- Bilingualism makes you more cultural aware and able to communicate easier with other cultures, foreigners. Gaston has a fantastic way in explaining this to you.
As a journalist and writer Gaston has a lot of linguistic experience. But in terms of experience, he says, there’s nothing like staying abroad. In Peru and Ecuador, speaking Spanish was the best and often the only way to communicate with people who lived completely different lives. “By learning another language, you make your world bigger, more diverse and less scary.” More about the delights and surprising effects of bilingualism in his talk.
The evolution of languages is an ongoing process, and huge changes can be expected in decades to come. “Young people want to distinguish themselves from the generation before them, and changing the language is a great way to do that, especially as it annoys older people no end.” Among adults, women tend to be leading in language change. So when it comes to language, adult men are mostly followers? “Yes, we are. And often grumpy ones at that.”

At fifty-one I decided that I didn't want to die a monoglot, and I chose to learn Spanish, as it's a fast-growing language.
It's been a lot of work, but 2 3/4 years later of studying online only I could get by well in a Spanish-speaking country, though understanding native speakers is still a challenge for me.

I really liked the way he described learning another language.
No matter what words I use, they won't be enough to describe how awesome this talk is. It is thought provoking, mind blowing, descriptive, full of examples and interesting comparisons. I am a native Serb and I aspire to be trilingual (if that term exists:)). I speak Serbian, English and French.
Definatelly it's the best TED talking I've ever seen. He 's a great speaker and also he talks with his soul and deep feelings about the issue. It really is a thought provoking! Congratulations !

Even though English is spoke by many people around the world, being belingual is still a huge thing for us french people (contrary to north Europe country citizens). School teach grammar basics but it is our responsability to learn English by ourselves in order to fully understood the language. This kind of presentation is a strong motivating factor to keep on! As long as I will be fluent in English, I definitely want to learn Italian and a language from an other continent
I'm from Brazil and i'm trying to learn french. I think that language is so beatiful and charmous. But it's so hard, but i will not give up.

good luck with Italian it has literally so much grammar for no reason at all, some that we don't even use!

Learning another language to become a bilingual, or a trilingual, speaker is one of the best time investments you can make in your life.

It is never too late to learn another language. That's true in a way, but nevertheless learning another language is extremely time-consuming, and many people don't have that much time. I would recommend to people who are native English speakers to learn another language, but to choose one that is easier to learn than national languages, that is to learn Esperanto. It will give you all the benefits in a shorter time. You can study Esperanto free of charge on the very good website Duolingo. Already well over half a million people are doing just that.
You can learn an actual language with an actual culture and an actual people instead, like Norwegian, in similar amounts of time.
Esperanto has culture and people...in similar amounts of time? I don't believe that, the international language is a constructed language and it is easy to learn. Not like national languages.
honestly if youe consistent in your studies everyday, even if its for 30 minutes a day you can learn something.
Honestly, you don't need that much time if you keep your frequencies on check. @kuroichan101 is totally right in saying 30 minutes a day is enough for language learning. Whoever says they don't have 30 minutes a day is just clearly making up excuses.
Finding speakers of Esperanto is pretty hard. So "all" the benefits in a shorter time I wouldn't say is necessarily true.
