How To Aim with Turkish Traditional Bow

- I have frequently been asked how to aim with Turkish traditional bow when shooting with thumb release. Although I have always been an intuitive/instinctive shooter I have been experimenting with some conscious aiming methods for the last few years. Here you will find possible conscious aiming methods when the string is pulled to the earlobe as mentioned in all Ottoman and many Mamluk treatises. However, there is also a method that is used with lower anchors that also existed and used in the past.

I always liked archery, but since I've seen the turkish way of archery, I found out this is the archery I would love to learn. Love every way, I've seen how the bows are made and the technique employed. This is an awesome tradition. Wish I could learn after this disease is over

Great instruction, I have a 50lb Turkish bow, and been learning thumb draw, living in England, this might sound strange, but, for short range, intuitive, rapid shooting, I am enjoying this style of archery.

By the way when people shoot guns in a high stress situation (self defence, close quarter combat) we actually shoot instinctively despite technically using sights. There is no time for conscious aiming - situation similar to horse archery! That's why people carrying guns and law enforcement spend hours on drills. Or at least should do it x)
Exactly! In close-quarter pistol shooting for example, sights are used just to "point" rather than "aim", if ever used.
Thank you so much, I use a wooden recurve shot off a shelf using gap aiming, I can get pretty good results.
I love the look of Turkish style bows and have wanted to learn that way of shooting, but it’s so different to the way I shoot it’s been hard to know how to start. This video has given me several ways to try and a starting point to work from.

Tbh it depends on your goal of shooting, to a new archer having a point of aim like the tip of an arrow helps alot especially in younger people, so they can learn proper technique and not hurt themself and after learning and being able to hit the target it can become instinctive after tons of practice its basically repetition. Also if one is looking to shoot only to hit gold aiming can prove superior due to how long it takes to learn instinctive.

I like the bare bow, compact Turkish style of archery.... As a right-handed archer, have always nocked the arrow on the left side of the bow, but for rapid-fire shooting, nocking the arrow on the right side of the bow makes sense....just might take a bit of getting used to....
This is the best explanation of various aiming techniques in such a relatively short time format, that I have found.
I have a great admiration and respect for your channel, as it combines my great love for traditional archery of any kind with historical and scientific approach (I shot Olympic style as a kid).

Its very interesting to see convergence in techniques. What you say basically matches word by word my own findings when I self-trained in trad. archery: instinctive for up to 30 meters and use of reference points with deliberate aiming process beyond 30 m. Why the "30 meters"? I guess, this distance (or similar) is natural limit for human "tools" for instinctive aiming. Great video and explanation, Murat!

Prefering lower anchors isn't as much about accuracy but more about optimal body mechanics as it puts less stress on shoulder joint and doesn't require as much strength of the shoulder capsule muscles. Great video nonetheless, great info!
Thanks! Lower anchor also provides better visibility when shootimng at a close target from horse back. If you anchor high targets at a certain distance may disappear behind the bow.

Hi Murat, thanks for the video. Very interesting. I am still trying to get to apprentice level with the thumb ring haha It has been a long road so far. One part of my technique that I struggle with is where to anchor. When you say draw to the earlobe which part of your drawing hand touches your earlobe? I am left handed and have been 'aiming' down the line of the arrow eg. left hand side of the bow.
Touching yr earlobe with the thumbring is quite a good and repeatable anchor

I read that there is correlation between Persian and Ottoman Archery. Like the grip cheng-i baz similar to Persian name: changal-i baz. Thank you for passing on your knowledge. The Turkish style bow is my absolute favourite
Turkish and Persian cultures have been interacting since 7th century and Iranian plateau has been ruled by Turkish military elite since 9th century. There have been mutual interaction between these two cultures for more than a thousand years.

Excellent skills ; your bow is interesting it doesn’t follow the usual Turkish bow form .
It is a Crimean Tatar bow The classification of Turkish bows is blurry and inaccurate. Crimean Tatars were allies and a part of the Ottoman army, so why not categorizing them as one of the bows of Turkish Ottoman Empire? I am shooting Turkish bows and bos of related cultures such as Korean and Mongol.
Archery is instinctive to humans. It has meant survival and war for thousand of generations...

Very interesting video, thank you very much Murat. A slightly off-topic question. I can see that when shooting you turn the wrist of your bow hand and move it outwards so the bow turns practically 90 degrees (about the same way as it is done in Japanese archery). Is it done on purpose as a part of traditional ottoman shooting technique? If yes, can you please make a video about it and how it is supposed to be done correctly? Thank you in advance :)

As far as I know Dr. Szöllösy Gabor tested Grozer's fiberglass and compared it with the one used by another Hungarian bowyers If it was published it is probably in Hungarian language. There are articles of Adam Karpowicz comparing the peformance of selfbows with the Asian composites. They are available on the internet. But there must be others whch I don't know.
I been watching alot of your vids lately and was wondering what bow you recommend most, my main goal is hunting. But i want to move away from my bulky mongolian bow, if any viewers have a recommendation please let me know as well, want it at least 45 pounds, 50 would be perfect. Nothing large or to tall
Laminated bows are fastest as a rule of thumb but Turkish bowyer Şimşek makes excellent all-resin bows with high energy efficiency. Go for a Grozer Turkish laminate (Hungarian bowyers), Keskin Tunçay or Şimşek Short Crimean Tatar (Turkish bowyers). All these models generate enogh energy at 45-55 lbs range hen drawn at 28 or further and when heavy arrows (10 gpp) are used.

Do you have any idea how the simsek hybrid plus performs at 80 pound draw weight? Or at higher draw weights? Does the extra limb mass slow it down to much in fps?
All bows slow down with extra limb-mass. Organic composite bows have the advantage of adding less mass per increaased draw weight. Şimşek bows are all-resin bows and perform excellent energy-wise at lower draw weights. I haven't tested any high-weight Şimşek but theoretically it would be less energy efficient then fr example a 40-pounder.

This is a great video Murat. One of the best in explaining it. I myself go between instinctive and split vision methods. The falcon grip method is intriguing as well. Also I wanted to ask what's the bow that you're using in this video.

I have a 47 1/2 inch Grozier biocomposite Turkish short bow which is supposed to be historically accurate and use a 30 inch arrow which I draw to 29 inches to my cheek. If I drew to my ear then the draw would be about 30 to 31 inches and the bow would break. I'm only 5 ft 8 inches tall and many would have longer draw lengths than me.
My question is if the historical military draw was to the ear how would the bow not break? The average arrow was 29 inches like mine with the arrowhead added on to that. It does not seem to add up.

In the collection of the Topkapı Palace Museum there are 500+ bows. Turkish bows' lengths vary from 89 cm (35'', flight bow) to 135 cm (53''). I am not talking about the Crimean Tatar bows that were even longer. So, it is just an assumption that the Turkish bow was short. However, most of the arrow shafts do not exceed 29''. It is a better and reliable indicator that the draw was short. However, as an archer with a body length of 185 cm (6 feet 0,8''), I draw only 29 to 29 1/2''. so, with a good back tension even taller archers drew shorter than thought, especially if it comes to heavier war bows. I once measured a shorthening of 2'' at my draw when I perfectly (so I thought at least) a 87 pound bow and shoot.
@@abdulkabza Thanks for the insight. Does the correct back tension possibly shorten the draw length required? When I shoot I always focus on the anchor point on my cheek and the arm holding the bow being straight. Do you focus on back tension instead or what do you suggest?
@@vfc1860 I consider the back tension as an important skill for opening mandal (handlock) fast and flawlessly. Having a good back tension makes the arm muscles loose and opening the hand occurs sharper.

How long your draw length and how long your arrow sir?

Armin Hirmer here talks about having the nocking point of the arrow slightly higher than 90 degrees, so that the arrow angles downwards.
I did not find such reference in either saracen archery or arab archery. Im wondering, is this historically the technique that was used? It certainly makes sense, which makes me wonder if im just missing it.
