I never saw Arsenio so mad before. I loved how passionate he was right there. Didn't back down, didn't let it go, but went head to head with them and told them and said something that I feel was so an important thing to say; he's had gay guests, but the audience might not know they are go and it's no one's damn business. Loved that!
I think, if I try to remember way back then, I vaguely remember this episode when it was on TV. I was pretty damn young though. lol But out of every talk show host that was on back then, it was HIS show I loved to watch. As a out and proud gay man of color it breaks my heart that Arsendio had to experience that. He has NEVER been homophobic nor against having anyone who was gay on his show the problem is these "advocates" wanted artist who unfortunately were not popular to the audience. Many people of color don't know who Gus Van Want is, that's not his fault.
Where was this outrage when In Living Color was on. I never saw these "advocates" on the show. Why because it wasn't a show that pretain to the white counterparts.
If these "advocates" were around today they would be slient for people like Tyler Perry, Nate Parker, and Kevin Heart. Actors whom have ACTUALLY showcase their hatred for the LGBTQ Community. So my final point if you want better represention for gays in Hollywood, then make sure you are doing it for ALL people, not just your white privilege.

Uh, Dude, In Living Color was a giant success on the FOX network, whose primary audience was white. Probably because except for Saturday Night Live, there wasn't much sketch comedy on TV. I am a white guy raised in culturally and racially integrated communities. My friends and I watched shows based on if we enjoyed them, not based on if a show was for any specific age group or demographic. And you know what else, I was living in Louisiana. Deep in the American South. All the racism on social media did not occur in my neighborhoods. So don't go thinking white people didn't watch and laugh at In Living Color. It was comic genius. They had Jim Carrey. Also, they did create characters, Men on Film, that gave a comic nod to gay culture. It was stereotypical, but since shows on Major Networks like Arsenio Hall offered no representation, In Living Color was appreciated. Gay men coming of age today maybe will have a lighter struggle than we did. But no, Arsenio Hall was outwardly no friend to gay men simply because he did not gay bash, or because Elton John was on the show. And the lack of representation was as much Arsenio Hall's fault as all celebrity culture of the time for not standing up when he knew things were not right. You might not remember, but this was not just about sexuality. AIDS, now known as advanced HIV disease, was killing people who most likely contracted the disease due to lack of information given to most of the country until the mid-1980's. How many lives could have been saved if it were not for homophobia? How many people said nothing as that happened?

You're missing the whole point that he did have gays on his show and had no beef with gays. And actually people do care about who gay people sleep with. It's clear that you don't like gay people because they sleep with people of thier own gender. People want to prevent them from getting married, many people will physically attack gay people for being gay. "America.... too caught up in making homosexuality stand out." That's kind of a stupid statement. America hasn't been trying to make shit stand out. Gay rights activists and such have been trying to resolve some issues though and there has been public debate. Not to mention if you support tge gay cause in entertainment its practically a ticket of success. We celebrate gay people announcing their status. That is forging and painting an imageof superiority.

No one needs to know your sexual orientation. You don't deserve anything more than anyone else does because of your sexual orientation (or gender, or color, for that matter). I really wish more people carried themselves like Arsenio did in that segment, and I wish more people would agree like the crowd did. These days, someone speaking up like Arsenio would get bored out of the building for speaking the truth like that. We need that 90s mentality back.

So you're a gender abolitionist? I'm a gender abolitionist. Unfortunately, we still don't live in that world. In fact, we're far away from it. Perhaps decades but I'm sure it's about another 200 years or even more from now. We still have too many conservatives moralizing sex and attacking non cis people and they lie to their constituents for power. Unfortunately, I disagree with you. We don't need that 90s mentality back because the 90s didn't fix any of this. It just sorta progressed as it does with a changing society but it's clear that it wasn't good enough.

It’s a thing that I don’t like about some members of my community - the thin skin. I understand we all have our own experiences, and to some, jokes feel like harassment. However, I have always understood that jokes are not the problem, intent is the problem. I know when a persons intent is to ridicule me and when it is to make me laugh. My community is filled with big and bold characters and to laugh at a caricature is not the same as being bullied.

Those activists are the worse kind. Misdirected anger, shouting slogans at people to shut them up, generally acting like arseholes. As a gay man myself, I would love to reach out to Arsenio and apologize for the gay men that caused the scene on that show. I've watched that clip multiple times and I'm very proud that Arsenio stood up to those guys, and played it on the broadcast by the network. Things were a little bit different for the gay community then than they are now (that's no excuse), but that scene was embarrassing to me because that was just not the way that gay activist group should have handled their issue (calling him out during the taping of the show), and I don't want the rest of society to get the impression all gay people are like that. We're not. That is NOT the way to gain respect, acceptance, or at least tolerance, and the more they act a fool like that, the harder it will be for us to achieve those things. Anyway, Arsenio, I apologize for those idiots and to everyone who saw that segment.

You can actually see him towards the beginning of the segment just as Arsenio starts walking up the stairs, he's a blonde dude in the background visible for a second just behind his neck. In order to prevent the audience from actually getting aggressive, they came out ahead of time to address the audience that as this is a TV show most elements are scripted, here's what to expect, please either cheer in support, or remain silent. The "protestors" were literally supporting actors for Arsenio's performance.
