I sang in a production of Queen of Spades with her when I was starting out in opera. There was still a lot of voice there even though she was over 80 years old at the time.
Frida Leider ,Lotte Lehman and Modl were my introduction to Wagner singing.For a combination of voice and text driven performances most modern singers leave a lot to be desired. A few exceptions like Nilsson along with some nameless flashes in the pans.Thank goodness for the Bayreuth recordings. In Particular Modl.Ian
How do I know it’s from the 1953 Bayreuth _Götterdämmerung_ conducted by Joseph Keilberth? The noise at 14:01-14:03 😩 Still not sure if it’s from the orchestra or the stage 😨
Modl's 2 performances from 1953 Keilberth and Furtwangler,, Not sure which I slightly prefer, as great as is Keilberth's Bayreuth, I might have to give the nod to the magical genius of Furtwangler and his sensitive ROI, Not sure why but all my radio orchestra's recordings show the superior performance. Furtwangler breathes life into the composition, the tempos flow w magic and superior percusion. Keilberth 53 has the slightly superior cast. Keilberth/52 Keilberth 53, Furtwangler 53, my fav complete Rings
BN- A lot of Bruennhildes come from the mezzo Fach. MM- Yes, of course. And they manage it. Look at me. I started as a mezzo. In my good period I sang every high C that was written, but it wasn't a high C like yours. BN- It was a high C from Martha Moedl, and that was quite enough!
