You could use the BLDC motor as a generator, for regen but the traction motor should be an AC,3 phase motor, with its appropriate speed controller. It will have to a be mid-drive setup, connected to the wheel via a chain, but it will definitely give better range. Also, the battery should be bigger and 60VDC instead of 48V.
