I know nothing about technicalities of music..But as a music lover i think his sitar produces most sweet clear sounds and emotions ever.As a layman of music if i can realise that i wonder how how critics would rated him..Only a true devotee can render like this...Pronam..

One of the finest Sitarist as well as Musician in Classical Music forever in my point of view.He was just like a SAINT.Always I close my eyes and reach the Heaven to listen his music.Everyday I worship my Lord Pandit Nikhil Banerjee.But too much unfortunate to see him or his concert.
The High that he attained is but for the fact that He never hesitated to LEARN, even at ripe age: Smt. ANNAPURNA DEVI gave him "TALIM" whereof he grew to some superlative stature. This itself describes Him best!! His later renditions bears the truth!!!
Please notice two legendaries Tabla Masters in these recordings : Ustad KERAMATULLAH KHAN in Bhatyar & Pandit KISHEN MAHARAJ in Adana & Hem Bihag. Most probably Pandit Swapan Chowdhuri is in Sohini.
Sadly Mr. Banerjee's music lives lives today on recorded media and and in shards of melody on the sitars of those who spend their time denying even an indirect influence by him. His Sohini is not easily surpassed even my long gone masters. Hard to think that this raag, at the surface exuding gentle love, would also one played in time of war, acc. to the Shastras.
