    The thing, for me, about cybersecurity and why it's almost impossible to lose interest in this career path (as long as you love computers), is that human beings will ALWAYS love to learn. No matter what your mindset is, learning something new will always make you feel good. And cybersecurity is one of those careers where if you stop learning at any point, you start to lose your job security. You have to constantly keep up with new exploits etc., and what you do at work is always going to be a dynamic learning environment to some extent.
    I always knew my career would be something related to computers, and I simply chose cybersecurity because I hate programming and love using a terminal to do everything.

    I actually picked cyber as a major for all the “bad” reasons listed and not knowing what to do besides tech when I got out of high school…now here I am a junior in university with a summer internship and certification program lined up. The imposter syndrome is real because so many other students around me are extremely passionate about it, not nearly as much as me, but that’s ok because like you said in this video, it’s also about work ethic. Anyway all this to say don’t be too concerned about having the “right “ requirements or motivation to get in. If it’s meant for you, it’ll happen.

      Cyber sucks.
      The technical side can get traumatically complicated (especially pentest-type topics) and probably one of the toughest roads in IT. In my experience only C++ development is consistently harder.
      The entry level roles are boring as hell. It also attracts holier-than-thou weirdos and turbo nerds. Also those with diagnosed neurodivergence e.g. autism, Aspergers etc. Tend to gravitate towards cyber for some reason.
      The management side is drier than the Atacama at the height of summer. It attracts hand-wavey suit wearers who condescendingly talk common sense crap as if it's something new and we're all stupid.

    Great take man. I followed my passion for fitness in my early 20s, even did a bachelors degree in that topic and then figured out how unfulfilling the acutal job was. So it's not only that you "should" have passion in what you are doing, but it's also that following your passion sometimes leads to you losing it. I still love fitness, but it was an eye opened for me personally, because being in my early 20s i also followed the good old "Do what you love and money will follow" advice, which is absolute bulls**t. I then went from Business Analyst to Software Developer and what made me successfull in what i do is exactly what you mentioned here, which is talent. I made solid money in what i was good at, not what i was necessarily passionate about. You don't HAVE TO love what you do, you should just enjoy the general daily work, whatever aspect of it is for you personally, but that's a mindset i sticked to and went pretty well with it.

So we concluded "follow your passion" is the thing. Now everybody knows and aims to follow the passion but gets nowhere, and we see those _few_ who follow work ethics & dedication & consistency thing do well. So now we conclude the opposite. And probably 20 years later we'll say it's passion of course :)

Just sitting there knowing you are able to do this and that is what keeps me staring dead ahead down that path. Like always though, interests do fade due to the human brain wanting to learn more. Thankfully with cybersecurity there is always something new to learn because there is always a way for malicious hackers to find their way around things.

    • @javonbaker1589
      @javonbaker1589 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn’t the point to make a living though. I’m sure there are many folks doing work they’d rather not for a solid salary.
      Respectfully speaking, I doubt a company intends to hire an employee based on the idea that they (employer) are in someway acting with the best interest of the new hire in mind. The employee has a valued set of skills that can be used to further business goals / objectives. They will be compensated accordingly. I’ve always disliked the idea that employees have to show up with more than the preferred skillset and a good disposition.

      @@javonbaker1589 Yes, but you can't let the employer know that if you want to jump to the top of their list. If they ask, "why do you want this job", you don't answer "because it's a job doing work I don't like that pays a lot of money". Unless you've got personal magnetism, an answer like that is a surefire way to get your resume in their trash can.

    The biggest lie, and worst advise that boomers ever gave was 'follow your heart and the money will follow'. Absolute dogshit advice.
    "Follow the money, and the money will follow. Then use your excessive wealth to fund your passion as a hobby, and maybe once you master that passion you can turn it into your full time job."
    I like to ride my bicycle/motorcycle, work in my woodshop, and cook. No one pays me to do those things. I'm paid to work on networks. It is probably the highest paying thing that i'm intellectually capable of - and i'm fairly good at it. I'm paid quite well (more than the median combined income in my state), and it allows me to fund those hobbies. Unlikely anyone will pay me to ride my bicycle or cook, but maybe one day i'll be able to sell furniture or something as a 'side hustle'.

      You also forgot that those boomers bought their mansions for pennies and retired when they were 15. "Grandpa" probably reached the peak of his career tightening wheel nuts at the Ford factory, but still enjoyed a more prosperous life than his grandson who trained as a veterinarian.

      I was one of those. Leaving the tech industry entirely now - there's not really much that interests me and I don't have the passion or inclination to keep learning. Every job has the entire population of the planet applying, most of these jobs are variations of the exact same with a few of the words moved around, and the competition is brutal.
      Not everybody wants to be "challenged every day" or "never stop learning" or "no two days are the same". Some people just want to put their hours in and go home to enjoy their hobbies... and that's totally fine. We should respect that.
      It's just work. It's not real and much of it quite frankly is of no consequence - even if a doctor fixes you up, you'll still die eventually. Find yourself a job that isn't unbearable and keeps you solvent in the lifestyle you enjoy.

  • @freashty
    @freashty ปีที่แล้ว

    Mate I respect the humility but I still think you should probably not be giving career advice because you're changing the words and repeating the initial mistake
    For anyone reading this who's struggling to follow advice from TH-camrs, remember that most of these people do not have significant qualifications to be coaching you and they have no idea what your personal situation is like
    What the answer looks like for you will likely be totally different from what works for them, and what works for you now is likely to be totally different from what works for you in the future. If you are going to take advice from someone, take it from someone with proper qualifications who actually knows what you're like - sometimes this person has to be you

      @@halfbakedproductions7887 True. I see jobs and promotions rolled out on the red carpet for underexperienced diverse candidates. While I have spent over 20 years dedicated to the field. They should have to put their work in too. I'm leaving as well.

      All due respect, what is there in cybersecurity to be truly passionate about? Managing a digital panopticon, while big league hackers get hired by the 3 letter agencies after a bust and get a free ride after helping out the feds? Getting replaced by h1b visas? Are event logs that exciting? Just say you want to feel needed and you want the big paycheck, no?
