    Hi Jazza, I am working on something similar and I feel your pain. I have some tips for you if you like :) What I am working on is more for an organized tabletop gameplay though so it is not directly related 😅
    One solution you may look into is to use hinge supports to lock the lid in 90deg when opened. That should save you more space depth wise when opened.
    Try to look at jewel boxes for opening form inspiration as they already have an array of methods on how to close all those jewelry or make up boxes into a nice and tight compact boxy :)

    That's a nice challenge to have in life; to focus on one thing and keep tweaking it, until it's the best it can be. It gives a satisfying journey to life, and great little rewarding steps along the way. I think everyone should adopt a hobby to build or create something. Humans are builders; and I think a lot of people fall into a depression when they're not creating something. I find myself feeling miserable when I stop working on my comics. Society says doing creative things are a waste of time, but I think it's what makes us human; we feel the best when creating something new, and upon sharing our creations we inspire others to do the same. I'm excited you're excited about product design; and I can't wait to see what this new passion of yours leads you to do. :)

    If you are making the back board of the box out of plexiglass (acrylic glass) for example, it won't feel like such a barrier and you could watch tv through it :)

    Brilliant design Jazza! Have you thought about making the back panel hinged (outwards)? This would mean that the drawers could be opened when the box is closed, you could leave it up to stick reference pictures to or turn it into a shelf by having a little removable block which stops the shelf from folding all the way down. Not sure if that makes sense. I love how it splits into two because it could fit on to the smallest desk with the drawers sitting on the floor. Have a fantabulous day!

    It's really great to see these updates and the general progress of this! Much because we're invested in you and this project (I believe regardless of who wants to buy it or not), but also because it gives people a realistic understanding of the actual process of creating a product, and the whole process behind it. You don't just have an idea, come up with a design, and start selling/ racking in the dollars. You gotta do all the nitty gritty work first. At least if you care about it, and want a quality product.
    Thanks Jazza!

    Somehow I missed this whole hobby box project. Very cool project. One idea for the tall back panel is you could put clips or elastic bands to hold pencils, pens, rulers, or brushes horizontally. Or if you can't have anything sticking out. What about just putting useful information printed or engraved there like built-in rulers (so you can just hold string, etc up to it), color charts, etc. Another idea is to have a clear plastic envelope mounted there that someone can slip a card in there with whatever they want printed on it.

    I love seeing your process! It will be great when you are finally done! I was also thinking...What if the top set of drawers had the flap from the back latched with the front of the base so you still keep the support/blocking of the drawers but don’t lengthen the work space flap? Then have a garage door type mechanism that allows you to tuck the drawer cover into a hidden compartment so you can access the drawers. The drawers can then still face forward and you can still have a sliding channel to separate the two.

    - LED light connection area
    - wet pallet storage
    - shelf on back panel for mobile/tablet stand and a power cable
    - where the cutting mat shelf is you could only have the cut out to pull it out a few inches wide rather than cut all way back across the front
    - the back panel that is there could possibly slide up and out of the box frame if you not using as phone/tablet support
    - I'm left handed. Either have it in tow variants or being able to switch what side water pot area is would be great.
    Just some quick thoughts I had watching this :)
