Silver Nanoparticle Synthesis and Luminol Catalysis

  • Recipe for making silver nanoparticles and a follow up experiment to check their catalytic properties.
    Silver nanoparticles are made by mixing silver nitrate with a reducing agent. In this reaction, 0.001 M AgNO3 (10 mL) is added dropwise to 0.002 M NaBH4 (30 mL). If the Ag nanoparticles are not going to be used quickly after, a small amount of 4% polyvinyl alcohol can be added to cap the nanoparticles and limit aggregation. The PVA will bond to the surface of the nanoparticles and prevent them from merging together.
    Every solution used must be with distilled water.
    The second part of the experiment uses the silver nanoparticles as a catalyst for the reaction between luminol (0.01 M in 0.1 M NaOH) and potassium ferricyanide (0.1 M). The chemiluminescence is brighter and fades faster for the solution with the silver nanoparticles added.
    The nanoparticles can be sized using a spectrophotometer by looking at the peak wavelength as well.

    Is there any material to replace potassium ferricyanide? I really want to conduct this experiment but only potassium ferricyanide is missing. Does the catalytic reaction still occur if I replace potassium with hemoglobin?

    You should have reversed the process, by adding the silver nitrate first. This will give you a lot more control on preventing agglomeration of the silver atoms.

    But it is known that luminol is not soluble in water, is not?
    Is it soluble in the hydroxide solution (NaOH)?

      Yes, it is more soluble in basic solution.

      Ok, let me see. I did my undergraduate thesis also on nanostructured materials. As part of my thesis I synthesized silver nanoparticles.

    Can we reverse this process, i mean can we add AgNo3 first thn borohydride?? I did this but at the time of stirring, it suddenly turn Ashy. I think this is due to aggregation. What to do??

    why NaBH4 keep in ice? what is the molarity of NaBH4 and AgNO3?

      The NaBH4 decomposes in water and the ice limits this. The concentrations and amounts for everything are in the description.

    Hi Scott, great work.
    Do you know of a way to separate the Silver nano particles ?
    I need to produce a highly conductive ( electrical not ionic ) epoxy resin binder system for my Battery research and as such would need these nano particles.

      Centrifuge at high speeds. This worked well for larger silver nanoprisms, but I never tried it for the smaller seed particles produced in this video. If that doesn't work, you could try to remove the water under high vacuum.

      There's conductive glues and epoxies available commercially. Particles this small probably wouldn't be very conductive anyway.
