  • I just learned that garlic should be planted in the fall but can be planted in the spring (it just won't get as large). Good thing I still have my day job for a couple more years...LOL. I decided to give spring planting a try and after talking to the good folks at Keene Garlic, I settled on a couple varieties to try. We discussed fertilizer since I was getting a late start and they sell Organic Garlic Fertilizer 5-2-2-1s on their website. They also suggested Holly Tone as an alternative. I use that in my chestnut orchard and had some on hand so I thought it would be fun to try both and see what happens. They wound up sending me a bag to try with my bulbs. I am not an agricultural scientist by any stretch of the imagination but tried to keep things as even as possible. I picked out similar sized cloves for the planting and planted them in the same row with each other. They both got the same care during the growing season and were harvested at the same time. I didn't see a noticeable difference while they were growing but knew I was going to have to put the truth out there even though I was given their fertilizer (got to maintain my unbiased reputation... :) ). When I harvested the bulbs that summer I was surprised to see that there was a difference in size that I could see with my naked eye. I selected the 5 largest bulbs as a sample from each planting and the result was........hey, you need to give me view to find that out....LOL

Only 4 months, wow, we need 9 months here in Canada for the garlic.
