Do not make this stupid mistake - Intel Core i9-13900K build with Asus ROG Strix Z790-A

  • I made a stupid mistake while building a new Intel 13th Gen PC. Or at least while trying to do so.
    Asus had kindly sent me the ROG STRIX Z790-A GAMING WIFI D4
    rog.asus.com/u...
    And Intel sent the Intel Core i9-13900K. So I was planning on stripping my machine down and rebuilding it with these new parts. Plus a few NVMe SSDs and 64GB of Kingston Fury Beast DDR5 ram. Then I hit a snag.

    This is a bit of a stupid oversight on my part. Not an issue for me (apart from extra expense) but it's worth keeping in mind that even the newest Z790 motherboards come with the option of DDR4 or DDR5 RAM compatibility. It is one or the other. You cannot use both. So take care when buying.
    There are still arguments for using DDR4. It's cheaper and there are less issues with XMP. In other words it's more stable but it can also have lower timings compared with DDR5. So if you're looking to save money by re-using DDR4 RAM from your current build then buying this sort of motherboard then that's a good plan. but for me it's just going to delay content 😭😭😭

    that comment you made near the end about the timings on ddr4 being much lower than on ddr5 means pretty much nothing, ddr5 has two channels per dimm and also has the power delivery built onto the ram itself whereas on ddr4 you can only get one channel per dimm and the power delivery is on the motherboard, and the bandwidth on ddr5 heavily outbalances the tighter timings on ddr4, especially when youre running xmp/docp on both as they are both going to be extremely loose (thanks to jedec subtimings, primaries dont matter much for performance).

    • @TransAmDan28
      @TransAmDan28 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also CAS is based on clock cycles. So 6000mhz ddr5 compared to 3000mhz ddr4, even if your CAS timing were double the figures on DDR5 it would have the same access time as DDR4.

    • @Comet-lv3nk
      @Comet-lv3nk ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TransAmDan28 yeah thing is cas, trcd(rd/wr), trp and tras do basically nothing for performance anyway, the subtimings do signifigantly more especially trrds/trrdl and tfaw, thats why theres no point in getting a, for example 3600 cl14 kit over a 3600 cl18 kit if your just gonna run xmp. if youre gonna oc then thats an entirely different story haha

      Because DDR5 is not relevant enough to warrant a complete redesign yet, neither is PCIe 4.0. Sure it's new but hardly exciting, the speeds are on level with DDR4 and upcoming higher end speeds are not fast enough over 4 to warrant upgrading to it. Ram jumps in 2 or even 3 stages is normal, if you're already sporting DDR4 then you won't be impressed till at least DDR6 maybe 7. It's just not that important unless you are crunching large amounts of data like the Seti project and such. Games no need for it yet.

And a person can game and crunch data with the same machine, or do rendering like in my case and would benefit of the newest technology (also because one can change the D5 dimms later on and get more performing blocks in a few years perhaps, as opposed to D4 that probably won't advance much in speed/latency in the coming years).

    Now you will run into the bigger issue, number of pcie lanes. Im almost certain if you populate all four m.2 drives, your video card is cut down from 16x to 8x. The 13900k only has twenty (20) pcie lanes. If you are running viedo at 16x, that only leaves 4 for your m.2. and each of those need 4. Here is a Stupid Mistake that I made with the ASUS TUF Gaming Plus WIFI D4 Z690 board and an i5-13600K. The problem that the Z690's BIOS don't work with the 13th Gen Intel processors out of the box. There is No Flash button on the motherboard so you can't update the board. I had to buy a new Pentium Processor that works with LGA 1700 so I can update the board. Fortunately, I found one for under $50. Just because they have the socket doesn't mean that the board and CPU are compatible out of the box.

      @@TheProvokedPrawn In my opinion, the negativity is so counter-intuitive. With negativity people are less likely to create educational videos again. Honestly, for the past 15 years I've worked in the computer build/repair field, and I've seen so many people caught out by assumptions like this.
      Recently I was caught out with a wireless mouse. The marketing all shows that it's got a USB-A charging wire but the mouse itself is type C. The wireless dongle was mentioned but not it's connector. I assumed it would be as the wire, and it would be a type A. It wasn't. It was a type C, and my computer doesn't have a type C port on it. I had to spend another £10 buying a type A to C adapter to get my wireless mouse wireless.

About 2 years ago I got a an !9 that takes that earlier DDR4 RAM, and as I am considering increasing my RAM quantity, I shall have to be careful in that respect. Who knows? I may have just gone ahead and got the wrong type, but the MB manual is quite easy to read concerning RAM type and quantity. Goes up to 128Gb of 32GB single DIMM capacity (4 sticks) in either ECC un-buffered DIMM or non-ECC units. Probably best for me to get the same type as is there now. I have two sticks giving me 32Gb, and so far that is plenty, but I could install another two if necessary without replacing the first two, and without running into compatibility problems, to give 64Gb. I suppose I could, instead of 2 sticks of 16Gb, add 2 of 32Gb, giving me 96Gb total.. I would need to take especial care regarding timing.

Sure it can help a bit but isn't make or break, go ahead and argue, you will just be confirming your own ignorance. DDR5 is neat but DDR4 will still work just fine and be more than enough for normal users and even high end users. Hype is really making PC's look and feel horrible with the amount of non certified folks jabbering in the comment sections about what THEY think you should be using. People needing speed in the most extreme circumstances will see some benefit but so called Gamer/Enthusiasts, little to none regardless of their claims, just in benchmark scores and the differences are slight. DDR4 to DDR5 jump is small as was 3 to 4, 1 to 3 was Big, 3 to 5 is pretty big. If you already are using 4 stick with it till at least DDR6 or 7, unless they change the numbering by then.

      Good job. If I was buying naturally I'd research but I didn't buy it and made assumptions so this was for others who might have done the same and not realised. Sharing is caring. Calling other people stupid for their errors is not. It's a wise man that learns from other people's mistakes

    AND WHAT do you have plugged in just above your floor fans, blocking 1.5 of them and starving your GPU? yike.

      That actually makes very little difference to GPU temps according to my tests

    You should also say that you need a BIOS update or Flash for Z690 combined with 13th gen motherboards

    DDR4 is perfect for me i bought 128GB DDR4 (4x32GB) a few weeks ago and my old bord cant handle so much Ram so i use this Board with an New CPU (DRR5 cost more than double than DDR4)

    That cpu can handle both ddr4 and ddr5 ram so maybe plug it and see worst case fails to post abd I only seen you unclip the top side
