    I'm from Indiana and this is great to see! I haven't been to Santa Clause, Indiana in a long time but I love it there. I should go vlogging more often around my hometown. Come visit my hometown of Greenfield! We have the James Whitcomb Riley house right along our main street of SR 40!

    Went to Santa Claus Land here once. This place was horrific for me as a child. They had baby chickens in bubble gum machine like prisons in the hot sun where you needed to deposit a nickel and a small amount of ground corn would be dispensed requiring the animal to do a "trick" to get any. I'm 55 and it still haunts me.

    Holiday World has some great rides! Also there are multiple theme parks in the USA still operating today that opened in the 1800’s. Lake Compounce and Cedar Point are two off the top of my head that are much older.

    • @dannymartin1114
      @dannymartin1114 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      norweeg I think what they mean is those are just amusement parks, no theme, where as santas land is the oldest amusement park with a defined theme, hence themepark.

    • @Norweeg
      @Norweeg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Danny Martin That’s one way to look at it. You have a point there. Although the rides at Holiday World are pretty great, we stopped going because of the type of people that park started to attract as regular visitors. The last few visits I had to Holiday World, it was filled with some of the loudest, trashiest people I’ve ever been surrounded by. It wasn’t just a few bad eggs either. It really is a shame, but when I want to have a nice fun family day, I don’t want my little ones to be around people screaming at each other, unwatched kids pushing past my family, others cussing loudly, and people leaving literal trash from where they’ve been.

    • @urbex_coasters
      @urbex_coasters 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "theme parks" and "amusement parks" are different. Amusement parks plop down rides and call it a day, theme parks focus on the theming. One thing that's generally an easy tell is if you can't name park sections, you're looking at an amusement park, not a theme park (ie Lake Compounce). When you can name park sections, if it doesn't feel like things are strategically placed and it's just a brand slapped on a ride, it's an amusement park, not a theme park (ie Six Flags parks). In the case of Cedar Point, because of Frontiertown I'd say it qualifies as a theme park but its age as a theme park would be determined by when Frontiertown opened (around the 1960s). Holiday World is the oldest operating theme park when you look at how the industry differenciates.

    Wrong on the history of the name sir. Back in 1856, the town was called Santa Fe. They want a post office but was told the post office that there was already a Santa Fe, IN with a post office and that they would have to change their town's name. While the town was having a meeting on Christmas Eve, to rename the town it was interrupted when a door blew open and sleigh bells could be heard on the wind. "It's Santa Claus!" cried a child, and hence how Santa Claus, IN came to be.

  • @SueGirling68

    Awww how cool that they have all of the different places there all dedicated to Santa Claus, the little children must love visiting. x

  • @RhettyforHistory
    @RhettyforHistory 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    This town is awesome and I'm glad you were finally able to make it there. Yes Santa's Land was the first theme park. I think there is a lot of people that don't realize that. That post office has been in a few locations. It used to sit in the theme park. The Santa Statue was that was near there was always there and never in Santa Land. It was done by someone who scammed the town actually. They made it out of cement and it was supposed to be made of marble. So the statue started crumbling. They have redone it in recent years. The church was at a different location and they moved it there as well. They plan on moving more there as well. In fact behind the museum you will see an old clock and it used to sit on top of the building where you said there was a colored replica. The town really got behind the whole theme and and they started creating other things in the town besides the theme park. That's what the Santa's Candy Castle is. And right by there the old abandoned looking structure had a bunch of different things. It was a toy workshop sort of thing and it had games as well. It wasn't part of Santa's Land. There is a lot of Santa themed things in the town. The shops are great. The lodge has Christmas throughout and every room is different. Christmas time is really cool. I could go on forever about that place. As far as Lincoln. The park that is just outside of town is where Lincoln's Boyhood home was. As you have said before, there are three states that lay claim to Lincoln. Indiana is one and that was a big part of it there. The park has part of a little history from every significant place Lincoln ever went. So the corner stones from the white house, rocks from Gettysburg etc. Each location you hike to has something else. Also his mother has a memorial there. There is a lot to see in the area and well worth the visit. The theme park is a low price but it gets you in the amusement side and the water park side. Some of the top coasters in the country. Cheap food and all you candy drink all day long for free. And we are talking any soda, Gatorade etc.

    If you are heading north and pass by Mitchell you should check out Spring Mill State Park. There is a Virgil Grissom museum with some of his actual gear and the village. Lawrence County has 3 Astronauts from here Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom was born and raised in Mitchell. Charles "Charlie" Walker was born and raised in Oolitic. Kenneth "Kenny" Bowersox was born in Virginia but was raised in Bedford. Bedford is the Limestone Capital of the world.
