You got it right! This is the shift, they changed their look ( no more eye liner n hard dark make up ) and the songs moved from the hard rap to the version that brought them to fame.
This is apart of the BU aka Bts universe its a story line and lore as well just so you guys know. There is a mobile game that goes with this and a webtoons series as well there are so much more videos for a deeper dive into the BU but this song is one of many
Also, short films and more music videos moving forward are all part of the BU. It's a whole experience on its own. In fact, the MV's imagery after this often aren't always all that related to the songs...lol. They move the BU storyline along. But you should keep in mind that the MV's in the BU aren't telling their own story - they are telling the story of the BU. You got the shift, but you only barely scratched the surface, guys. 🤣
@Mix It Up Podcast, you have now entered into the Bangtan universe! Fictional storyline that all seven members of BTS have a story behind each in a series of, Webtoon, book liners from albums, connections of music videos and 7 Short videos that represents the seven members of BTS fictional characters. You’re correct they did change over in 2016 three years after their debuted, their concept and whole aesthetic changed it became more serious more thought-provoking and more social consciousness format. Please, just remember this is fictional stories this is not true stories you might’ve seen the 19+ version of “I Need U” Music video this is the beginning of the Bangtan universe. It’s very interesting and very complexed oh and there’s also a online video game that goes with the whole story! 1. I need u 2. Run 3. Young Forever 4. You never walk alone album & MV 5. Begin MV and short MV (Jungkook) 6. Lie MV and short MV ( JiMin ) 7.Stigma MV and short MV ( V) 8.First Love MV and Short MV ( Suga) 9. Reflection MV and short MV ( RM) 10. Mama MV and Short MV ( J-Hope) 11. Awake MV and Short MV(Jin) The “Wings “Album Consist of 15 songs that feature the solo individual BTS members songs that I list above plus the title track, ” Blood Sweat and Tears” and this song particularly is a connection with the Bangtan universe the fictional story which is connected with the novel by Hermann Hesse, “Damien“ about self discovery and making good and bad choices ! And that music video particularly you will hear RM the leader of BTS recite a paragraph from the book. As well is there is a short intro by J-Hope where he dances and raps in the MV Intro: Boy meets Evil”. RM in the beginning recites a paragraph from the same book before. There are so many albums that I could list here but this paragraph will be so much longer it’ll turn into an essay! 😆 So this is a different type of rabbit hole this is a fictional story line this is not their true story and their real life but this is how the transition became more serious more social consciousness more into societal situation’s with young people in their teens and 20s! BTS are very social conscious artist they started to become more aware of what is going on in their own community in their own country and throughout the world that’s why they became the spokesperson and collaborated with UNICEF campaign. “Love yourself speak yourself campaign which is albums that BTS have done that donated proceeds to the “end violence around the world especially young people“ made a speech in 2017 at the United Nations 73rd General assembly it’s in English and you could watch it on TH-cam where he talked about this subject matter and also introduced himself and well as his ideas as a young person. Total of three times that they spoke at United Nations on several different subject matter but that one was the kick off and you can tell that it became more of a social conscious effort in their music and their ideas to come across that concerned the younger generation and matter fact all generations was included. I am sure that there are other BTS ARMYs. Who can expand more on the Bangtan universe and all that it entails this is just a outline synopsis and this is not even half of what I wrote in my comment L O L. Again I am sorry for the long explanation but it is impossible to make it in the short categorization for you to understand I hope you do read this and I hope that you will consider doing the Bangtan universe it is complex it can be a little frustrating it might be Little confusing. Too! A different rabbit hole than the other Music discography of BTS. Good Luck BoraHae 💜🙏🏼
lol 😂you just thought you were half way through…you haven’t even started 👆….You will probably need a separate BTS only channel that’s what a lot of reactors do😂
You're correct that this is when they solidified their bonds and became stronger socially (cant be censored or stopped from discussing difficult topics)
Their stuff before was critiquing life as students. This was definitely the change into personal things and the upsetting process of growing up and going through hardships as young people.
Not only was it the shift, but it was also the first stop to there on going storyline, which bangtan and army refer to as the BU verse. Its lore based that we see through various mv, notes, short films/highlight reel, webtoons and even a mobile game, all in all its a rabbit hole of mind blowing greatness.
Yes Obi Wan,this was indeed their fulcrum, this and the whole trilogy of these albums. You have stepped into the twilight zone too. I'm sure more ARMYS will fill you in. Thank you for sharing 🤗💜🫡
You have started off in the correct order- next to tie in the rest is RUN. Another Army, posted here extensively of the order. I also recommend watching something like from nobodies to legends- as BTS backstory is literally a rags to riches underdog victory.
This was song that brought me in. Just FYI we weren’t purple yet at that point. V coined the term borahae in 2016 after concert when we covered ARMY bombs with purple as a fan project
This song really starts the Lore of the Bangtan Universe, or the BU. There is a very elaborate and detailed story line that flows through most of the albums that once you dive into it you may not be able to dig back out. There are books, games, videos, etc. with these stories for each of the guys and Jin, JK to a lesser extent, ties the stories all together. Brace yourselves, ARMYs have a lot to say about this if you are interested. I love that the videos stand on their own without knowing the BU, but when you do the hints, clues, and symbolism is thick. I'm glad you like the song and the video.
Brief storyline of this mv (Ignoring the BTS Universe storyline stuff - trigger warning): - Jin's part of the video is mostly symbolism - these guys are like a flower that he's trying to save from dying but he's stuck in a room only able to look out the window while his friends suffer their fates - RM works at a petrol station, trying to get out of poverty. Faces disrespectful customers. - JK without his friends is left to the whim of street life - J-Hope has a health and drugs related issue - Jimin has issue with trauma related to drowning - Suga has unaliving issues, related to trauma and fire - V deals with domestic abuse, one day decides to save his sister from it
Brief background on the storyline: their albums included booklets with notes that told some of the storyline and there was a webcomic that gave context to most of it. I do not recommend the BTS Universe storyline to new and more casual explorers of BTS or those who are here for mostly the music, as the storyline includes many angsty YA themes and includes stuff like time-travel and most of it is explored properly on an App game they created called the BU Story which has been discontinued. If you want a brief summary of the story see spoilers below: - - - Young troubled boys become friends, they need to stick together or their lives fall apart. One of them can groundhog day rewind time and tries his best to save each of them from their troubles (which usually ended in them dying or becoming trapped in hardship). Turns out the only solution is to spread self-love and self-worth to them (hence their music from the albums Love Yourself: Answer and the Map of the Soul series) I'm not sure if the storylines will continue personally, they had an app game called BTS World that explored different stories and that one has discontinued also.
They are right, there is a change, this video is strong, they go from being singers making music, happy, to showing what many young or old people around the world live or perhaps lived. Without a doubt, not everyone has strong problems, but the majority at some point in their life. He has had some type of problem that has often been overwhelming, the difference is that BTS feels close, he is not a distant, unattainable artist, someone who makes music and the music industry tells you to buy because listening to him is the best, not they sing and They make music that reflects our own experiences and based on that they formulate ideas of improvement, positive ideas and many of consolation. That is what makes them different and that is why the ARMY exists. Thank you for the reaction video. Greetings.
Yes, people have mentioned in comments about the BU. But i would love for you guys to try and dig into the story and see your option on the storyline. If you do the BU I think you would appreciate they boys and videos a lot better. Good luck it makes you think.
You used the phrase "darker timeline" to describe Suga's character in the video. If you read the webcomic that explains the bigger fictional story of the Bangtan Universe, you'll see that you hit it right on the head! Notably, in an earlier version of this song the chorus lyrics were "I Need You Friend" rather than "I Need You Girl." And that's much truer to the message conveyed by the music videos in this era.
The Bangtan Universe is a story about the lives and friendships of 7 boys who met in school: Hoseok: abandoned as a child and raised in an orphanage. RM: from a working class( poverty) family, struggling as the main breadwinner of his household. Jimin: Witnessed an event as a young child that left him traumatized, affecting his mental and physical health. Taehyung: he and his sister raised by an abusive alcoholic father. JK: a lost soul who feels alive when facing dangerous situations. Yoongi: dealing with the death of his mother from a house fire. And guilt he feels from that same event. Jin: son to a wealthy family, finding his true family amongst his friends. He is pulled into an unimaginable plot to save all of them. This story is carried across several forms of media, starting with this music video. If you ever find yourself curious enough, there are places you can check for the material to look into.
Just want to add to the other comments that if you're in doubt whether a MV is a part of the BU, look in the description below - it'll be marked "BU content". 💜
This music video and album release was a shift in their physical image. They stepped away from the over gimmicky visual concept that is common in kpop and began dressing more fitting for the time. Musically it wasn't as in your face as previous singles, but as far as them shifting to more socially conscious music isn't true, because BTS have sung on bigger issues from the beginning.

THERES A GAME??
@@_.hybrids._1680 I think she means BTS World, but they shuttered that game last year.
Yes, this is the shift. It’s also the song that gained them their first win on an important music show in South Korea.
