WWII German M40 helmet vs Postwar Finnish M40 helmet!

  • This video is a comparison of an original WWII German M40 Q64 helmet shell vs a Postwar manufacturer size 64 M40 helmet. The postwar compares extremely well and is a good alternative to an original that can cost a few $100. The postwar shells can be bought for around $50. These are fantastic reenacting helmets once restored to WWII specs!
A storm was coming so it got dark during the video so I apologize ☺

A lot of them were very similar to each other with little to no differences at all due to the fact that the finish helmet was built on german machines

One other difference to note is that the two front/side split pin holes on the Finnish M40/M55 helmets are drilled a couple of MM lower than the wartime German M40s. This can cause the German liners to sit a wee bit lower than on the original wartime German stahlhelms'

Finnish M40/55’s are made the same as German ones, some mainly off the same assembly line

The brow on the Finnish helmet is slightly higher because the amount of steel taken up in the rolled edges is slightly different to that of the German ones. You can distinguish a post war Finnish helmet from an original German one by the roughness of the inside of the rolled edge. The German helmet should be trim and clean on the inside of the rolled edge, whereas the inside of the Finnish rolled edge is more crude.

How did you fill in the holes on the Finnish M40/55? Did you weld it or did you use epoxy putty?

I noticed your original helmet is with out aluminum oxide I think so not all ww2 m-40 helmets have aluminum oxide?

    muchas gracias y saludos

IF the reproduktion is a bit dodgy, use a splinter-pattern cover.

Spray it that’s all you have to do spray it and you can use sand, dirt, aluminum oxide for texture spray paint it and if you buy textured paint you don’t have to worry about it

What about repurposed Finnish Helmets? I got one that has Been Sanitized. That's when they fill in all markings so they don't get in trouble

      @gunsforevery1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

What makes you think it’s been “sanitized”? The only “proof” is a large retailer said they MAY be sanitized. And this generally only refers to m35 helmets. Not M40s

Well this makes since now... all the reproductions being made are made off the Finnish helmet not the German helmet as they describe... i can tell by the front of the Finnish helmet it looks like a reproduction. The Finnish bill curve goes back further a little bit than the original

For those tips to be useful, one must already own a certified original helmet. Annoying cracking noises from the handling of the camera, cicadas and nearby traffic. Plus, as admitted to by the video maker, he was losing daylight. It may be wise to make those videos inside instead.

I hate my I. M.A. m40/55..I paid for hand select and they sent me one that the top is all dented and it's too small. I wanted a size 60 but all they had was a liner size 59. I can get it on but it's tighter than I prefer. I should have returned it but I didn't. It's going on ebay soon along with the Chinese m35 I picked up from At the Front.

My IMA Finnish helmet is way too tight also. And i gave them my exact head size for a 57 liner, it is stamped 57 on the leather but its way too small for my head.

@@riverwindflutes Sizes change over time for some reason, thats why when I buy vintage or surplus caps or helmets I get one size up.

Did you buy the scratch and dent cheaper version or the standard version? If I remember the price difference between the two is about $30
