  • In this video we try making a settlement the way that WotC intended! Using the rules found in the DMG on page 112.
    We also end up using some random generators, you can find them here:

    The notable traits are meant for the settlement as a whole, not the leader. So its the settlement in general that has a sinister reputation, the leader could be a saint for all we know and as just as possible, but if the town is say constantly plagued by famines or has a lot of criminals, no matter how just the leader is, the place's reputation is still sinister.

    The town's burgomeister is a vampire, and the orphanage next to the warehouse is his food supply. The town has a sinister reputation over how often people go missing.
    Actually I like this town.

    Myth Weavers seems to be based on 3.5e, which sounds right up my alley.

    • @samanham7394
      @samanham7394  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is! The first edition I (Ham) played was 3.5e, so that's why I wanted to check it out. It's definitely fine for 3.5, but I was a bit disappointed that it didn't have an option for 5e.

      @WandererEris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@samanham7394 I tried 5e but wasn't impressed at how much it stripped out so I went straight back to 3.5e after a few sessions. There's some good stuff in there and I still buy the occasional book to use as homebrew fodder, but it's definitely not the system for me.

    For a preplanned story campaign your point about already knowing the town and what it does stands. In a west marches or hex crawling game where the players can accidentally stumble onto a settlement this video is worth it's weight in gold.

      Very true. We haven't really had much experience with that type of game, but I can definitely see it being a life saver.

    The respected leader could be trying to clean up the sinister town.
    The town is supposed to be sinister, not the leader.

    Same advice for the dungeon - have a couple settlements written out and stuffed in the back of your DM binder in case you need a settlement on the fly.

    The religious town could have been facing a plague and continued to try and faith it away until another group came in to conquer them. The orphanage was made after being conquered to house all the new orphans due to the plague, the crowed tenet space is just a quarantine zone, and the tavern could be less members only and more the only ones who go are the conquerors because the towns people don't like taverns for whatever reasons. The conqueror seems fair and just because he came in to save the town and try to keep the plague from spreading further and has a sinister reputation because the knowledge of the plague has not spread beyind its borders as no one can leave because of the risk of spread, which also applies to anyone going to check out what's going on in the town. So the outside perspective is that all of a sudden a group just went and took over a town and now anyone who goes there is never seen again.

      See, stuff like this is why the generators are actually pretty cool. It can really set up the skeleton of a pretty good idea.

    I like how, 5 minutes into the video, when you're making your first building, we still know absolutely NOTHING about this town that would be immediately obvious to a player character approaching it, entering it, and walking through it. The things they have you roll MIGHT be something that the PCs have heard in rumors, but more than likely, this will be stuff they discover later. But not one thing you rolled in those first five minutes, beyond the warehouse, would tell the PCs what they see, hear, or smell.
    Do they see a big city? A small village? WHAT?!

    • @samanham7394
      @samanham7394  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a very good point. We need more tables!!!

  • @snblitz5791
    @snblitz5791 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bro the first three gave me a great idea that the leader is part of the majority, conquering the town and claiming it as his own. To most who come in his city/village he is a kind and just man, but has a sinister reputation of how the minority is really treated, with rumors amongst the enemy factions that he secretly heads or benefactors the slave trade in his city for said minorities.

    2:33 you were on to something, there. They may have conquered an area, maybe it was because they were being beseiged elsewhere and needed the resources and were backed in a corner, or the place they conquered had first went after them, or were people with demonic gods (with the religious aspect).
    But yeah. While conquering, they could still be fair and just.

    You can be respected as a fair and just leader, even if you are sinister. These are a bunch of conquering peoples that have found their new lands thanks to the cunning and deceit of their leader. It's fair and just if your values tend to lean towards "buyer beware" or "might makes right".

  • @azmendozafamily
    @azmendozafamily 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The town could have a reputation of being a pious town, which made it so much easier for a sinister warboss to come in and take over. The original inhabitants were pious, peaceful fools, I mean folks who were conquered by more tyrannical people. The new Majority respects their leader, even if the conquered quiet resent him. Maybe the existing celery has told the conquered to accept the fate they've been handed because troubled times will bring about the raising os their savior and bring peace again to their land.
    Also, the town could be a pilgrimage point and the piety is emblematic that they were monks. Who knows, I'm adding my interpretations as you roll along.

      Bulk body parts warehouse. Maybe they were conquered by a high priestess who has a reputation for zealotry, but who is fair and just.

    BORING?? After rolling Plague or famine, there's a warehouse, maybe that warehouse is the last place where they have the harvest from last season and the people are putting up a resistance by sneaking in and stealing what they can to make a porridge or simple bread to feed the people in the town. The incited revolt may be against the pious clergy/leaders and, not so much against the conquerors.
