I'm just getting back in vinyl after a 15 year break and this video was incredibly helpful: I was sure about going with a MP110, but thought to "give TH-cam a try." This video put me square in the VM95 camp. So thank you for making it.
And to any other reviewers doing a similar thing who happen to be reading: thank you for your work as well. I've watched a couple. It's fabulous having a resource for listening to cartridges, something that wasn't available to me back in the day.

Huge Nagaoka fan. I had the MP 110 and still use 150. But the AT VM95ML tracks quite a bit better with no sibilance, and has better channel separation. That makes a huge difference especially with second hand records.
If your coming to AT from Nagaoka, keep in mind that it will sound bright and thin at first. You need time for ears to adjust to what I think is a more neutral presentation (not actually bright).

AT are leaders in what they do. There are other ways to hear music if you wish to experiment for example Jico stylus' which in their respective forms can offer the very best value for money, in my opinion.

Also a huge Nagaoka fan. The MP110 is a legend and the high end styli they make with boron cantilevers are god like.
I concur with your post here. A micro line styli can’t eliminate it but you will absolutely get less inner groove distortion with a Microline styli. Yes, a micro line styli will put less wear on vinyl grooves as claimed but it would take a PLETHORA of playback to notice any difference in wear vs a good quality elliptical(bi-radial) nude Diamond!
The AudioTechnica micoroline offerings are very affordable for a styli of such high calibre compared to most worthy manufacturers.
Every AT cart I’ve owned or auditioned sounds bright and I freaking love them.
Other than AT & Nagaoka, GoldRing is my third favorite cartridge company of all time. Some of their higher compliance carts/styli sound outstanding when they’re setup properly (of course) with the proper azimuth/tracking angle.

So I bought both of them after reading the comments. Spent so far about half hr listening to both with Ella and Louis Cant We Be Friends. It confirmed pretty much what I heard on TH-cam. The AT has better separation, and better sound stage with depth. But the sound signature is off and unnatural. It sounds compressed, lacks warmth. The Nagoka sound is more accurate to what my Lyra Delos sounds like. But problem is the separation is almost none. It's such a 2D sound. I know I won't like the AT sound the way it presents vocals and even instruments like the sax which sounds small. Ughhh...I'll go listen some more and adjust setup to see if it makes any difference.
Update: I didn't have the cartridges setup right initially. I'm using a Mitsubishi linear tracking to test. Not about to mess up my VPI setup. Now i got them in optimal position. The fullness improved. AT sounded a lot better. The detail and sound depth is pretty incredible for the price. It's better than the Nag for sure. But I think what's missing is the warm and bass extension. It seems to be a bit short. I would describe it as a "cold" sound cart. I would like if it had 20% more in the lower range and bring some more warmth to the vocals. The Nag picks up a lot of the pops and crackles. I'm going to keep listening to it. Had to cut it short as the wife was on my case for noise complaints haha. I didn't expect this Mitsubishi to perform anywhere close to what Im hearing. Keep in mind my regular TT is a VPI scoutmaster2 with a Lyra Delos.

I'm not saying that the Nagaoka isn't a good cartridge at all, because it is. The VM95ML is the best value for price. If looking to upgrade and not looking for expensive, Get the Audio Technica!!

I completely agree that long-term listening is absolutely the best way to form an opinion on a cartridge.
I can listen to quick comparison videos and make an initial judgment on that, but what draws me to a cartridge's sonic signature is listening to it for months across various genres of music. This goes for both digitized needledrops AND in-person listening.
Besides, I don't limit myself to just one sonic signature. Variety is the spice of life!

I bought the Nagaoka and was unhappy with my system with the DJ Pre II on an old Universum Turntable.I screwed the nagaoka onto my Yamaha YP-D6. This has modified cables (Summer Cable Stratos) and combined with the internal phone amplifier of my Denon PMA 2000R.
I hear an open stage, very fine mids, the voices sound very relaxed and real without distortion. The bass is not very powerful, but very differentiated. It's noticeable on large drums. The Nagaoka can play very low. It sounds real to my ears. This system does not rely on effects but rather on neutral reproduction. I can listen to it for hours without it getting annoying. I always find myself turning up the volume because nothing about the music is annoying.

  • @TheAgeOfAnalog

I own both. The MP-110 is a good value, but the 95ML is just a much better sounding combo.

  • @LZP1987
    @LZP1987 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I own both of them. Mounted on my Technics 1210GR they sound clearly different.
To my ears, the 95ML's tonality is more on the clinical side. It does not sound bad but kind of lame. The soundstage is narrow, the bass is shy and the upper frequency band is clear but at the same time not very detailed. Over all, it is leaning more towards the mids.. (The mids are kind of aggressive.)
The Nagaoka has a strong bass, warm mids and is a bit soft in the HF band, but with much better detail and separation compared to the 95ML. These differences will become impressive if classical music is played. A good recording of Dvorak's "From The New World" will reveal the qualities of the Nagaoka. There's more "attack" to the whole show.
The 95ML only has less IGD, but they are close. It is not THAT much of a difference in IGD to call the 95ML the winner.

Heck, the Ortofon blue after break-in is about perfect. On my living room setup I don't want to put anything really nice because my kid will break it. I have a cheap VM95 blue spherical...after break in that sounds pretty amazing. Great cart for used records. Very forgiving. It's all about the music and the application IMO. Presentation is open, airy, better separation and more nuanced on the 95ML. It has a bit of a holographic effect to the way it presents the sound. 110 sounded a bit punchier, but also muddy and congested. DSV, I couldn't find a Video comparison of the Naga MP 110 vs the AT- VM95e (with an upgraded stylus VMN95 EN) on a AT- LP120XNBT-USB TT. So I looked at this one. I have the TT for about a year. Sounds great for the $$$$ . The upgraded stylus made a slightly noticeable difference. I just ordered a Naga MP 110. I noticed that the Naga is bit Punchier and a bit Louder. If you check the specs on cartridges, the Naga has s slight higher db over the AT, so that makes sense. But I think the AT is Clearer and offers a little Cleaner sound. I tested a Cat Stevens Greatest Hits LP. I ordered the Naga on Amazon, and it was delivered promptly, however, no directions were supplied in English ?? Only Japanese... I think the Audio-Technica VM540ML is better than these

The mp-110 is much more natural but the Audio-Technica seems to have the upper hand in channel separation and clarity

looks like I'm gonna be another convert from Naga to AT. I just cannot stand sibilance or IDG,.

Than increase the weight a little bit on the nagaoka you already have. Track at 1,95 and you'll hear the difference.

Please read my response to @br1878.
I’m a huge fan of Nagaoka & the legendary MP 110 & a huge AT fan. Comparing these two carts is kinda apples & oranges imho.
    Thankyou dude.
