This game came out when I was 5 yrs old and I remember after I was put to bed, peaking through the accordion door I had for my bedroom and watching my dad play the game. Even then I was fascinated by the incredible atmospheric music and scenery and also scared the hell out of me at some parts esp when brink gets his hand cut off. This game was a staple for me for my interests in the sci-fi genre to this day at 29 years of age.
The Dig also has had a HUGE influence on my creativity and imagination. It is actually one of the biggest sources of inspiration for a sci fi adventure series im developing. There is NO OTHER GAME that does ATMOSPHERE the way The Dig does it. It’s pure magic. It’s perfectly sublime. And ENTIRELY UNIQUE to this game. I have no idea how that creative team made this enchanting, mesmerizing elixir of perfect sci fi magic, but I hope they realize its monumental impact it has had on some of us. Yes. It is every bit as important to me as Star Trek and Star Wars are to me.
Voice acting was so good man. Robert Patrick made Boston feel like such a kind hearted, kind of simple but still stern sort of "fellow" that I feel he's impossible to dislike. Watching/listening to this made him grow on me a lot for some reason. Great stuff. Hard to believe it's the same guy chasing down to kill a young John Connor in T2.
I remember at a point playing when I was in my young teenage years that I discovered a alternate ending, I love playing this game, even purchased it on the website Steam even though I have the original disk, I even purchased the soundtrack because I loved the music, this game was so much fun to play
this definitely goes down as one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played. the puzzles could keep you going for days and then you'd finally figure them out and it was so damn rewarding. the music, the setting, the characters..should have been a movie :D
I still remember this game nearly 20 years after playing it - particularly the soundtrack. Michael Land really went above & beyond. The geometric shapes on the control panels always reminded me of jello.
the 90's were a golden age for adventure games. these games were deep, clever and fascinating as well as funny. you actually had to use your brain to solve puzzles and move forward! I remember being really frustrated as a kid when the 2000's came along with the more 3d graphic driven action and strategy games (and eventually made point and click games kind of obsolete) which made me lost interest in gaming completely after a while. i am in my 30s now and i still go back to these games every now and then. the 90's stuff is simply incomparable with the rubbish of today's gaming.
I bought it at a flea market 1996-1997 . Was one of the best experiences in my gaming history! And I am glad that there is no movie till now. I am sure a movie would not be able to transport such feelings like this game does...
Memorable moments 24:30 Transit 41:00 The Fall 59:00 Resurrection 1:48:50 Looking for my Lobster 2:07:25 I saw Brink 2:19:00 The Inventor 2:31:00 Crystal Madness 2:42:30 Maggie opens the Eye 2:48:30 Spacetime Six Wow, Stephen Spielberg and Orson Scott Card, no wonder this was good. In "The Dig" I see ties to Armageddon and Titan AE, The Expanse, Contact, Halo, and even 127 Hours. Also "pulchritudinous" 😂
This is probably a controversial opinion here, but The Dig should never get an HD remaster. It should get a full on 4k remake from the ground up that takes full advantage of the most modern gaming hardware, and takes our advances in understanding interstellar travel and higher dimensions into consideration. I'd love to see the game remade using full motion capture and maybe even an over the shoulder perspective. Maybe a couple tweaks to the story like adding Ken and Cora to the mix on Cocytus. An HD remaster would be cool, but this story still has so much that could be expanded on.
If you resurrect Maggie, she commits suicide by jumping off of a cliff. At the end, she frowns, instead of smiles, at Boston, then slapping him (instead of hugging him), before giving him a tongue lashing for breaking his promise.
@@frogisis I think the difference is that Brink used them regularly, as a drug; if you revive Maggie, she’s only had it used on her the one time. Just a guess!
Yeah I'm sure it got a lot worse a lot faster for Brink. It would also make sense, then, that the griffin people didn't notice the problem right away instead of the Inventor trying it out the first time and being like "Hmmm, that's not right... Oh well, back to the drawing stone..." By then their use was already widespread and they didn't notice the problem until it was too late, making them focus on building the Eye. You'd think after enough times the Inventor would be like "Wait! Before you go... Do you... happen to... you know... have any more of... Just one! I only want one! ...Ahhhhhhhh, that's hitting just right... OK, no, actually, I believe you can do it, can do the Spacetime Six thing you guys are so great just so great so beautiful hey when everyone gets back let's start a restaurant together wouldn't that be cool? OK, OK, you gotta go? OK, cool, that's cool, we'll talk later though for sure right? Bring some crystals, too, don't forget the crystals OK though bye see you later, with the crystals..." Or more seriously, I think it would have been a nice addition for him to just say like "Why even now it's taking all my willpower not to forcibly take the life crystals you carry!" I'd also be interested to know the timeline of the Eye disaster, though-Like how does the Inventor know all this stuff, and hide a part and place a guard dog, if he was buried before everyone went in there? Did another alien visitor revive him before ages ago and then a ghost told him, and then he walked out and did that stuff before going back to his tomb, or what? Not that it really matters or counts as a plot hole as far as I'm concerned, I just want to deepen my understanding of the world of an old game I love.
This is one Game that has to be made into a movie. Seeing it was written by Steven Spielburg it is begging to be made. And just found out Orson Scott Card wrote the dialog for this game. Start a petition to get this made into a movie. The story was written as if it was going to be a movie. So the screen play is almost complete, and the scripiting.
@Techy Nomad not correct, Alan Dean Foster wrote the novelization of the game while it was developed, as he did for some Star Wars, Star Trek and other sci-fi movies. Spielberg, Brian Moriarty and Orson Scott Card are credited as writers for The Dig.
I had started to watch my way though it months ago, but now that I got to see the end, it's wonderful! A little clunky in places by today's standards, but a first-rate RPG for 25 years ago. I wish I'd played it when it was new. Oh, well. This was almost as much fun. Thanks, pilgrim! (Everybody remember to say that like John Wayne.)
Having watched the whole playthrough as a remember session, I can draw the same two conclusions I did when I played this first time: 1) This game was hell hard to figure out without hints. 2) Maggie Robbins is the stupidest woman on our galaxy and Spacetime Six.
I love this game. it was dramatic and exciting with the wonder of what was going to happen next. Lucas Arts was the shit back then. I have all of their games but can not play them cause there is no more DOS.
I wish the remaster or a newer version had the same graphics but somehow add more gameplay to be able to have the other member at the beginning join you
ScummVm has bugs when swithching music between scenes. You can notice that on 2:29:19 - you have the Eye portal humming sound and the sound of the cutscene simultaneously. DosBox handles that as in original. So concerning the job - it's great - concerning your experience - suggest you to try DosBox - to embrace The Dig in its original glory :)
He meant the control panel for the power core bot. He (the player) probably just memorized the sequence, but once you mess with it you realize they're just directional arrows - upper button means go up, right button means go right etc and from there you just sort of pilot the little drone to the right spot
Would be more “movie like” without subtitles, I feel. Maybe it’s just my age, but I find subtitles horribly distracting unless I’m watching a foreign language movie.
It's the vaseline lobby again. Run for your lives or your screen will be smeared too!! But seriously, no idea what they were thinking degrading the original pixel work like this
Fortunately, although the Steam version has filtering and aspect ratio scaling turned on by default, both can be turned off separately if switched to Windowed mode (Alt-Enter toggles that I think) and right click on the title bar to change ScummVM's options. Then you can switch back to fullscreen with Alt-Enter again.
Nice work. Enjoyable watch. Isn't it possible to turn off the subtitles right at the start of the game? I think that would make for a better movie like experience.
aw hell no! wait, how did you know what colours to use on that control panel on 46:17 and 46:51? I've been stuck in that part forever and it doesn't seem to make any sense! there are literally thousands of possible combinations!
Ah, yes, trial and error. The mainstay of so many puzzles in games. You just had to experiment until you figured out which buttons directed where, then keep adding commands until you managed to setup the correct combination. The damn thing was so slow to move it took me at least an hour.
How do you know what combo on the buttons to fix the lens. There is no clue in the walk through and I have to result to watching this walk through to learn the combo. What is missing?
I know you asked 4 years ago, and I wondered the same thing. This is the best I could find: steamcommunity.com/app/6040/discussions/0/1696048786954155266/
Haha, if you look very carefully the alien panel is basically just a Numpad on your keyboard. I was able to figure out the arrow system pretty quick once I realized that, oh, some 20 years ago. I suspect Commander Low realized the same thing, even if he did not state how he learned it.

This. Every time I solved a puzzle I always found myself craving either lime or cherry jello!
There's always room for alien technology shaped like jello!
Same!

One of my favorite old games. The dig.. and full throttle. Great to see them again. Thks 👍

One of Lucas's most fascinating games!
Great music and atmosphere.
still my favorite game to this day. would like to see a longplay where you can the feel the frustration of trying to figure it out.
Then this would probably be a days long video
Check out Day9's Mostly Walking series!
magnusm4 months long!
This game should be preserved and maybe remastered. Mesmerizing
If you resurrect Maggie, she commits suicide by jumping off of a cliff. At the end, she frowns, instead of smiles, at Boston, then slapping him (instead of hugging him), before giving him a tongue lashing for breaking his promise.
It's good to know there's a choice or two in this game.
It's ironic that neither she nor the inventor seem to actually show any of the ill effects from the crystals they keep talking about.
@@frogisis I think the difference is that Brink used them regularly, as a drug; if you revive Maggie, she’s only had it used on her the one time.

полностью поддерживаю.
Nobody can do that into a good movie today. It will be a shit like Avatar and so on.
Sandman why can’t you be happy with the awesome adventure game that it was. Just pretend you’re playing the movie

Monkey Island, DIG, The day of the tentacle, Full Trotle, Indiana Jones...
Full Throttle was relaunched a while ago... I'd love to have The Dig again in my game list to play.
Having watched the whole playthrough as a remember session, I can draw the same two conclusions I did when I played this first time:
1) This game was hell hard to figure out without hints.
2) Maggie Robbins is the stupidest woman on our galaxy and Spacetime Six.

DOSBox my friend. I've been able to play Full Throttle.
+Jonathan Golden what is DOSbox and how do you get it?
+Jonathan Golden thanks a lot. I hope they work with that. I love these games.
El Bandito you can get them on steam for cheap
Thanks but I want something so I can utilize my CD games.
One of the greatest games of all time
Just finished the audiobook. And there's a movie?? Woah.
I remember when we were downloading the games from Cornerstone BBS locally anyway. I remember this game it was great!
The effect the crystals have on Brink is very similar to the way nur-ab-sal influenced Sophia in Fate of Atlantis.
I wish the remaster or a newer version had the same graphics but somehow add more gameplay to be able to have the other member at the beginning join you
The intro remake is ready :) visit my channel 2 check it out.
Si ! Vean la remake the Dig en el canal rickonami que es INCREIBLE por favor!
Why is the Video filtered? 😔
So many good memories playing these Lucas arts gems!
thanks alot , i wished to see or play the game since 1995 , thanks alot
That has to be the slowest moving "earth threatening" asteroid ever. Lol as slow as it is they should be able to just tow it away with the shuttle.
Because it wasn't an asteroid. I thought this would be obvious to a 5 year old even.
awesome game it was and it is
And it shall be
I always wondered why Brink was old when he was brought back from the dead at the end but maggie wasn't.
Daniel Jungers Brink used so many crystals on himself. Maggie didn't unless you used them on her.
It was stated in the audiobook that he used 12 years of his life to learn stuff while dead. A small price to say he said.
I love this game and this story
Arnar Valur yeah
holy shit ! 10:16 ! They already had smart phones :D
Sometimes science-fiction becomes reality very fast.

pure nostalgia made of of 100% win
Man, I loved this game.
how many HDs is this?
there's something alive in this dead space.
how did you cahnge the resulotion? i have the game on steam
I still have the book by Alan Dean Foster.
1:49:50 i love how he just keep on walking normally. LOL
The hole concept reminds me of Rama from Arthur C Clark. If you havent read it you should.
Damn this soundtrack reminds me a lot of halo ce
cool old game the dig , full throttle , old kirk startrek games and some other
The best, ever.....

Is that Robert Patrick's voice?
yes
I want a remake..
This is one game remaster I wouldn't mind ...
Buy with a stream application Lucas-arts adventures pack on for Mac OS X
The voice actor of Brink sounds like Edwin in Baldur's Gate
An amazing game
HOW did you know what colors to use on that control panel in time: 46:20?
they are on the crystal rods, you look at them with the magnifying glass
He meant the control panel for the power core bot. He (the player) probably just memorized the sequence, but once you mess with it you realize they're just directional arrows - upper button means go up, right button means go right etc and from there you just sort of pilot the little drone to the right spot
Does this HD movie-like version actually released? Can I play this game in this remake version somehow?
Katsoulinos it’s on steam
This game was created by Picard’s little cousin, Mr. Rod Steward.
They should make a film out of this
Fun fact - it was originally proposed as one!
Terestrasz This would be a blockbuster SF film if they made a movie of this today!
People will never learn ! Movies out of video games (even the best ones) are always SHITTY AS FUCK !
that has to be the better sci-fi games like it
this is based on a book that is good. the dialog in this game has been dumbed down so much my head hurts.
49:07 they knew about smartphones before they even came out O.o
caramba que jogo foda! Adorei a historia.

It was proposed as a movie.
There seem to be tons of inconsistencies between the spoken words and the captions.
Thanks for your effort. Great, great an epic.
Why did you destroy the beautiful pixel-art by this ugly smoothing?
It's the vaseline lobby again. Run for your lives or your screen will be smeared too!!

For all he knows that was the last of its specie and it's now extinct
The filter you are using is awful. Original graphics look much better. Try playing without scaling or filters.
How do you know what combo on the buttons to fix the lens. There is no clue in the walk through and I have to result to watching this walk through to learn the combo. What is missing?
Should've shown what happens if you pour a life crystal on Maggie 👍
Bis ich endlich rausgefunden hatte, wie die Maschine funktioniert, um die Linse zu bekommen.

What is the meaning of each demonstration on the museum (at approximately 55:00)?
I know you asked 4 years ago, and I wondered the same thing. This is the best I could find: steamcommunity.com/app/6040/discussions/0/1696048786954155266/
is this the remastered version?
I just can't find out how to use the flashlight like @1:24:21 Anyone can help please ?
лайк не глядя игра детства ))
THX!
"Light" summer clothing.
DE-"lighted".
realy HD??? (greetings from the destroyed Germany)
46:18 How did you know the right combination? There hadn't been any hints up to that point.
Ilsimeone probably memorized it, not a first time player
Wow.. It is so cinematic..But How does Low know how to use alien panel? I don't see any clues on that.(47:00)
John Doe Maggie?
Haha, if you look very carefully the alien panel is basically just a Numpad on your keyboard. I was able to figure out the arrow system pretty quick once I realized that, oh, some 20 years ago. I suspect Commander Low realized the same thing, even if he did not state how he learned it.
Brink is a goa'uld
Thanks, btw i didnt get the bracelet before i went down, am i fucked? Im at the part with the rat now
Por fin encontre hace 19 años no pude pasar esto xD
Big game
"HD movie" 🤣
Yea i don't get it either but still good walkthrough due to lack of constantly talking like some do
Ending was kind of lame but I guess it was about the journey
Just beat the game, very mediocre, also the bitch slapped me at the end.
