Hello, Carole! This was such a great collab! I’ve loved seeing you and Izzy’s journey with fitting this pattern. I know Joy Bernhardt loves tissue fitting but I agree with you that it looks like so much work, haha. I do love your first version as well, the fit looks so good on you. Thanks for sharing with us, Carole! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany
Hi Tiffany, thank you so much for your lovely comments! Yes it was SO much effort but a fun thing to have a go at. Not sure I will ever repeat pattern fitting, especially for a T shirt 😂 Have a great week and hope you are feeling better soon xx
Thanks Trish, it was a MASSIVE amount of effort which I'm not used to unless I do Lutterloh 🤣. You can but try these things can't you but it doesn't mean you will repeat them! See you sssoooooonnn ❤️❤️😘
Both tops look good - I have the same problem with the lines. Still learning fitting. Just recently made a Pattern Emporium (sleeveless) and had to petite the armhole. Pamela’s Patterns have this technique on her patterns and it does help.
Thank you so much for watching and your comment. I was interested to hear about the pattern you made, I will look that up as I really do think the armscye is a problem. Thanks again 🧵😊
Miss Carole! Both tees look great on you! They accentuate your cute and envious shape. I have to admit that I am not willing to make the effort the P&P fitting process requires. My housework wheel of fate has me cleaning the fridge. Easy!! Just so you'll know . . . you are an absolute delight, love. ❤
Oh Miss Lorraine you make me blush 🥰. That P and P system is SO much effort, especially for a T shirt and I can see why so many people just make it up like normal patterns! I think your wheel inspired me last week as I had to clean the fridge too 😂, that meant of course that little bits of chocolate that I keep in there just had to be eaten 😉. Thanks as ever for making me smile ❤️
I love Joy! But if you have watched her for a while, you know she strongly believes in bust darts even in a t-shirt. Both tops look good on you. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I have watched Joy for years on and off and yes, a bust dart if I really wanted the perfect fit would be the way to go. If I was sewing a really small flowered print or something then I might consider it but no way on a stripe! Thanks so much for being kind about the tops I did make, it was a fun thing to try anyway 🧵😊
I tried the p&p pattern tissue fit dress absolutely disaster I put straight in the bin. Joy does have great faith in p&p doesn’t she but she always uses a 3way mirror maybe that’s the trick for fitting. Lovely content Carole 😊
Thanks Carol, if the first one hadn't come out so well mine would be heading in the bin too! You are right, I need a fancy 3 way mirror like Joy. Thanks for watching 🧵😊
Way to hang in there, Carole! Sounds like you learned a lot! What an epiphany for you about the armscye! Please let us know if that works when you try it! 😘💗
Thanks Andra, that was a lot of effort for a T shirt but Izzy had a worse nightmare than me!! So interesting about the Armscye isn't it? I need to explore that and I will get back to you! 😘💗
In the 60’s and 70’s my mom and grandma made most of my clothing. Tissue fitting was all they did. Until I started watching u-tube sewing videos, I had no idea how much everyone goes through for a good fit. It does seem nice to have something you love to wear and not just something to wear!
Hi there, my Mum also made a lot of my clothing back in the 60s! I was so interested to hear that yours used tissue fitting, that is really fascinating as it isn't the easiest of processes! I loved the last bit of your message, having something to wear that we love and we know what went into making it makes it a treasured piece of clothing like you say, not just something to wear. Thanks for watching 🧵😊
Good video, Carole! Well done and nice to see your tissue fitting process and pattern adjustments. Sewing is a constant learning process, there's no getting around that. All one can do is to embrace the lessons learned. Your darker top came out very well and I agree that the PP method made an improvement. Your striped top: My suggestion: Re-work the neckline into a V-neck, to see if that takes care of (some) lines and, hopefully, make the fit better. If there are lines on your print top (there might be a few), they are hardly noticeable. The busier the print, the less noticeable as people will be admiring the print and distracted from seeing the lines. Generally, I don't see "lines" unless they are pointed out. I'm just looking at the overall garment and fabric, as I'm sure most of your viewers are too. If you decide to do a video on the arm syce adjustment, I'd sure love to see it. On to Izzy's video! 🥰💜 Dori
Thanks so much Dori for all your tips and kind comments. It is funny, I am wearing a V neck t shirt today I made from a New Look pattern, a straight size 10 and it is fine!! Go figure 😂. I need to stop worrying I think as I was looking around the other day at people in T shirts, they were all pulling and gaping! I am going to keep the striped top as it is but that that was a great suggestion of yours to turn into a V as I really wonder if that was what made the difference. I may well do an armscye adjustment..... when things get quieter 😂. Have a great week my friend 💗xx
I’m amazed that someone who’s sewn lots of tee shirts has gotten tripped up by a new (tee shirt) pattern. Just shows how few garments I’ve made.😉 Both shirts look pretty good to me, but my mother has always been just as critical of her own wonderful sewing projects as you seem to be of yours. She’s always told me that a true seamstress rips 2-3 times as much as she sews.😳🤣
Norma you may be right, I seem to get more critical of my sewing the more sewing vlogs I watch! Before I never noticed if the fit wasn't quite right and was happy with it, what have I become? 🤣. I love that saying about a seam ripper and that is truer than we think! Jen is an excellent seamstress and she spends a lot of time with her seam ripper! Thanks for watching 🧵😊
Hello Carole P.S Joy bernhardt also in talking about fitting patterns That we sometimes notice only need full bust adjustment but narrow shoulders, sway back and the size of arms eye makes such a difference Hope that helps you find a perfect fit 😊
Thanks so much Joanne. I think I need to take the time to rewatch some of Joy's videos as she really does know what she is talking about! Have a good week 🧵😊
Thanks so much Nancy, I avoid V necks as I thought it would draw attention to my scraggy neck but actually I think it does the opposite! Hope you are having success with Dress No 4 🤞🏼😊🧵
Really interesting. Thoroughly recommend the Palmer Plesch fitting book. I’ve managed, with some effort, to fit woven tops which has much improved the wearability of the tops and dresses I make.
Thank you so much for that idea of the book. I am so glad you have had success with the patterns, I am sure the system is good and I loved the fact the alteration lines are already on the patterns. Thank you for watching 🧵😊
OMG - what a lot of work. I think both T shirts look really good and there are no noticeable lines. Not sure I would have the patience to go down that rabbit hole so good on you both for trying! 😅. I will stick to oversized ones I think. 😊. Lynne
It really was a lot of work wasn't it! I don't think I would have had the patience either if I wasn't doing a collab with Izzy where I was so sure she would get a good result and like the Big 4 patterns!! You are right, why don't I just make oversized T shirts?😂 Thanks so much for watching 🧵😊
Great collaboration with Izzy! I have watched your channel for a while but have never commented, always enjoy listening to you and seeing what you are making. This was so interesting for such a simple t-shirt it was allot of adjustments. I have used the Palmer & Pletch tissue fit on many patterns and have had great success. I agree that it’s best to have a sewing buddy, usually my husband.I find sewing with knits is always interesting as you can use the same pattern and a slightly different knit and they come out so different just when you think you have it figured out. Wanted to mention I use the cardigan Kwik Sew pattern that you use all the time. I have made it with the hood for casual and the tapered for nice sweater knits. Always a success with that one. Happy Sewing, thanks for sharing your sewing journey and have a great holiday, give my best to Mickey and the gang ❤
Hi Kathleen, thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. You are so kind in your message, I really appreciate that. Bravo to you for using this system, it was fun to try but just for a t shirt it really wasn't worth the effort. As you say, even though I thought the fabric was the same it obviously wasn't or that V made a difference. I am glad to hear you have had success with the Kwik sew cardigan pattern, it is such a shame that they don't make patterns anymore for clothes isn't it? I love so many of theirs. I will pass on your regards to Mickey, he is just recovering from the excitement of being away in the Holiday Home this weekend and being dragged up and down hills 😂. Have a good week 🧵😊
Of course I wish your family the best but I meant give my best to Mickey Mouse and that gang. Did not realize your husband’s name is Mickey as well or did I misunderstand? Thank you for your response, you are such a positive lovely person.
@@kathleenkolb3316 oh that's hilarious! My dog is named Mickey (after the mouse) I just assumed you were a dog lover 🤣. Oh dear silly me of course you meant THE Mickey 😂. I'll give him a hug from you. Thanks so much for being so kind ❤️
Thank you so much for sharing how you actually tried on the tissue paper. I didn’t even try it that way because I knew how difficult it would be by myself. I’m really impressed with the fit you managed to get on both tops to be honest. And now that you mentioned it, if you play around with the armscye, it might make the few lines that remain go away!! I loved playing along with you on this. I’m not writing off Big 4 patterns completely just yet… but I won’t be attempting another knit pattern. Xx 💞
Yep, trying on that tissue paper pattern was AWKWARD but as I had seen Joy do it I thought it must work 😂. Anyway back to the tried and true for me and I expect you too. Can't wait for our next project together, your choice next time! Thanks again 💗💗x
Fitting is my least favorite part of sewing. But the cool thing about spending the time getting a great fit is that you can use that same pattern over and over again. Just change the sleeve length or even sleeve details, the neck (v-neck, round neck, etc.) and you have many different looking t-shirts. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
You are right Carol, once you do master the perfect fit that pattern becomes like gold! However I have learnt in the past like this time, different fabrics can make a huge difference even if you think they are the same. Thanks so much for watching 🧵😊
That's exactly how we made our pattern fits in a Palmer/Pletsch fitting class I took -- we pinned the pattern together and put it on. You know how thin the pattern paper is? Talk about rips!! But the top made did turn out to be a really good fit. Can you imagine doing that sort of fit on every single top pattern you work with?
Oh wow Deb really? That is awesome as you know what I went through then 😂 I can't believe the paper didn't actually rip with me pulling it this way and that! No I cannot imagine ever doing it again let alone for every pattern. Thanks so much for watching 🧵😊💗💗
Congratulations on a great fitting T-shirt! It looks great on. I think the arm hole is too high, also. Jennifer has a bunch of fitting episodes, some tackle that very problem. I’ve tried Palmer & Pletch, and you’re right, you need another pair of hands. I tried to get my husband to help me one time, and it was a disaster! The best fitting videos I’ve found is from Nancy Zieman, she was the best at it. Her system is much easier to do. Don’t give up, you’ll get it. Have a great weekend! Off to watch Izzy now.😃
Thanks Sue, the armholes are too high and to be honest lots of the T shirts I have made before have the same issue it is just I have never noticed it! I have watched a couple of Nancy's videos since then and she had another lady on talking about lines on T shirts and yet both of them were wearing ill fitting T shirts 😂. I think as we are just talking about a basic t shirt here I am going to stop worrying too much. If I bought a T shirt from a shop it would be exactly the same! Thanks so much for watching my struggle 🧵😊
Thanks for doing this video. I really like the V neck on you and the Breton T is a classic that is very hot right now. I have used this Palmer Pletch method twice now and have had some success with it. It makes me think I should use it any time I am making a close fitting garment like a blouse or pants. May I suggest you go up one size with this pattern. This should give you the room you need in the arm scye and hips. You can always grade in at the waste if need be. Also, it helps if you draw a verticle line in the centre front and back of your tank top with frxion marker. This will help to visualize that distance of where the pattern piece is hitting you relative to that line. You are right, it’s a little challenging to do without a helper, especially when trying to visualize the back. Also, when you look from the side you want to ensure that line directs the body right in the middle the entire length of your torso. I would challenge you to revisit this pattern fitting technique for a woven pattern.
Yay I am up with a trend! Thanks for telling me that and your really kind comments. Interesting to hear you have had success with this system and I am sure it is good just a lot of bother for a T shirt. Someone else mentioned about going up a size but then I know that the shoulders would need adjustment as I have narrow shoulders. I tried that before in a T shirt and ended up having so much extra fabric. Thanks so much for all the other tips you have given me. 🧵😊
LOVE this collab! I am making this exact top Right now! I did pin the tissue and I also think it is a whole Lotta work to go through and I noticed the armscye feels tight with the tissue fitting but yet that is not addressed in the instructions on how to adjust the armscye? I was at that point where they said you could get away without the FBA, so I skipped it. I’m about to try it on we’ll see how it goes…… thank you so much for sharing how you did this and it was so funny to hear you mention joy because I think that’s where I first saw her do the whole method in a video. I think all of your tops came out fabulous especially that V-neck.❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Mary... so much effect for just a T shirt isn't it! I can't believe you are making it at the same time. You are right, there was no mention of the armscye at all and it is TIGHT! Hope you didn't have to do an FBA but to be honest that was the easy bit. The V neck was the best one and I will keep that pattern for future use. Joy is so funny isn't she and there isn't much she can't do! Have a good week 🧵😊
Well you look fantastic in any t-shirt you make, so there you go. That armscye thing sounds intriguing. I'm interested to see how you fare. I run into the same thing with those lines. ❤😘
Now that is a lovely thing to say and if only it were true 😂😘. I look around though and so many people wear ill fitting bought T shirts so why do I worry?! Because we are sewists and we are never happy! 🤣. Thanks so much for watching me struggle with this when you made the same pattern with no issues 🥰😘😘xx
Hi, Carole, since the pattern tissue was about an inch off in the front and the back, would you not go up on the size? I haven't watched the video past the point where you were talking about doing a full bust adjustment, but that's where I struggle where you are right now.❤
Hi Zelda, if I went up a size the shoulders wouldn't have fitted and the pattern said you could allow to be at least 1/2 inch anyway as sewing in Jersey. The first one I made came out well it just went wrong with the second one! 🧵😊
Fantastic video. Palmer and Pletch do a fitting book/guide which I bought from SewEssential. It is extremely complex so I haven’t taken on board all the finer points, however my understanding is that any adjustments should be made in a particular order which I believe is top down middle out. This would mean making sure that the arm hole and waist are in the right place before making any FBA etc. Hope this helps. Lovely v neck T-shirt regardless! Best wishes
Thanks Carol, I can't say I will be buying that book! As T shirts are the only thing I have a problem with that I can't fix with a tweak here and there I will just put up with the lines. Interesting though about fixing other issues before an FBA though and I'll bear that in mind. Thanks again 🧵😊
Hello Carole I think that you are on the right track Joy bernhart has a lot of pattern fitting videos One dedicated to palmer method She also recently talked about the indie patterns fitting tips and why they don't fit by cup size that the indie patterns use Explore a few videos We as sewists want a better fit than ready made Happy sewing Take care 👗👚🪡🧵✂️👖
Joanne you hit the nail on the head when you said we want a better fit than ready made! If I look around at people in T shirts I NEVER see one that isn't lined or stretched. I don't have any bought ones anymore so I can't judge from my own. I have watched Joy on and off for years and she is such a fantastic seamstress. None of this means I won't still wear the ones I have made though it was just a fun experiment to do with Izzy. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and watch 🧵😊
Both makes are great! You may want to checkout My Bucolic Life, as Marie did some Palmer Ptetsch patterns. As for me, I don't think I could manage manipulating pattern tissue without total tearing it to bits. Lol.
Thanks Theresa, I don't think I would ever use this system again to be honest but it was fun to explore with Izzy. I think my Lutterloh system would be better but I haven't got a T shirt pattern with them sadly. I need to stop being so fussy as when I look around, no T shirts fit anyone perfectly! Thanks so much for watching 🧵😊
I think both your shirts turned out very well, although I understand you might not be as happy with the striped one because you wanted no drag lines at all - but it looks pretty good from here! I have that pattern - opened it up once, saw all the things involved with making it and stuffed everything back in the envelope - yes, I'm a lazy coward, LOL!
Thank you so much. You did make me laugh about being put off by all those instructions and I know exactly what you mean 🤣. Would I have tackled it without the collab with Izzy, probably not! I'm ok with the T shirts and will definitely wear them. Thanks again 🧵😊
Looking at the pattern tissue when you tried it on, it seems as if it could be that the bust point needs lowering. The point where the FBA lines meet I assume is the bust apex. I have seen this mentioned as a reason for those lines, as well as lowering the underarm. I have discovered that I have to move bust darts down for woven fabrics so I am going to look into it for knits. The problem is the bust point is not marked on many indie patterns (I use them mainly).
Oh my word yes it is! It's about 2 inches too high, that was a great spot by you. I've never had that issue before with any other big 4, it is normally spot on. No wonder I had a problem 😂. Thanks so much for bringing my attention to that, I wonder if anyone else spotted that? 😊🧵
@@socarole66 I mainly have that problem with big 4 patterns, but I've only made woven garments from them (since getting back into garment sewing about 10 years ago). For knits (and some wovens) I have a multitude of indie patterns which I mainly use, although I have had a problem with one of them, but I couldn't be be bothered messing about with it again, as I have a few more similar designs that don't need fiddling with!
Lovely video, Carole. I get how hard it is to get a great fit on anything I love both versions of your t-shirt. Is it possible that stripe fabric has less stretch than the other one? Ot it is different weight. That may affect fit too
Thanks Agata. It's so weird as I don't have a real problem with fitting and why I obsess over drag lines on T shirts I will never know as if you look around, everyone has them 🤣. I think perhaps the brown fabric was ever so slightly lighter in weight and as you say, that can easily make a difference. Ahh sewing can be so frustrating at times 🤣.
Hi Pamela! Thanks for watching. I've just checked back the video and funnily enough the top I was wearing was the same pattern as the T shirt I wore on this weeks Friday Sews! Butterick 6859 which I have had a lot of success with. 🧵😊

Off to watch Izzy now.😃
I will have to look up Nancy Zieman per a viewer recommendation. Your video was very interesting. Pinning a paper pattern seems like a lot of work.
It really was Lori and I have to say I wouldn't bother again! Thanks for watching 🧵😊
Great video! Love the short sleeved t-shirt. Looks great on you.
Thank you so much! The short sleeve came out really well didn't it, I should have stopped there😂. Have a great week 🧵😊
I ❤ Joy Bernhardt!
She is brilliant isn't she, there is nothing that lady can't do!
Thank you so much for this video! I enjoyed watching your process and it inspired me to also do this. Your shirt looks amazing
Thank you so much for that lovely comment! I do hope you have success if you try this pattern. Thanks for watching 🧵😊
I haven't watched the video past the point where you were talking about doing a full bust adjustment, but that's where I struggle where you are right now.❤
same idea
Great shirt really like it
Thank you very much! 🧵😊
I can’t see anything wrong with it both look lovely.
Thank you so much Susan, that is really kind of you 🧵😊
It was so interesting to see the tissue fitting process. It definitely seemed like such a pain to do it on your own.
It was a massive pain!! I didn't feel I could ask my husband either 😂. I've had a go now anyway....I never need to do it again! Thanks for watching 🧵😊
Hello Carole
I think that you are on the right track
Joy bernhart has a lot of pattern fitting videos
One dedicated to palmer method
She also recently talked about the indie patterns fitting tips and why they don't fit by cup size that the indie patterns use
Explore a few videos
We as sewists want a better fit than ready made
Happy sewing
Take care 👗👚🪡🧵✂️👖
I’m wondering if a narrow shoulder adjustment or sloping shoulder adjustment might help
Thanks for that idea. I do a narrow shoulder occasionally on some other patterns so you maybe right. 😊🧵
Lovely video, Carole.
I get how hard it is to get a great fit on anything
I love both versions of your t-shirt.
Another video is from Tomkat Stitchery😊 on a knit FBA
Thanks! I have watched that one I think about a year ago and followed her instructions on a couple of T shirts. She has a fabulous channel. 🧵😊
Can you share what pattern is the shirt you are wearing in your intro? Thanks, always enjoy your videos.
Hi Pamela! Thanks for watching. I've just checked back the video and funnily enough the top I was wearing was the same pattern as the T shirt I wore on this weeks Friday Sews! Butterick 6859 which I have had a lot of success with. 🧵😊
The Perfect T Shirt from PamelasPatterns.
Thank you so much for that recommendation. I will have a look at that! 🧵😊
