I would have loved to seen this video last week before I ordered the first two Evil Dead movies on DVD, but hey, I actually picked the Book of the Dead versions so it's all good! I've been behind on getting them. I had them all on VHS, but never could decide which DVD versions to get. I decided to break down and get them this year. Still haven't got the third one yet, but that's the version I was planning on getting because of the content. Great review man. I agree about the Blue-rays!
Awesome video man!! I diffently plan on getting those editions of all three films. Plus I want to get the new 3 disc edition of the first one and the Evil Dead 2 tin. I love these films and your right when it comes to part 2 adding the scary and humour perfectly in the film. Also, I ordered The Legend Hell House after you talked about the film. It came in the mail two days ago and I watched last night. It was amazing and creepy!!
Thanks for the info, of course with the rapid introduction of digital projectors (even the small cinema in my town has one screen fitted with digital projector) and the days of the reel of film is numbered! Actually quite pleased about that whilst film is romantic I am tired of worn out prints and technical failures whilst watching films!
@Zaranyzerak did you pick up the evil dead and evil dead 25th anniversary on blu ray. also the r3 hk version of army of darkness has the best picture and longest cut but they don't have the good bad i'm the guy with the gun line and the s mart ending isn't used but it's on the deleted scenes openings and endings section.
@Zaranyzerak If you order on amazon get it from the canadian amazon site! Shipping was no more than it would be from a state close to me. I was so excited. Hahaha. I didnt move until all of season 1 ended. The copy I got has the original Todd film on it too. One of "the dudes" was Todd in it.
The UK Optimum Blu-ray of "AOD" has both cuts (the theatrical cut on Blu, while the Director's Cut is in DVD quality). The theatrical cut looks PHENOMENAL on Blu, quite possibly one of the most beautiful looking transfers from a '92 film. The extras include the original commentary but only for the director's cut, deleted scenes and a trailer. No new featurettes included and it's region-locked too.
I wish they'd release a collection/trilogy/boxed set of these on DVD in the US. Any word on such a thing happening? Halloween really got me into the "Evil Dead" mood and I'm thinking of buying them. Also, any comments on the PAL DVD trilogy?
Thanks for this. I was wondering which edition of Army of darkness I should get. I have the korean edition of the Book of dead. It has evil dead 1 and 2 and it doesn't smell.
@Zaranyzerak you can get evil dead 2 25th anniversary for $10 dollars on blu ray and the evil dead for $9.70 on blu ray at least in the usa i don't know about canada
I bought that same Army of Darkness from a buddy of mine for a dollar but it didn't have that book insert, I in fact didn't even know it came with one. but I'm looking on ebay and those evil dead book DVD's are a lot of money lol any place to get them cheap
I think his book was called "If Chins Could Kill". But yeah, great review. I own the Ultimate Edition of Evil Dead, and it's really great. You get a fold out poster inside, and the backgrounds behind the disks show off the other original posters made for the film. I have the THX edition of Evil Dead 2 also. I didn't know the Book of the Dead editions actually had pages inside! Now I have to get them and I'm pretty sure they are still fairly expensive. I agree that Evil Dead II is the best.
Evil Dead II - Anchor Bay UK box set which has all 3 movies (now OOP) has a fourth disc which includes... The first Evil Dead in it´s original 1.33:1 full screen unmatted version (with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS-ES 6.1 audio choices) -Sam Raimi interview from "The Incredibly Strange Film Show" -"The Living Love The Dead" featurette -"Dead Good Marketing" all new featurette that examines the Evil Dead 1 and 2 UK Advertising Campaign
I bought these books a while back. The batteries died, but they have a designated table. Hahaha. Best purchases I've made out of DVDs. Did you ever watch that show Todd and the Book of Pure Evil?
I just got Army of Darkness, the boomstick edition. I got it pretty cheap about $15. I got just because of this review. I've never since any of the Evil Dead films, know I plan to do so in order from each awesome edition I just got.
MMC is addictive, man. Fantastic reviews. I have to say, now that I found out that the original aspect ratio was full frame, I HAVE to get the Ultimate Edition. On a side note, I think that any true film fan, anyone who really loves film, HAS to care about things like aspect ratio. I once had a bitter argument with, I don't have to tell you, former girlfriend, about the aesthetic superiority of preserving original frames. It isn't a peripheral issue at all. Anyway, kudos!
you mentioned that you wanted to pick up the ultimate edition of evil dead, i saw it at blockbuster in sudbury ontario for 9.99 there were three of them, they have alot of horror themed movies right now, so check your local blockbuster, killer deal!
there is a remake of the evil dead coming out in 2013 i don't know if i should be worried or exited there have been some good horror remakes and some bad ones.
Oh, and I also agree that Evil Dead 2 is the best one and gets it just right. However, you should know that the european version of the screwhead edition on blu-ray doesn't have the DNR/Edge Enhancement issue, and after seeing the screenshots I REALLY want to try and pick that one up because it just looks GREAT.
I have the screw head edition I got it at wal Mary for five bucks on DVD it's a okay edition it's the alternative ending and a small bonus creating the deadites the only thing going for it is the beautiful slip cover
I have always wondered how the projectionist changes the reel if they find the film reeeealllllyyyyyy scary? You know Hell Raiser, Event Horizon or Annie?! I'm really scared of that Ginger girl!
I bought the Boomstick edition over the weekend for $30, and trust me it was worth every penny (i have watched it every day this week and i am still not tired of it).
@Darkman1233 Yes, Bruce was in the whole trilogy. The first, he was the wrestling announce Second, the usher at the theatre Third, maitre'd of the restaurant
Apparently R3 Army of Darkness is the best version to get, it's not cropped unlike Anchor Bay's, and also picture and sound quality is better. Evil Dead is excellent, I have the old Elite edition, as I heard that the Anchor Bay releases were slightly tweaked, such as lightening, and some effects sequences,
-"Bruce Campbell: Geek or God?" all new featurette that examines the continuing appeal of Evil Dead's charming superstar, Bruce Campbell -"Antihero" Stravinsky Gave Me Nightmares Evil Dead inspired Music Video -"Gallery of Decay"
Zaranyzerak what is the best Blu Ray version of the first Evil Dead? Or DVD? There are two import Blu Rays that are region free but I don't think they have any features. I think the region 1 Blu has some but I'm not sure if it has less than the DVD versions. I do own the Book/Dead edition but that's it!
Ah yes, the eternal question - Which version of Evil Dead do I get? The simple answer to that is...all of them. Well, sort of. The Region A Blu-ray is the same across all editions (just re-packaged form time to time), although there was a 2-disc limited edition that carried over most of the extras from the Ultimate Edition DVD set. Transfer-wise, they're all the same. Evil Dead 2 - 25th Anniversary Edition all the way. This is the remastered version. The previous release was actually so awful the DVD genuinely looked better. Pretty sure all subsequent re-releases use this transfer (as well they should, it's awesome) Army of Darkness - Scream Factory edition, bar none. It has all the cuts, all in HD and piles of extras. Beyond that, the editions I showed here for the packaging and bonus content. All depends how much of a completist you are. But if it's good transfers that are the main goal, those ones are the way to go.
I'll go for the limited edition Blu(I've seen it on Amazon) and I'm definitely going to get the 25th of ED 2 and SF AOD, I really need to upgrade those! In fact, I don't even have a DVD of AOD just a VHS lol! Thanks for the suggestions.
The Anchor Bay ED releases were pretty great for their time but I just need to move on to better things! It's 2017 and the DVDs are a bit dated(although still very good!) now, I still think Dawn/Dead ultimate edition from AB is still the definitive release of that movie, same with Near Dark. It just shows you even Blu Ray can't top some things!
Dude people should pay you to promote the release of every DVD and blu Ray. I just bought, Evil Dead Ultimate Edition, Evil Dead 2 tin case edition and Army of Darkness boomstick edition just because of this review. I got the boomstick edition really cheap, for like $12.
I'm going to have to disagree on the Book of the Dead for Evil Dead 2. I actually find the Divimax version on that disc to be just a hair better than the THX version. It doesn't blow it away by any means, it's just ever so slightly better in a few departments. I guess it comes down to your display, because both discs boast excellent (albeit different) transfers, as far as I'm concerned. Oh, and the 3-disc Ultimate Edition for the first film does indeed kick ass in all respects.
I decided to hang on to the DVD version of American Psycho because of how fucked up the transfer was on the Blu, they really were amateurs at the beginning of Blu Ray weren't they?!!
strangely you say most people like Army of Darkness best. Where im from Army of Darkness is the much maligned entry with most everyone liking either of the first 2 best
@William Johnstone the remake is directed and made by the same people who did the original, so be both very excited and VERY SCARED! this time around its going to be an all out horror fest so be warned: this new version will fuck.you.up.MENTALY.
@Zaranyzerak There was a video on Conan O' Brien's official youtube channel where the ad was actually PART of the video. You should have seen the douche rage in the comments... when they realized that none of their adblockers could skip it. :)
1:31 ha thats so " collector " of you. But I'm sure there must be some Macguyver way of doing it. i can so imagine Rosie pushing it as you chase her around the house.
@Zaranyzerak Well than.. hahahha. Aren't you lucky. I have the Trailer Park Boys DVD sets. Hahaha. Canada has the funniest shows. I love bubbles. LOVE. And when Ricky always says phrases that don't make any sense. The porno episode from season one is one of my favorites .And the episode where Bubbles raps.
I totally agree, why do they feel the need to DNR and gussy shit up in the US to the point where it entirely ruins the integrity of the film!? WHY!?!?!? WHYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?
EVIL DEAD IS THE SHIT!!!! Sam Raimi is really the true master of horror , If you watched "Drag me to hell ", you will know what am i talking about... He still got it xD
7:20 not just black paint, the fog machines add to that smell too.
I'm still looking for a copy of the the Evil Dead Ultimate Edition. :\
Evil Dead 2 25th Anniversary Blu Ray Edition is the best one to get next to the Book Of The Dead and Tin versions.
I need to do a new video since I have bought more evil dead bits, and one for my Living dead blu-ray collection
@Zaranyzerak you can get evil dead 2 25th anniversary for $10 dollars on blu ray and the evil dead for $9.70 on blu ray at least in the usa i don't know about canada

Ture, but if you watch my three videos I own ED2 twice on BRD as we were hoping the UK disc would not be the divimax print, we were wrong :(
MMC is addictive, man. Fantastic reviews. I have to say, now that I found out that the original aspect ratio was full frame, I HAVE to get the Ultimate Edition. you need to do a review of the new bluray versions (like the 25th anniversary)
you mentioned that you wanted to pick up the ultimate edition of evil dead, i saw it at blockbuster in sudbury ontario for 9.99 there were three of them, they have alot of horror themed movies right now, so check your local blockbuster, killer deal!
@DKrules9 nevermind, I resaw your review and you said the tin cover of evil Dead 2 is perhaps the best. Did you know what types of features are on it?
there is a remake of the evil dead coming out in 2013 i don't know if i should be worried or exited there have been some good horror remakes and some bad ones.

I tried getting the book of the dead editions off of amazon but they want too much for them.
Thank god I hope it stays that way some movie they should not mess with.and I would like to see another sequel to Evil Dead tho.

Are there any other versions of Evil Dead 2 I should get in terms of content? I'm a big fan of special features.
Where at? That's a really good deal!
@Darkman1233
Yes, Bruce was in the whole trilogy.
The first, he was the wrestling announce
Second, the usher at the theatre
Third, maitre'd of the restaurant
If they re-release them as many times on blu-ray as they have on DVD... who knows what'll be coming out!? :) ED2 is my favorite too.
Apparently R3 Army of Darkness is the best version to get, it's not cropped unlike Anchor Bay's, and also picture and sound quality is better.
Evil Dead is excellent, I have the old Elite edition, as I heard that the Anchor Bay releases were slightly tweaked, such as lightening, and some effects sequences,
are the book of the dead editions unrated?
How about a review of SILENT RUNNING, ZARDOZ, IDIOCRACY, WALL-E.
I have both the BRD's now and I dont think they are that bad really
evil dead are great movies, but what is lazer disc????
I need to start watching more scary movies. I haven't seen any of the Evil Dead films.
-"Bruce Campbell: Geek or God?" all new featurette that examines the continuing appeal of Evil Dead's charming superstar, Bruce Campbell

@Zaranyzerak k. No argument about that. I was thinking about the real fans who have Evil Dead 2 on scratchy VHS tape. Still like the review.
Who says "Army of Darkness" is their favorite? Where are they? Yemen? South Ossetia? What!?!
I decided to hang on to the DVD version of American Psycho because of how fucked up the transfer was on the Blu, they really were amateurs at the beginning of Blu Ray weren't they?!!
What aspect racio is evil dead 2 supposed to be
1.85:1
that DNR sure mess up the orginal Star Wars trilogy. I do hope that someday in my lifetime that it gets a just release.

theres games out of evil dead
The MGM R3 of AOD is the best picture
I think Bruce Cambell was in all 3 spider-man flicks he didnt do much but thats ok!
I totally agree, why do they feel the need to DNR and gussy shit up in the US to the point where it entirely ruins the integrity of the film!? WHY!?!?!? WHYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?
I have Evil Dead 2 the book of the dead and the tin edition
but I also have the Evil Dead Ultimate Edition
and all of them KICK HARD CORE ASS :D
no one is stopping you
his autobiography is called, "if chins could kill".
Thank you for noting the Book of the Dead editions look like shit.
So tired of hearing people talk about how great they look.
I prefer the first. Pure horror masterpiece. Absolute genius work from Raimi and co.
I know. It's disgusting at how much they fucked it up for the Book and Blu-ray editions.
I think u meant... "if chins could kill"
:p
EVIL DEAD IS THE SHIT!!!! Sam Raimi is really the true master of horror , If you watched "Drag me to hell ", you will know what am i talking about... He still got it xD
Heard that was going to be the next bad remake.lol Please Hollywood leave that one alone.
